Kona Swim Smack down 2018 Amburger vs Potts vs Charles
Quote | Reply
Kona is months away but we already got some great smack talk from the swimmers! Potts claims he could take Amberger and Lucy Charles bites back with a 400 free challenge!
Who do you have for the wins and what time, and who is going to live stream from Kona??

Nice to see! Sometimes triathlon, and sports in general becomming too correct.

Is there btw any IM races where male and female pros start together? I would love to see how well Charles and Brondon could hang on to e.g. Amberger.

AFAIK no IM branded races have same starts, but xtri events do and I’m guessing a lot more. Doubt we will see these guys and gals in one of those races though.
I do think that it would work well with male/female start in Kona.

Amberger was previously 2:06 for 200 free and 4:16 for 400, Lucy Charles split 2:08 on route to her 8:48 800 in the trials 2012 so I would say they are very even.
If we are lucky maybe he'll chime in ;)

Are those really Amberger's times? That's not that quick if they are.

Those are the ones he told Slowtwitch back in 2012, however it must be noted that it seems he was 13 when he swam those times.

That may be as fast as he has gone, I think he's just done OW and distance stuff since then.

I'm sure he could have gone sub-2 pretty handily.

I think it would be rather competitive. Sure Potts is older now, but he also doesn't show us his swim prowess anymore as part of his race strategy. Potts can most definitely still fly.

Agreed, but IIRC Josh outswum Potts everytime they raced a triathlon. Not just recently.

Potts began the slow and steady approach around 2013, was Josh still mulling around the ITU in those days? I really don't know, I don't know Josh's career timeline that well. Not to say that Josh isn't a phenomenal swimmer, but something tells me Potts races at maybe 75% of his capabilities.

Maybe Josh himself can chime in and let us know.

I think Potts swam a lot more in the pool, so I'd probably bet my money on him if we are talking a 400m free or something.
Open water triathlon swim? Tough call!

I don't think you can put a percentage on it, but he basically does as little as possible to come out with the lead group. He said he even did some backstroke during kona this year to see where the next group was behind them.

Either way it would be epic to see the swim off though I doubt Potts will agree. Maybe we could get a Burgs vs Charles matchup though which would still be amazing.

I think for this thing to be fair and more interesting is to have it in the race swim that happens the week before. In the pool it would be evident quite early who was going to win. In the OW even if someone is a couple/few seconds a 100 faster it could all be nullified by the draft of the race and the tactics. Also gives the nod to some experience over youth, which I believe Andy would need against both those men and women.

A drag race sprint after 45 minutes of sitting on would be much more exciting to me, well I guess it could be 50+ minutes if no one really takes the lead..

The whole point was Andy saying he could still beat him in the pool. He knows he can't beat Josh in open-water anymore. His background and his height might give him an edge in the pool though. He also mentioned that he re-introduced weight training and added a weekly swim session for this season, so the 2018 Potts may be swimming more like the 2012 version.

Well I guess it is Andy's challenge after all, so he should be the one setting the parameters. I just think that having that 4 second a 100 savings of being able to draft a faster guy is where his chances are. Maybe it will be a 400IM in the pool, that ought to even the age/youth difference up a bit..(-;

That is so cool Brad, reminds me of this old bar bet between pro triathletes that had quite a following. Were you around for any of these races?

Next up a mile on the track, now that would be some fun. A distance that no one is trained for or really good at, but you would just never know who would be the winner.

The mile would so much fun to watch but I doubt anyone would be up for that as a prelude to Kona even if it was a week out due to the chance of a crazy injury, just taking something out of you due to the heat/humidity or just being "hard" in general.

I fondly remember the Miranda free vs. backstroke of the other athlete(which I can't remember her name) on Youtube.

Can't say I remember that one. That article was posted a few days after I did my first sprint triathlon on a beach cruiser (I was 15). I do remember Carb-Boom though...still makes my stomach churn.

Ya in the olden days it was just me on my motorcycle riding up the mountain and then writing about it afterwards. But can't seem to find that original story I did on the Jurgen/Smith dual. And no one put up that money, it was the loser forks over a grand as I recall. Spencer's dad held the cash, and really everyone was expecting Jurgen to mop up the floor with him, think he thought so too. He didn't taper, rode 50 miles fairly hard out to the start and just seemed to comfortable. Spencer got a ride out with his dad, did a good warm up, and for the first time ever I saw Spencer spin the gears. Dude broke I don't know how many bikes because he would ride huge gears and muscle them from his hands down to smashing the pedals. Dan can probably at the very least tell you that he broke several QR bikes back in the day.

Spin to win!!!! $1k for doing a workout you would gladly do on your own for free, nice work if you can get it.

How about a crowdfunding source for some other prizes, maybe some more professional coverage too? It would be fun to have a bunch more too, have heats with a grand final, now we're talking.....

Did you see how much we raised here for a silly wind tunnel test? You get a couple names like that, hell even Lionel would get a lot of attention. It would not be about head to head racing, but it would give endless hours and threads on speculating, maybe even some friendly gambling!! Hell I will start it right now, I want Lionel, Keinle, and Wurth heat, then Frodo and Gomez thrown into the main heat..You would get more than dinner money with those match ups..

I am going to the pool and I am telling my wife that it's the only way I score a date with Lucy Charles. My wife knows I have no chance and now I get a pass to swim 100,000 km per year.

It'll be a 400-yard free at the Kona Aquatic Center the week before the race. Still working out the exact timing. Lauren Brandon will be the fourth athlete. There will be at least a couple grand for the winner...hoping to get up to $5K.

Gomez will have an open invite to join as the fifth athlete, but I'm not holding my breath.

If the Kona pool is really yards, then should be 500 yd; if meters, 400 m.

Please no. No one gives two shits about the 70.3 WC, I cannot even tell you where it is next year, or where it was last year. Ya I could look it up, but what I do know is that Kona is same bat channel, same bat time, and folks will be in the best shape their bodies allowed them to be in and tapered to the max. The stands at the Kona pool will be full for this, and if I'm not there I will be online live to watch it. You will have 10 times the audience than any other place or time..

And I'm all for expanding this thing to be an hour plus show. We need undercards like Lionel/Keinle/Wurf, maybe let the womens have their own heat. Bring in some top AG'ers and other related pros for undercards. Have a 100 fly, or 200IM challenge, make a whole meet out of it!!!

I remember way back when we used to have a CA lifeguard swim meet at Belmont shores. There were a few of the usual swims, but then there was the 10 man 50 relay. There was the 200 swim under obstacles free. How cool would it be to have a 4x100IM/Free country relay, or even a 4x200 free one? This thing could be really a lot more than a workout grudge match and a whole lot more interesting and fun to watch. How about an over 60 race? Me, Dave Scott, Tinley, Mark Allen all doing a 400 IM??? I'm in!!!!

The Kona pool is yards. I left the distance up to the athletes. They want to keep it short enough that it's not going to affect them on race day but long enough that Lucy and Lauren have a shot.

Now we have turn this into a beer-swim...4x100 off the blocks. Chug a beer, dive off blocks, sprint 100. Repeat 4x. Sh*tt*er than beer mile...I've done both.

This reminds me of the old NBC vs ABC sitcom/network stars competition. Such a great idea!!

Before that, John Flanagan was still racing pro and he sometimes worked together with Potts on the swim (Kona 2009, Coeur d'Alene 2010). But it's not really worth it for Potts to take off solo otherwise.

There was 2008 where Benjamin Sanson and Potts swum side by side in Kona to lead the swim.
