2018 ITU Long-Distance Triathlon World Championship = where ?
I will be racing MiamiMan and just noticed that will be Qualifier again for 2018 ITU Long Distance.

Searching around....it's not very clear to me where it will be.

In teamusa.org is saying ITU Multisport World Championships Festival in Location: Odense/Fyn, Denmark

And in the ITU website, is saying Gold Coast, Australia.

So......where and when exactly will be ??

Can someone please tell me how I qualified for this?

I raced MiamiMan Half and placed 19th in my AG. Only 2 people ahead of me are aging up next year.

I just received the invite email.

Explain please.

From USAT website:

The top 16 in each aged-up age group, rolling down to the 25th spot, will qualify for the 2019 Long-Distance Triathlon World Championship (part of the ITU Multisport Festival in Pontevedra, Spain).

Confused. LC race last weekend qualified for Denmark in 2018.

LC race NEXT nov, meaning in 2018, will qualify for Worlds LC in Spain in 2019.

So if you raced last weekend, 2 I guess, you should have gotten a denmark invite, not a spain invite?

He was looking at the wrong year but its almost the same. Yes I was invited to Denmark.

Yep, it is basically a 3/4 Ironman as it was in Penticton

It's an awesome distance! Longer swim, so the race is much more balanced.

Hey, no problem. I'm going to go next year as Spain sounds good. I had no interest in Denmark, so was glad to see Spain as the next year's option.

Yea, I think they extended it, as the other poster said. This year they had a few races. It was pretty crazy that you could do the LD tri and also qualify for the Aquathon at the same time. They had 2 races saturday also. It's a pretty cool race and I loved going to South Beach for a side trip as I did this year. I know they have a sale on the race right now, so entry fee is only $199 until Saturday. I think it's every bit as good as a WTC 70.3 and better in some ways....

Gary, I've done Miami Man three times now. No, I don't think it's as good as a WTC 70.3, but it's been MUCH, MUCH better with the USAT National designation. E.g, they've had 14 years to get the bike course right, and I bet that only happened this year because of USAT. After 2019, without the "national" imprimatur, I would imagine that participation will shrink ... a lot! I have no interest in Pontevedra so I'm going to pass on next year's race. FYI - my sources tell that Miami 70.3 is dead. Unless, WTC finds an alternative venue within the same date range (ala the shift from Austin 70.3 to Waco 70.3), then next year's Miami Man may see a surge of locals who would have otherwise gone to the Miami 70.3. r/Paul

Thanks for the feedback. I think it's better than some I've done, and some around here (IMWI70.3, Muncie, Racine). The run course, while a fair amount unpaved, was one I like. Crazy flat so one has to keep the pedal to the metal, so it hurts. With the good entry fees it's about the same cost to me to do than Wisco, and a lot more fun. Now I'm afraid WTC will gobble it up and ruin it!

is participation really up because of Nats? M30-34 was half the size of last year. Just curious why USAT cares if the bike course is 54 or 56 since 70.3 isn't an ITU thing (as evidenced by the WC being some odd 3/4th distance)?

WTC is not going to gobble up Miami Man. Multi-Race is a pretty big outfit and they just announced another HIM at Jenson Beach in April within a couple of weeks of IM70.3 Florida. They aren't afraid of the boogie man.

I like the run, but it is not professionally managed and it wasn't always clear exactly where you were supposed to run. I.e., can you run tangents or must you stay to the left of the cones all the way. Do you follow to the left of the cone and the outside of the tree on the back side of the lake or take the inside path close to the lake? I watched several people cut across the grass to the parking lot where you go out of the park about mile 5 ... takes off maybe 30 yards. Altogether, because the course is not well marshaled on the turns, it's possible to take off maybe 100 yards per loop. It's not a lot, but I considered the run course officiating, or lack thereof, to be amateurish.

I didn't say it is up; I am predicting it will go down when it loses the USAT Nat'l stamp. I think the year to year participation during this three year run is predicated on where worlds are. Apparently a lot more people were interested in going to Penticton since that is like going to another state. Move Worlds to Denmark and holy cow, a foreign country that speaks Danish!! Yeah, I know that virtually everyone in Scandanavia speaks fairly fluent English, but hey, it's far away, in Europe!

Re, 54 miles. It's supposed to be a HIM and regardless of the ITU 'Nice' distance, it's never been a HIM at 54, and could not be compared to any other HIM at 54. So if it wasn't done at USAT's prodding, why, after all these years did they finally add a 2 mile loop to bring it up to snuff? Surely it wasn't done to confuse the first elite who missed it and was DQ'd?

Good points. I do like the option to have an affordable race and it seems they're doing that well. Funny you mentioned the run course when I got messed up on the bike course and lost a 2nd place finish. I guess I was afraid to cut the course in fear of the wild dogs in the woods! ;-)

You must have blinked to have missed a bike turn Gary. Even with the additional little loop near the end, I thought it was straightforward. Bet you won't miss it next year!!

I was close to the front of the bike race too (was 3rd OA in T2 for the aqua bike). I'm glad someone mentioned before the race that they added the extra loop at end. I did the half a couple of times in the past and was used to the old short course. Sure was lonely on that added stretch of road ;) ... for a while I thought I went off course which has happened to me before (I'm the 2016 HITS 80.3 champion).
