Your favourite 70.3 in the Northeast?
I did my first ever tri (Havana 70.3) a couple of weeks ago and got hooked, so looking to sign up for another one for later this year.

Which is your favourite 70.3 in the Northeast (preferably within driving distance from NYC)?

What time of year are you looking for?

If you are looking for a challenging course:
Rev3 Quassy is a great one in June
Rev3 Pocono is in August

If you want something flatter:
IM 70.3 Atlantic City is in September

I like Patriot in MA, but it's sold out. Timberman was also great, but no longer exists. I've heard good things about Syracuse (hilly and usually on the warmer side) and I'm doing Eagleman in June - not sure if you want hot and humid! Quassy is also a great race - also quite hilly.

I don't live in the northeast anymore, but I did the Musselman in Geneva, NY last summer and thought it was very well run. Despite the freezing temps last year I had a great time. Not quite freezing, but it was like 50's and rainy most of the morning last year. Coming from TX in July where most of my rides were in triple digit temps that was a bit of a shock to the system and certainly felt like it was freezing!!! I would recommend it to anyone though. It would be about a 5 hour drive from NYC. The state park where transition and the finish area are have playgrounds and a splash park for kids so if you have family there's some stuff to keep the kiddos busy.

I'm thinking June or later - both Pocono and Quassy look great but feel that the hills would kill me...

I did the Big George race (in Lake george ny) few years ago, favorite swim and bike courses I've done of almost any distance. They changed the run since I did it so cant actually comment on that part...but lake george is crystal clear, beautiful water, and the bike has 1 gradual longish climb to start then flattens out for 50 miles then you plunge back into town at the end down that same hill. Great scenery along rivers and lakes and forests in adirondacks. Lake George great overall destination too, lots to do there. They also do an Olympic on saturday. Well run race in my experience.

Never done them, but there's also the toughman half in Harriman state park, very close to nyc, and Montauk mighty man as well. Never done the race but been to Montauk many times with family, great place to visit. Bike course goes out and back to the lighthouse twice I think, I would imagine it to be a great scenic, and fast, course.

Another vote for Musselman. It was a beautiful course and very well supported. I worked it into my vacation a couple years ago, and would absolutely do it again if I am in the area. Just a note of caution, the time cutoffs are shorter than they are for a branded course, although still completely doable.

It is also nice because it is in wine country (and a few breweries are starting to pop up there) so your significant other might enjoy it.

I did the same thing last year. Made a 2 week family vacation to see the wife's family into something all about me!!! :)

I remember the RD mentioning something about the time cutoffs at the race meeting last year, but also saying that they didn't force anyone off the course so every participant finished (maybe except anyone that DQ'd themeselves?).

Cool, thanks! I've done a few running races up in that area and love it. Will definitely check it out!

I did the Jerseyman Tri last year and enjoyed it. It's end of May. It's not a full 70.3, they call it a "half-light."

There's also the NYC Tri - also not a 70.3, but a fun race.

Syracuse 70.3 and the Harryman Half

I did Patriot as my first Half last year and really enjoyed it. Also did Pumpkinman and was having a great day until the run was cancelled due to storms. Swim and bike were great, and the volunteers were fantastic. Only negative I had with Pumpkinman was the very crowded transition racks.

Doing Musselman as my A race this summer, looking forward to it.

Toughman NY - in Harriman St. Park in early September.
Not a place to PR with all the hills, but a great event.

Cheers,
Sam

Not exactly a 70.3, but similar time/distance and easy drive from NYC: SOS Triathlon (http://sostriathlon.com/). This is basically the coolest event that exists. Hard to get into though, you'd have to buy a charity slot for this year.

This looks awesome - basically a swimrun with a bike leg for warm-up ;) Definitely putting this one the list for next year. Thanks!

Have you checked out Toughman NY?
It's hilly and challenging - did it last year when venue moved from Croton on Hudson over to Harriman Park.
IMO, much easier to get to for race day logistics. Harriman park is huge - parking is right next to transition.
You get to swim in Lake welch, where swimming is normally never allowed.

I'll definitely be back this September for the race! I hope to see many ST'ers there too!!!

Timberman AND Mooseman are both gone? That's disappointing.

One more vote for Toughman NY. I didn't get to race it due to injury, but really liked the venue and the area. Very pretty, and a pretty short drive to NYC if you want to do some fun things while you're in the area.

There is now a Lake Placid 70.3 in September. Most races in the Northeast are hilly, except for Eagleman and Atlantic City

Used to be Mooseman. Ironman bought it and killed it.
Then it was Timberman. Ironman bought it and killed it.
Now I guess Patriot. I hope they don't sell it it Ironman.

I too, find it hard to imagine, that there is a better 70.3 race/venue anywhere in the region. And the support from the locals is top notch.

How cold is the water for this race? I imagine very cold, but no one complains about it.
