WORST beer you've ever had?
People like to say "the best beer is the one you're drinking" but I've had several that were downright undrinkable. I'm not looking for the regular hate on beers like Natty Light, Steel Reserve, OE, etc. I want to hear about beers you might have been excited to try but were unable to finish.

I'll start this off with Rogue's Voodoo Donut Bacon Maple. This smells like the worst well whiskey I've ever had, and tastes like a candied ashtray. Yuck. Actually, every beer I've tried from this series has been ... underwhelming.

Budweiser. I'm not above a macrobrew or lawnmower beer now and then, but budweiser is the worst tasting beer in the world. Period.

That Rogue one you mentioned isn't great. To be honest, most of the Rogue line up doesn't do anything for me. Portland has far better offerings.

Ever try their Dead Guy Ale ? It's tasty. That being said what you copied here looks like it would be terrible.

I might get some hate for this but I've never been able to finish a Heineken or Molson. Maybe the hype was just too much from when I couldn't afford them as a poor college kid. I just never got them.

I've never understood the appeal of Heineken. It's certainly not the worst beer I've ever had, but it's also certainly not something I seek out.

Well anything with crazy high hops is off my list. But of mainstream beers I find Corona to be wholly undrinkable.

I have never liked it and a blind taste test confirmed it. I tried 5 beers and they wanted my opinion of them. One was gawdawful; I later found out it was Corona. I wasn't shocked.

I got talked into a 12 back of their Big Eye IPA. Got relegated to the same roll. Couldn't give it away.

Yeah, I was being kind. It is very overly hopped down there. However, at almost every brewery I went to I could find at least one beer I liked. But most of it was very over done.

Yards (Philadelphia brewery) makes a Spruce Ale using an old Ben Franklin recipe, using spruce tips. It's actually pretty decent and even at 5% manages to knock me on my arse after a couple.

I have only had 2 that I couldn't finish, one was a sour, and while I'm not a huge fan of sour beers I have had a number that varied from palatable to pretty good, this one was like drinking fizzy apple cider vinegar. The other was a jalapeno ale, again not a fan of spicy beer but can finish most if I have decided to drink them but this on the jalapeno flavour wasn't mellow it was like eating a raw jalapeno.

I'll see if I can find the names in Untapped and post them later.

Jalapeno was from Scuttlebutt and was the Jalapeno Tripel 7. Can't find the Sour, something from Europe.

The few I've tried ["How bad could it be?"] ended up on the lawn, so I don't even bother anymore

  • One full can of regular [NOT diet] cola
  • One full can/bottle of beer
  • 1/2 Cup of Liquid dishwashing soap (do NOT use anti-bacterial dishwashing liquid) or baby shampoo
  • 1/2 Cup of household ammonia [lemon-scented is nice]
  • 1/2 Cup of mouthwash

Spray on lawn [I use an Ortho sprayer set at 4 oz/gal]

It's not as bad when you combine it with their grapefruit sculpin. Problem is i ran out of grapefruit and I have one habanero left in the fridge that I keep passing over in favor of other stuff.

So far I haven't had a good cherry chocolate stout. i keep giving them a try, but they continue to disappoint, even when I'm told "you'll like this one".

I like the regular and the grapefruit, not so much with the pineapple but will drink it. When I saw this one on the shelf at a beer store I figured it couldn't be too bad based on the others. How wrong I was.

Any IPA

Anything from my neighbors fridge: he tends to give out anything he doesn't like. (Pine Drop being one)

Anything overly expired

Natty Ice

I'm really not too picky, just never got the crazy flavor/IPA fad. Give me a good quality brewed beer and call it good.

Budweiser Clamato.

They used to serve this garbage at Dodger Stadium. By the 5th inning, sometimes it was the only beer left in the stadium. This was during the McCourt era. Maybe they no longer sell this.

Whoever came up with the idea of mixing budweiser with clamato "juice" should be incarcerated, or worse.

I've had some other pretty terrible beers, but none came close to this. I was desperate for a beer so I tried it. Big mistake.

I find Bass Ale to be surprisingly bad. There are plenty of pale ales I like. Fuller's London Pride is one of my favorite beers. Bass Ale is just not good. I can't for the life of me figure out why it is so popular. It must be the Bud Light of England.

Lots of horse piss beers out there, but the worse has to be Labatt's 50. Its the type of beer that Canadian teenagers puke their guts out the morning after the first time they've ever been drunk. Nobody else wants to buy it. Its absolutely horrible.

My worst was something called Swinkels (came in bottles shaped similar to Labatts 50) - I used to work at a package store while in college and the owner (not the brightest bulb) got duped by a salesman to take a bunch of cases off his hands. I tried one and it was foul, not sure how long it had been sitting in a warehouse somewhere in a addition to being a shitty beer to begin with, but I had to spit it out and then drink something else to get the taste out. Of course, he never sold any of it.

I can do pretty much any IPA, Pale Ale, Stout...etc if they stay true to style.

I cannot drink a saison, they all suck, and I don't know why.

Squatter's Pale Ale sucks.

Those kind of bottles were called "stubbies" and they used to be quite common in Canada. I'm sure you used to see them in the USA as well. Haven't seen them for years.

We started a beer exchange at work. There are 12 of us, so every 3 weeks we get 11 different beers. Unfortunately for me, most of the guys like IPA's, which I typically find disgusting, so I have a lot of "beers you should try" in my beer fridge.

Any double IPA is the worst beer.

Compared to the population size, we have a disproportionately high number of craft breweries in my town, so someone is always experimenting and creating something that's shit...something like 20ish craft breweries within a 20 mile radius of downtown Kalamazoo. There's always going to be something that sucks. Bells, one of the country's leading craft breweries, is a frequent stop. They had a Scotch ale on tap a few years ago. It was so boozy that it was difficult to drink, but one was palatable before moving to something lighter. The problem was that one was enough to kick my ass, so the rest of the night I was a mess. Recently they had a tequila habanero mead. The sample sip was good enough, but an entire glass of it was so god awful that I couldn't finish more than half.

As for your maple bacon -- I'm convinced that absolutely everything that's bacon flavored is terrible. Bacon itself is awesome and it makes things better, but "bacon flavor" is neither bacon or anything like adding bacon to a product naturally. A local coffee roaster does a maple bacon, which some people love. It makes me want to vomit. Eating bacon with breakfast and coffee is great; adding bacon flavor to coffee (or beer) is an abomination.

My dad drank Carling Black Label, an old school father's beer if there ever was one. I used to sneak them occasionally when in high school and tolerated the taste just because it was cool to be drinking beer at that age. Years later after I had moved out and gotten married, he'd always offer one whenever we went over to visit. I used to do the worst farts from that stuff.

When he passed away a few years ago, one of my brothers slipped one in the casket for him just before they closed it up for the last time.

We visiting Australia a few years ago, we were quite surprised how lowly regarded Foster's is. They have their own horse piss beers in Oz, but Foster's was regarded as the bottom of the heap. They also have a lot of good beers there, but what we term in our part of the world as "craft beers", the Aussies refer to as "boutique beers".

This phenomenon seems to be true all over the world. When I first moved to the US, I was surprised to see how poorly Budweiser and Rolling Rock were viewed here, as I was used to them being premium beers alongside stuff like Fosters back in the UK. Conversely, Heineken and Amstel (and even Harp!) were seen as premium beers in the US but pretty much ignored back home. Likewise Bass Ale, mentioned earlier in this thread.

Even now when I go home it's surprising to see Coors Light so popular over there (even my Dad, who is more of a bitter/stout drinker, will order Coors Light when he's here).

I can pretty much drink most any beers and like IPA's unlike quite a few on here. But, sour ones are not my thing (tastes spoiled/foul to me).

The worst has to be a Tonka Brewery (Minnetonka, MN as in the city where the lake that Prince mentions to purify oneself in those waters and also referred to in that Charlie Murphy basketball story). Forget the exact brew type but it was on sale with a 4 pack of pint cans for $5. Personally always like to try out something new (and it is a local beer to me)...but it was horrible. Over carbonated and I couldn't even finish 1 can. The taste while I never tried actual piss water but imagine that is what it'd might be like though. It took multiple efforts to even swallow one swig of the beer (it was that carbonated). Ended up pouring it all down the drain...even then it was so carbonated the suds took forever to settle down enough to go down the drain (think nasty foamy seawater that won't go away).

There are also good beers gone bad.
For years I thought Grolsch was a horrible beer. It just smelled and tasted bad to me. Then when I started homebrewing I read about lightstruck beer. Light gives beer the characteristic skunky taste and since Grolsch comes in green bottles is more susceptible to being lightstruck than beers that come in brown bottles. If you can find Grolsch that isn't light struck it really isn't a bad lager. For some reason green bottles have become associated with premium beers so vendors choose them even though they do not protect their contents as well as brown bottles.

Belikin wasn't that bad. Now El Presidente from Nicaragua, that was foul.

The beer in Cuba is surprisingly good, just like the rum and the cigars. I'm not just saying this to piss windywave off, but I really like the Cristal and rank it as good as anything I've had in the Caribbean or south of the Texas border.

I used to live close to a grolsch factory in holland. Did the tour many times and like the beer a lot. It's easy to find on tap in holland and way better than Heineken, which can be skunky.

As a brewer, i so appreciate what Dogfish does...pushing limits of ingredients, techniques, etc. But I agree it's so overrated, and they seem better at marketing than brewing. And overpriced as a result...$14 for a 22oz of most of their offerings is crazy.

Any Shandy/Radler

The few I've tried ["How bad could it be?"] ended up on the lawn, so I don't even bother anymore

  • One full can of regular [NOT diet] cola
  • One full can/bottle of beer
  • 1/2 Cup of Liquid dishwashing soap (do NOT use anti-bacterial dishwashing liquid) or baby shampoo
  • 1/2 Cup of household ammonia [lemon-scented is nice]
  • 1/2 Cup of mouthwash

Spray on lawn [I use an Ortho sprayer set at 4 oz/gal]

I agree on the shandy. They are all terrible. So artificial and sweet tasting. I think shandys are gateways beers for high school girls who normally drink wine coolers.

I like the Flying Dog Heat series like last year's Jalapeno White Ale; Dead Rise is a Wheat Ale with Old Bay Seasoning, and excellent for Summer

YMMV

We visiting Australia a few years ago, we were quite surprised how lowly regarded Foster's is. They have their own horse piss beers in Oz, but Foster's was regarded as the bottom of the heap. The last time this shit was sold in Oz was back in the 80's when Crocodile Dundee was big in the US. I've never actually seen this beer sold here in Oz that we refer to as "cat's piss". Maybe in the US the correct term is "horse piss". So I'm apologising on behalf of all Ozzies for unleashing this shit on the rest of the world, we like to keep the best beer down under here for ourselves.

And just to add, the worst beer usually comes from the Netherlands.

I agree after trying one of the same once. Also tried a beer aged in a wooden whiskey barrel. Was an interesting concept but just didn't work.

Interesting timing on this. Many years ago I tried Victoria Bitter, while stationed on Okinawa of all places, and liked it. Never have been able to find it since. I do see Foster's occasionally. We have a local Australian eatery (The Australian Bite) that sells Foster's in a green can. I asked the Australian lady who owns the place if she knows where I can find VB, and she pointed to the green can Foster's and said, "that's it". Any truth to this? Is VB disguised in a green Foster's can?

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ale (New Belgium Brewing, collaboration with Ben & Jerry/s) - simply godawful. Someone brought it to a party we had a while back and the only reason that there's 5 of them still in the garage instead of 6 is that I foolishly tried one. So sickly, syrupy sweet that it was all I could do to choke down one taste - the rest got dumped. Fortunately, they only brewed it once (according to Beer Advocate: https://www.beeradvocate.com/.../profile/192/236603/ - if you want to taste the horror for yourself, I've got 5 of 'em up for grabs.

Foster's was quite big in Canada back in the Crocodile Dundee days. When I visited Australia I learned quickly how poorly it is regarded on home turf. Drank VB quite a bit in Oz, plus other good beers, not to mention some really good wine.

Agreed, I never got into any of the Japanese beers. I'll forget and order a Sapporo at a Japanese restaurant every once in a while and quickly remember it tastes like garbage.

Haha, I forgot about this one. It was in a New Belgium sampler pack I bought, and was another beer I couldn't finish a single bottle of. I even warned friends not to bother trying it when they saw it in the fridge, although someone must have because they're not there any more and I don't remember throwing them away.

In college me and a buddy decided we'd try every cheap beer.
We started with a 12 pack of Texas Pride Extra Light.
We threw away the remaining 10 beers and gave up on our quest.
