The Official St. Anthony's Triathlon 2017 Race Thread

I didn't see one so I figured I'd make one. This is one of my favorite races every year!

Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow! Water temperature was 78.1 degrees last I checked. I swam the course backwards late this afternoon and could definitely feel some cooler water being churned up by the chop so I wouldn't be surprised if the RD dropped the thermometer a bit deeper to make the race wetsuit legal. Winds will be from the east south east about 15mph according to Wunderground so expect a slow, choppy swim.

I got here Friday evening and saw Eric Lagerstrom at the Northshore pool. Said hi. Super nice guy. He had his GoPro out so expect a video from him for this race ;) Should be interesting to see him and Cameron Dye duke it out. As a side note, I saw Cameron hanging out in the ISM booth and there was a Ventum nearby with his Wingspan helmet. Did he switch from Fuji?

I watched the Meek and Mighty triathlon this morning. If any of you STers have kids that might be interested in triathlon it's a really well produced super-sprint race with a pool swim. I'd say most of the kids were between 8 and 13 so if you're ever looking for a weekend family triathlon St. Anthony's is a must-do. I have to say, some of those kids are really fast! I clocked one kid who was probably only 11 or 12 swimming ~1:08/100m and he was having to swim around a lot of other kids and angle his flip turns into the next lane. Pretty good!

Some interesting things at the expo: I picked up a little device called a "Velo View" which I'll make a separate post about sometime next week. It's an interesting prism/mirror you can hook to your aerobars so that you can see the road ahead of you while your head is down. I'm going to experiment with it a bit in the next month. Also, I tried on the the new 935xt. I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere but one of the best features of that watch, IMO, is the new strap. It's not too thick and it's a bit rubbery/stretchy. It's very comfy and secure when on. Also, the reps hinted that they might have a software feature coming to the 935/Fenix 5 that would allow you to rotate the display so that those who where the watch on the inside of their wrist can easily look at their heart rate/pace/power/whatever.

Good luck everyone!

I absolutely love this race—the run through the neighborhood is a blast. Couldn't make it last year or this year, but I'm 100% going to be there next year. Have a good race!

Thanks for starting the thread as this race hit my radar screen recently. I feel sheepish saying that given the race's history. In my defense, I'm in the other corner of the country (Seattle) and we all know that long course gets all the glory these days.

So, sell me on packing up the family for a trip to St. Anthony's 2018.

Regarding 2017, I'll just say........go Lagerstrom! I'm looking forward to seeing him mix it up with Dye. Lags and Dye are good people who are great for our sport. We need more good old fashioned races like this (for them and us)!

Ps - yes, I believe Dye is on Ventum.

Ok, reasons to go:

Great race and great race venue: the water is always around 78f, weather is generally high 70s to low 80s, bike course is closed to traffic, run course is through a neighborhood that gives great community support (people cheering you on from every lawn, cowbells, misters, you name it). The race generally has a strong field and the field is pretty large... around 2,000 I think? It sells out most years. St. Pete has a sneaky strong restaurant scene and Tampa/St. Pete is pretty easy to fly in and drive around.

It has not sold out in many years, one of the reasons they added the Sprint triathlon. If they cancel or truncate the swim tomorrow it will continue to fade.

Really? I was told by a volunteer that they sold out this year.

BS. They were advertising on the radio just a few days ago. The race used to be 4000 plus strong when it was only an Olympic. It used to sell out the same day when registration opened on 1 Dec. Years of swim cancellations hurt the race badly. Even when they finally moved the swim start they still truncated or cancelled swims. It is a great race for pros but the age group race is a shell of its former glory. I hope the swim goes off for you guys because any reduction there will be another cut to the race's diminished reputation.

Race hasn't sold out since like 2011 or 2012. The race is really not what it used to be. I will say they put on a fantastic race. It's really well ran. But as far as the competition, at least for amateurs, it's not as big or deep as it used to be.

Ha!

Lauren Goff decimated the women's field by 3min!

Nice to see some names I haven't seen as frequently: Fleishman (what, is Kemper going to start showing up?! oh wait, Potts is from that generation...), Yoder, Wistoff, nice to see Jason West making his way up the pro ranks, and wow, Winslow at only 21!

I did the "oly" today. Windy morning and yes they shortened the swim to 900m. It was pretty rough out there and shallow at start and finish so a lot of running to get to where you could swim and same on the exit. Then a very long run back to transition as they took you back almost to the swim start instead of putting you on the steps right adjacent to transition. After I finished (around 10) the wind was really up and the water was unswimmable. As I was finishing the swim, there was one guy being brought back in in distress. Not sure if it was serious but it looked a little scary.

Nice cloud cover for much of the bike and some of the run. Got more and more windy. Bike was really windy and a bit dicey with gusts and my 808's. Lots of discs out there, but that wouldn't have been my wheel choice in these conditions.

Nice cooling wind on the run, though when you ran with it at your back things heated up pretty fast.

Watch out for Luis Ortiz. 5th overall at age 17. Kid can friggin swim. He swims at Lucky's Lake a lot and he drops former D1 swimmers who are still in decent shape in their 40s like a bad habit. Reasonably fast bike and run too and he needs a lot of help with his bike setup to boot. There's easily 3mins over 40k in low hanging fruit on his bike setup.

I went Flo 30 front and HED Jet+ disc rear on Conti TTs and I was very happy with that choice :) Saw plenty of people on deep wheels up on their base bar on the first quarter of the course struggling to control their bike. 20mph winds are one thing but those 25mph+ gusts between the buildings are another.

It was neat watching the Pros come out of the swim and run to T1. I didn't get to see any more since my wave was coming up. First time there and I loved it. Is that typical race conditions? The coffee barge lady said it wasn't normal but another guy standing there said it was pretty typical.

If typical means windy, hot, with choppy water conditions leading to a truncated or completely cancelled swim, then yeah, it was another typical day at St Anthony's. They just haven't had good luck despite finally moving the swim venue out of the chop tank. It's also one of the reasons the race is now half the size it used to be. In my opinion, they need at least 5 years in a row with a full swim to regain their reputation. Unless you are local, it has become a huge risk to travel to St Anthony's in the hopes of a full olympic distance race. Much of the drop of attendance is from out of state.

Agree. I've done it twice (from Colo) and first time, the swim was cancelled, and this time shortened. I probably don't need to come back. But it is a very well run race, so it's too bad they keep having trouble with the swim.

Exactly. Too much risk/investment to travel from Philadelphia....especially when swim is strongest part of my event. Venue, organization, history, is great but seems to have lost big part of luster now with combined sprint distance and continuing history of swim being shortened.

The air and water temperatures were typical, the chop was not. When the wind is out of the east it really screws that venue up because of the sea wall. IMO they need to make the swim an out and back from that beach and move transition to where the awards tent is now. That would have the added benefit of giving people more time to get into/out of their cycling shoes on smooth pavement.

A few years ago, I made the same recommendations to the RD...including the relocation of transition. You see how well that went. It seems obvious, but I guess they prefer to slowly whither away. We used to have a great sprint tri at Sand Key Beach in Clearwater in June. They had bad weather problems 3 years in a row and disappeared as a result. St Anthony's will survive due to its size and the pro race, but there is no doubt in my mind that this will hurt them. However, next year is the 35th so I will probably give it one more chance, but if there is another swim issue I'll never come back.

I'm curious, if chop during the swim is always the problem, why not start it in that canal—like where we run to get back into the neighborhood? I can't imagine the current to be that bad in there. I'm sure it would be a nightmare trying to get everyone in there, but the race is already a floating start...

Beats me. It might be pretty shallow, and the water quality might be pretty bad. I think the best recommendation is the one to make a rectangular out and back swim to avoid the chop tank, and come into transition where the awards are now held. However, I expect absolutely no change for next year.

They introduced a new RD at the Awards banquet. Maybe he will make some of the suggested changes. I don't remember his name but he said he was a Realtor and a Triathlete. Swimming is my strength too so the shortened swim kind of hurt me.

Ok, so I am green to this sport, and while my wife ran the oly I only ran the sprint. Swim oly was shortened to 900 meters, sprint was 750 meters. And I'm glad to know that you experienced riders got hammered by a few of those gusts between the buildings, when you hit that intersection the wind just mashed you sideways. Lots of people watching/helping in the water section, I loved the chop and came in under my goal, so I was happy. Transition to bike sucked. Over 1/4 mile barefoot on concrete to transition, saw lots of sneakers and shoes lined up at swim exit, so maybe I'm just dumb for not putting my shoes there? Bike ride was nice, overcast, and no road traffic was sweet. Run was fun, crowds were great, lots of aid stations. St Pete is neat, we watched Rowdies soccer game night before race, lots to do in the area (we live nearby in Lake Placid). Only other complaint, silly I guess, is they ran out of backpacks. Wife likes them, she collects, and we registered plenty early enough, to be told we should have gotten there "earlier" seemed weak.

Wow, thanks for the offer, but I knew when I posted it, it was kind of a petty post. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, to you or the event, just wife and a few others seemed let down to get plastic bags. I will just have to sign up for next year, and try to show up a little earlier! How did you do in the event by the way? I met a lot of friendly people, that is a huge plus on these tri events in that most everyone is very pleasant to chat with.

Ended up 4th in AG. Had 3 minutes on 3rd place out of swim and he beat me by 2 minutes OA. If the swim was not shortened I may have picked up a couple more minutes on him and grabbed 3rd. Missed 2nd by 5 minutes and 1st was too far ahead to do the math. My bike is the issue but hopefully this year I can bring it around.

Let me know if you change your mind about the bag. Otherwise, it's a great excuse to sign back up again.

I ran a 90/disc. It probably wasn't much worse than your 808s, then again I weigh 185ish. But as mentioned above, you need to be on your toes going through the intersections downtown. I only had one or two gusts that registered on the pucker factor other that than, not to bad... other than the wind slowing me down. In better shape, better position... around 2 minutes slower on the bike than in the near perfect conditions of last year. Stupid wind. >:I
