Fantastic idea! I think we should have a brainstorming session, gather data and then come up with a scatter plot so that we can correctly identify the paradigm shift that's obviously occurring.

After reading through these threads, I am so glad that I have never had a job that involved an office, a desk, or sitting in front of a computer.

You're a better man for not having experienced it, believe me. "Soul-sucking" is one way to describe what goes on. ;-)

Surely you jest. Today's offices have "ideation" sessions and leverage "imagency." Get with the times, old man!

Hahahahahaha! The only context in which I've personally ever heard the word "ideation" is when evaluating suicidal patients. "Suicidal ideation" was written all over their emergency treatment records.

As far as "imagency," wasn't that some sort of second sight or visionary power in the Harry Potter books? ;-)

I'm so glad I'm behind the times these days. LOL!

I really like the energy of this discussion, but we appear to be pulling on a lot of threads here. Let's make sure we can commercialize any strategy we develop, and at the end of the day we need to stick to our knitting and fish where the fish are going forward.

As much as I hate to admit it, yes. Yes I do. Occasionally I even contribute to the jargon.

However, I work remote about 75% of the time, so rarely wear more than shorts/jeans and a t-shirt. I have a ton of flexibility in where and how I get stuff done. So there are trade offs.

yes

What's worse I think is people needless chiming in during one of these just to hear themselves speak. Also bad, meetings or conference calls gives some an opportunity to make it all about themselves and add things nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Comically I sat in on a meeting with an industry expert who gave a great presentation. The nuckle head accompanying him decided he needed to get a word in or two. Got up and tried to draw some crap on the white board to reinforce what the presenter was discussing. It made zero sense and looked like a game of pictionary on the board. Finally realized he was making no sense (after 5 mins) , erased it all and apologized. Almost get bad for the guy.

I have, at various points in my career(s) and life, been a certified Total Quality Management facilitator, a certified Hoshin Planning facilitator, a Six Sigma practitioner, a lean manufacturing practitioner, gemba kaizen...you name it. I've found that people in those gatherings invariably have a crying need to add to the conversation, not only to hear themselves speak but to show everyone else that they're in on the game, that they're better and smarter than the others, and to impress their bosses and other superiors, even if they have no clue about what's being discussed or give zero f*cks about what's being discussed. It's just human nature. :-)

Good grief, TQM. You just unearthed some horrible memories of my time in the USAF about 25 years ago. All sorts of goofy designations and programs that some folks got stuck having to lead and try to sell to everyone else. Very few people paid attention to any of that crap. TQM died an unlamented and relatively quick death in the USAF, but what a waste of time for a couple of years.

It's true, the military is where I also gained my exposure to TQM (the Navy being the Navy, it was called "total quality leadership" but that was just a name change and nothing more). I got a healthy couple of weeks of temporary additional duty at the Navy Quality Institute in Bethesda, MD, all because my command got TQM fever and decided they needed someone to sit in on all the quality circles and quality workgroups and such that they were going to start up. ;-)

I used to volunteer at IM FL and the volunteer coordinator (friend and co-worker at the time) put me in charge of the men's change tent. There was a aussie who came in stripped down and was changing. He looked at the volunteers and said "Can any of you put some vaseline on my butt crack?" He started laughing and told us he was joking. I was disappointed as I had already pulled my latex gloves off in anticipation.

I always picture dilbert with his tie worn as a sweatband when I hear about those people. In my brief stint in the regular corporate world, I found "six sigma" meant more paperwork with less people.

Sadly, all of that shit has invaded the Army and medicine over the years. Glad I retire in 19 years...

I'm not certain that there's been much traction to actually solving the jargon problem here. Further, I've observed some Considers and Continues that leadership should share with individuals in ongoing PD discussions. Pulse your people leader to folllow-up.

Now, fundamentally, this meeting failed to be successful due to a lack of leadership. We must GRPI. Establish the meeting goal. Volunteer/assign the meeting stakeholders' roles. Discuss the process in which the meeting will take place. Discuss the interpersonal relationships so we can be in alignment and have trust with our peers.

Are you tracking with me on this? If you need more time, that's okay! Problem solve a little individually and then ping me on Jabber. Also, don't forget to post to your Yammer sub-groups when we've identified some of the Big Y's for this problem and our CTQs for resolution!!!

Last, beyond this challenge, we need to get some line of sight to what we engage next. How are the KPIs trending?
