Burkini ban on French Riviera

French municipal authorities in a couple places have put a ban on wearing a 'burkini' (full body covering, tight-ish, not flowing) on the beach, citing security measures and secularist principals (if think wearing a face veil is illegal in france.)

So really, a government can prescribe how much skin a person must show on the beach? Do. Not. Like.

BTW also hate religious principles that dictate how much should be covered.

I really don't see the point in this other than pandering to some nasty elements in French politics. What's wrong with covering yourself up at the beach. Maybe they should issue some state approved clothing for use at the beach? Is Kosher swimwear ok?

Exactly. I was very surprised to see Valls agreeing to this. The cities that have asked that are very pro front national, and this is done because 'these women are oppressed'...which is incredibly ironic given the number of women trying to get into 'beach body shape' for the summer.

This is done supposedly to preserve laicity...but I bet that wearing a little cross around your neck will not get you off the beach. I wonder if wetsuits are ok.

With all fairness to France, Air France has required all their flight crews going to Iran to cover themselves accordingly (if they work this route).

Where do you get that? I'm not interested in commenting laws or current politics in france. It isn't my place, like it isn't some foreigners place to comment on US gun laws. I like looking at scantily clad women as much as any heterosexual male, but I can do that here, or watch Olympic volleyball.

France has a major Muslim integration problem. So does Germany. So does Sweden. When liberal democracies throw open their doors with the best of intentions to a culture that has no intention to integrate this is what you are going to get. You can be as nice about it as you want and downplay it as Euro governments are doing, but a shit storm in Europe is forthcoming in the future with a clash of cultures. Just a matter of time. I'm not a Trump fan but when he said France and Germany have nobody to blame for themselves for allowing them in, then I agree with the guy.

The latest thing I read today was that some extreme left wing politician in France stated that banning burkinis will only increase ISIS recruitment in France so they must be accommodated. Its strictly a case of the French becoming fed up. Their country has been under a constant terror watch and has had a few serious incidents. Its only a symbolic issue, but people are finally saying enough is enough. Banning burkinis is a way of saying "we are still French" and this is not part of being French. I sympathize with the French people because their idiot politicians have created a situation with immigration/integration that will only get worse.

When I am at the beach here in the USA I see a lot of men covering up. They have long pants (I guess they call it shorts for some reason) and often t-shirts.
Even at the pool you have these men.
What religion are they part of. Church of fast food???

France is not banning the burkini. 15 towns are. And they all have right wing mayors (except for one).
What was more surprising was to hear Prime Minister Manuel Valls saying that it was not 'unconstitutional' for the mayors to ban it.

I really like the burkini.... It has good sun protection and you don't have to worry about slathering on lots of sunscreen. I would really consider getting one.... I wonder if that would be weird (I am not Muslim). My daughter is very blonde and burns so easily (especially her scalp)- I don't think I could get her to wear it though.

My mom has really bad scars on her legs from an accident when she was a kid- so she won't ever go to the beach or wear a bathing suit....I think it would be good for her too.

It would be fantastic if these became trendy (sorry guys).

Thank goodness I live in a place where we can choose what we want to wear.

I was driving before and listened to an interview with the Australian woman who invented it and she said that most of her early customers were women's with fair skin seeking protection from the sun. It actually took some time until the idea caught up with Muslim women.
