Use an aero press or moka pot to brew it. That creates a big difference in taste from a drip coffee maker, much smoother and less acidic. If you want a pre-ground bean, I'm fond of cafe bustelo.

how do you grind yours for the moka pot? I know the grind is finer than espresso but not as fine as turkish or something like that. I use my moka pot with preground Illy and its really good but looking to try some other beans but I'm probably going to get my own grinder.

La Colombe and check out your local roasters. In the PGH Pa area I recommend 19 Coffee, Coffee Tree Roadters, Commonplace Coffee and La Prima.

I used a basic grinder and just ran it a long time. Used to get one of the Trader Joe's coffees. Now I use cafe bustelo because I like it and it's convenient.

Before you get too fancy just try a good old fashion cup o' Joe. People might call me a Philistine but persoanally I prefer drip coffee. French press is ok but I don't like the way it is silty at the end.

Try 100% Columbian, medium roast, hot, strong, and black.

Fresh ground is best and if your tap water doesn't taste good filter it first or use bottled water. I llike Bunn Pour-o-matic coffee makers best; they brew better and more consistant than cheap coffee makers.

Speaking of grind. I noticed that every good Mexican restaurant I went to had great coffee. I asked one retaurant what their secret was and they told me it was that they didn't grind the beans as much. They more coffee but grind it coarsely. I tried that at home and my coffee does come out better this way.

Also, you are correct about Starbucks. Starbucks is not good coffee. While I admire a lot about the company their coffee just isn't very good.

To me the ultimate epxreession of coffee is espresso. Problem is that it is darn near imposible to get good espresso in the US. Your best bet is to order a shot at a really nice Italian resaurant.

Aldi's brand.

No joke, 1/3 the price of what other people are listing and tastes just as good.

I use a french press and whole bean coffee from Costco. Costs about $5 a pound. I use their grinders and ground about half the bag at a time (we shop Costco like every other week)
When traveling I look for Peets and Caribou - never found a Starbuck's I liked.
2nd to the Black Rifle - but $5 a pound is plenty good enough.

BTW, I sweeten with honey or agave, or raw sugar as a last result . . . pure sugar kills coffee for me (so go black).

BRCC is good, but their shipping rates are a little steep in my opinion; just have to factor that in to the cost if that matters to you.

Also, not sure where you are located, but you probably have some good local roasters. I'm in Atlanta, and have a plethora of great coffee shops locally that roast their own and it's hard to beat (no shipping, see above).

ETA: this was really intended for the OP, quote just obviously made the reply to you, JSA

Coffee is one of those things where your tastes can grow quickly. At first you might not really identify a difference between premium products and pretty basic stuff. As your taste buds get used to it, you'll notice a difference if you try good stuff.

Things to keep in mind:
  • Coffee is complicated. Like wine, the beans vary greatly in flavor based on how they're grown at the farm level, the terrain they're grown in, how they're harvested and processed. Then there's the roast. And then the freshness. Then the grind consistency and courseness for the preparation method (and when that's done, because coffee starts to oxidize after it's ground and lose flavor). Then there's finally how it's prepared, which has its own set of variables.
  • Most American commodity coffees are overroasted. To cover up inferior beans and keep the many variables consistent, coffee is often overroasted (i.e. dark, strong, bitter, oily) because that's the one way to get consistent flavoring. Higher end coffees focus on the specific region and farm or processor that they're grown in, allowing them to be roasted in a manner that optimizes the flavor of that specific bean, with many of the best roasts being light. Starbucks, etc. may say that their roast is light, but it's usually medium+...their definition of light.
  • The processing method makes a big difference. Brew one bean at the proper ratio on Chemex, for example, and you may have a really bright flavor profile without heavy body; brew the same bean at the same water/coffee ratio using a V60 and it'll be a different profile, maybe a little more of the oil flavors coming through and a more full body. Even more, there are different techniques to brew with the different brew methods, so I wouldn't be afraid to try different coffees at different places when you get the chance. Check out some hipster shops in your area or travels and try coffee made with a Chemex or Kalita Wave.

I've really gotten into coffee over the last couple of years and have settled pretty hard into locally roasted beans, with specific regions in Africa being my favorite origin. I started with "better than Starbucks" stuff from another local roaster. It was definitely a step up, but has enough going wrong technically to be noticeable once I tried even better stuff, perfectly fine for most people though. Some of the guys here apparently like really expensive watches; I realized that I like good coffee. You might find something in that mid point that's everything you want, just try a few things that sound intriguing until you find it. Except Kopi Luwak. Don't touch that shit.

My friend's husband is the co-founder of a company that does a monthly subscription box for coffee.

You can set preferences for the coffee types you get. I prefer light and medium roasts.

I'll 2nd that about Costco Coffee. I buy Kirkland Colombian Supremo. The one in the silver bag with a leopard on it. It is one of the best coffees I can find. Sometimes I'll spring for some light roast Kona for a change but most of the time Kirkland is my choice. I grind it at home but coarser than most people grind it for drip.

They say coffee is an acquired taste but I can't remember ever not liking it. I started drinking coffee when I was 12 and always took it hot, strong and black. Sometimes I'll put some milk in really bad coffee to make it drinkable but good coffee doesn't need anything.

I also whip up a drink with 1/2 coffee, 1/4 vanilla ice cream, 1/4 Bailey's Irish Cream. By this point it is more a desert than coffee though.
