Is it a sin to re-badge?
So we all know pros will sometime re-badge wheels, bikes, shoes etc. for sponsorship reasons, but how about us AGers? What if you have a different front and rear race wheel, is it a sin to rebadge them as being the same company? I saw a guy selling a Zipp disc that he had re-badged as Reynolds to match his front wheel.

I am not talking about putting Cervelo stickers on a Huffy, let's assume the quality of the 2 products is the same, what does the ST population think?

I don't see the point - other than for cosmetic reasons - and even then - I don't get it.

Anyone want a set of Zipp stickers - no intention of putting them on my Renn - and they're collecting dust.

It's fine.

It's better to rebadge than to have clashing logos.

If it comes down to it, you really should just get your own custom decals, but for the time being rebadging is fine.

The rules are simple, as long as you are re-badging a superior product with an inferior brand, it's OK. For example, putting Cervelo stickers on a Huffy would be bad. Putting Huffy stickers on a Cervelo would be cool.

Why re-badge. It's way cooler to de-badge.

I disagree. I think that putting Cervelo stickers on a Huffy goes so far in the other direction that it is actually funny. Simple example. Take an old Cevy Astrovan. Put some R-Type ricer racing stickers on it. Then its funny.

Now, putting R-type stickers on a Honda that doesn'thave R-type is lame. Kinda like putting Cervelo stickers on a stripped Trek. Now, put those same Cervelo stickers on a BMX, and its funny.

Now that I know some of you guys look through the special needs bags for kicks, I'm gonna put some really weird stuff in mine. I can see it now. I think it is OK, as long as you are not trying to selling something other than what it really is. For example, it is not right to put zipp stickers on some other disc and to sell it as a zipp disc to some newbie.

My frame is a Specialized that I've badged as "Swingline"

My wheels are Mavic, with "Calvin Klein" stickers.

My saddle is a flight, but to all outward appearances, it was made by "Nabisco"

Oh, and my aero bars, naturally, profess to be "Time-Warner"

I'm way cooler than you.

It is if you're re-badging for the purpose of misrepresenting a product you're trying to sell.

There was a guy on Ebay buying up old Zipp 404s and disks, rebadging them with the 2004 stickers, and reselling them on Ebay. Unless you read the description very closely, it would be easy to assume the wheels were newer than they were.

I almost bought a disk from him 'til I went and looked at his feedback and noticed he was buying old ones and mysteriously had a newer model for sale a short time later. I'm not sure if he's still doing it, he's probably still out there.

Why not just de-badge and go for the stealth look? Seems better than putting a different sticker on to me.

Re-badging is wrong for an entirely different reason. It focuses too much on how a person looks than how they perform. If it was simply a matter of aesthetics, then decorate the bike/wheels with some cool custom design - not some manufacturer's logo. Too much emphasize on style over substance. (Exception made for professionals with sponsor issues.)

Thanks, but I was talking aesthetics here. That's why I included the part about assuming equal value. Not doing it to look like I spent a lot of money or worrying about sponsors logos, just want my ride to look cool.

Well, it isn't the athletes who are the most rampant re-badgers:

Check this out:

The KHS Flite Team is also magically the:

But the Blue is about 8% more expensive at the same dealer margin. Hmmmmmm. It pays to shop carefully.

My feeling on the matter has always been clear:

Badges? I ain't got no badges. I don't need no stinking badges.

>>>Badges? I ain't got no badges. I don't need no stinking badges.<<<

I always smile every time I hear the sound track of Gold Hat's "badges" quote from the Treasure of the Sierra Madre movie. Some Mexicans are offended by this quote but to me it is the classic response of a bandido.

On the topic, I think that there is no excuse for re-badging.

Back when I was a JR mountain bike racer, there was another younger kid racing an old beat up Raleigh that he had repainted. I think he did it himself.

Anyway, it copied the paint scheme of the very expensive Fisher Pro-Caliber.

We all made fun of him for his Raleigh Pro Caliber but he got to be faster than us over the years so I guess he had the last laugh...

SwBkRn44,

You have raised another interesting question.

I think someone would have a hard time arguing that it is.

Consider this example. Huffy was the bike sponsor of the 7 Eleven Team. Serotta made their bikes and rebadged them as Huffys.

Bike "maunfacturer" AA buys frames from Taiwan or China and builds them up as complete bikes and sells them as AA bikes. Are these rebadged bikes? Or are they AA bikes?

If AA doesn't "make" the frame, is it really AA's bike?

This happens much more often than the bike consumer realizes. He never even thinks about it.

This is especially true of carbon bikes. Way more than half of them are manufactured off shore by third parties.

And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire...

I agree with debadging....anything that will peel off comes off. I used to have one of the older Felts, though, with the matte black finish and diecut vinyl graphics. When the lettering started to peel (didn't take long) I took it all off for a stealth look. But for a while I put Harley Davidson decals on the down tube...now that got some attention and questions.
