1. He could only see her at their home, so there was definitely a monitor and control aspect. That didn't mean she didn't see him otherwise, but I guess the parents felt they had some control over it.
2. I think the girl and her boyfriend lied about his age. I think my best friend, who was enamored with the gangsta lifestyle, enabled it.
3. The area we lived was sort of a shitty area, so they weighed the risk. Her subsequent boyfriends, though younger were pretty scummy to.

Of course, you could also claim that the girl you got really drunk consented right before she blacked out, but the law doesn't really see it like that. We define consent fairly narrowly for just this reason. We've decided that certain relationships (boss/employee, adult/child, sober person/drunk) present difficulties with regard to consent.

If the issue is consent, why does that only apply to sex between an adult and a minor, rather than between two minors? Most people think minors having sex with each other is perfectly fine and healthy. Why can they consent to a sex with another minor but not to an adult?

Or why can't the parents give consent for their minor child to have sex, as they seem to have done in this case? Parents can give consent for a wide range of things on behalf of their children. Is there something particularly harmful about sex?

Some people think that, but most still recognize that a power imbalance can exist that makes consent problematic for the weaker member of that relationship, and recognize that younger kids are less equipped to make sound decisions in this regard.


There's something particularly personal about sex, and there is something particularly impactful to many people psychologically about sex. But sure, some of it is moral views of the society in question.

I think you'll find the list of things on which people consistently agree is pretty small. That said, I think most people agree that it's not ok for kids to have sex, and certainly not ok for adults to have sex with kids. The question is where the appropriate age lines should be drawn.

Kind of like general agreement that murder is wrong, but disagreement on where the line for self defense should be, or general agreement that lying is wrong, but disagreement on where the "little white lie" line is drawn, etc.

And of course strangely enough, in many states I believe parents can consent to have their minor marry someone, which if you think about is far more of life defining than sex.
