Is This a Refreshed or Redesigned Ford Explorer (Looks Like One to Me)?
My neighbor is one of those Ford Motor Company muckety mucks over at the auto plant that sits about 2 miles from where we live (it used to be a Ford/Mazda facility). He gets to take the upcoming -- and always disguised -- models and test mules out on the roads around here and he left this one in his driveway.

What do you guys think? If it's a new Explorer it looks bigger than the previous model to me. It's too small to be an Expedition, though.

About once a year I'll see cars wrapped up like driving in the Colorado mountains. I'm interested to see what engines turn up in the next gen Wrangler.

Definitely the Explorer. The non-Urban Ghetto Edition, I'd say. ;-)

Cars in disguises!! I don't know why I find this so funny. Maybe they should be wearing hats and sunglasses??

It makes sense, but it never occurred to me that they would do this.

My wife would agree with you, which is why she drives our Infiniti and leaves me with our Ford Edge or my company car (a Volvo V70 turbocharged station wagon). She won't go near an SUV. ;-)

Me, I'm disappointed. I had my heart set on one of those Elio 84-miles-per-gallon three-wheelers. But it looks like that ain't happening anytime soon. So maybe I'm up for a Chevy Bolt or a Tesla Model 3 (rhymes with "Model T" hahahaha!), when it finally comes out? Maybe... :-)

Whatever.

Depends on what you want to do with it I suppose. If you want to do the Nurburgring as fast as an M5 then, yes. They are indeed shit.

If you want to haul a boat, 3 kids and all their shit up to the cottage... then no, they are not shit.

If I want to haul a camper, 2-3 kids, wife and dog, plus supplies for a 2-5 day camping trip, what would be a better alternative?

Serious question, because I will probably* be trading in the old Civic for something, and one of the requirements of whatever we get next is that it can haul a trailer.

*probably - I've been saying that the Civic will get us through "one more winter" for 5 years now. It just won't die...

Minivans are good for hauling a boat?

The odyssey has a 280 hp engine. Maybe if it's a really big boat you might want 4WD for launching it but something like a pontoon? It would be fine.

My FIL launches his pontoon with a FWD Santa Fe. Works just fine. Shirley a minivan could do the same.

Your options are an SUV, a 4 door pick up or a minivan. Count crossovers in the SUV category.

I'd go for the 4 door pickup. My wife would not. She'd want an SUV/Crossover.

My favorite answer to hauling a boat is what a friend of my does. A crappy pick up. He has a 20 year old Ford that he keeps at a friends place and uses it only to tow his boat. This way he can drive a real car and enjoy it. Also like was stated before, a mini van will work.

It is not recommended that you tow a trailer with FWD:

"Having a tow vehicle that has rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive is important to have when choosing a tow vehicle. You want to have a vehicle that has the option for a rear-wheel drive so that when you are towing the engine’s power is directed to the axle that is bearing the most weight. With a front-wheel drive vehicle, you have more of a chance to lose control of the rear of the vehicle"

Drive at a safe speed and don't do stupid things. It works.

BTW, the tow limit for the Odessey is 3500lbs. The average pontoon weighs 2200 lbs. No issue.

can't carry the kids and dog in a crappy pickup (I had one). A "proper" SUV is built on a pickup chassis, but more interior room. more towing capacity than a minivan.

Minivan will pull a trailer up to a certain (not very large) size.

Looks like camper trailers weigh more than I thought. So, no a minivan would not work for most trailers (but it will work for most boats)

I would actually prefer a minivan. All depends on what style of camper we end up getting. a pop-up would be fine behind a minivan.

We have both an SUV and a 4 door pick up with camper shell. For what you describe we would take the pick up. Mostly because stuff gets dirty and smelly and can go in back of the truck. My SUV is a Hybrid though and has a lower tow rating than a traditional SUV. Either would work- but we would always choose the truck for that job. If we did not have a camper shell I guess we would choose the SUV.

Weight distribution and suspension. A well designed truck is made to carry and tow loads. That is why they suck to drive in. An SUV is designed to tow kinda sorta.

We aren't talking about towing a 5th wheel or a horse trailer, just a small / medium camp trailer. Kinda / sorta towing is sufficient.

Don't need a vehicle to be best in class at anything, just sufficient for the various things I will ask it to do. which will include hauling 2-3 kids plus dog and wife. Can't do that in a pickup. I can in an SUV.

This is exactly why SUVs make perfect sense. As a people-hauler, an SUV can do just about anything a minivan can do, plus, you keep to keep your penis if you buy an SUV, unlike what happens when you buy a minivan. As a toy-hauler, an SUV can do just about anything a truck can do. So, you are not giving up or compromising on anything when you buy an SUV.

The only argument I have ever seen regarding SUV vs truck for hauling is that an SUV body has a higher center of gravity than a truck on the same chassis, so the SUV is prone to more bounce and roll, but it is negligible in most cases.

Or I can compromise.

I'm curious why you think a truck cannot carry 2-3 kids plus wife and dog.

The new trucks (we just got an F150) have massive back seats. There really is not much functional difference between a truck back seat and an SUV backseat unless your wife or kids like to wear really tight short skirts which makes the truck harder to get in and out of. But running boards solve that problem.

It's great logic. I love driving. Like love to a creepy level. I don't play the radio or like it when people talk when I drive because it takes away from my experience. Dig? So a SUV offends my most delicate and highly refinde senisablities. I am fancy.

Now I don't give a shit about electronics in any form. Can't be fucked. If I feel have to get an electronic device I get the cheapest with less features and don't care about audio or visual quality. My phone and Chromebook would turn your stomach.

Whatever it takes to make you comfortable Nancy. My wife has instructions to put a small caliber bullet in the base of my brain if I ever buy a minivan. Same instructions if I ever wear a sweater vest non-ironically.

Drove a Land Cruiser for 13 years. Now I have a Tundra. I miss the interior space of the Cruiser especially on long vacation drives with two giant dogs, but I use the bed of the truck to haul furniture/dirt/stone/mulch/brush/etc. much more often than I needed the covered space and now hardly ever have to break out the trailer.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

I deserve that.

I have taken to backing into parking spots like everyone else in this terrible state. I do it to be an asshole. It takes the average Texan 45 minute to an hour to back into a parking spot. I can do it in under 30 seconds. I continue to do this waste of time to mock my fellow Texans. I am the only one who knows I do this and I am the only one who would care anyways. Yeah.
