Once you went _______ you never went back.

What is the one (or two) thing(s) that you find indispensable to training or racing? Nutrition, gadget, electronic, etc...

I'd have to say a power meter for me. I've been training and racing with one for 5+ years now and it's completely changed the way I ride (for the better). I know some people like to just go off RPE, but I don't think I'll ever go back to biking without a power meter.

Really? I used to be Campag through and through, MANY years ago! In fact I gave away a full Campag groupset before I moved to NZ. Had good condition Delta brakes (they looked soooooo good. So so good. So good that in fact I'd forgive them being heavy, difficult to work on, and way overly complicated if it wasn't for one minor complication - when I applied pressure at the lever the bike in no way decreased in forward motion!).Also had the beautiful C-record chainset of the same era, along with a Croce' Daune rear mech and indexed levers, and then the super record from the late 80's (with the black parallelogram), along with the nuovo record chainset and super record brakes. Those indexed levers were cool - you could change the insert depending on what freewheel you were running (6, 7, or even 8 speed, and even what model!) How I wish I'd hung to them all now!!! Anyway, I moved to Shimano when they brought out Sti in about 95, and have never gone back.

Training with power
In hindsight I would take a round tubed bike with box section wheels and a power meter, over a modern deep section speed machine without a PM.

OTE nutrition products
Nothing super special or different about their powders/bars etc, they just agree with my gut exceptionally well. I've certainly found "my brand".

I'll be starting to use a coach in the next few months, I hope to look back and be able to add that to this list.

Low or midrange Shimano everything. Well not quite, I've ventured away many times but always returned. Indispensable to training because It works flawlessly and forever and is designed well which isn't something I say often about any consumer product. Every time I've replaced with something more flashy it's broken/cost far more or generally eats up time in assembly/ disassembly through poor design.

When sticking a good amount of time on the bike training knowing it will just work all the time is huge to me.

My PowerTap will probably fit the bill for me, but only having one for a short time I can't really say I have "never gone back." For me the biggest thing that has stood the test of time is a GPS watch. I starting wearing one in 2011, and probably have done less than 5 runs without GPS tracking since the that day. I can say without a doubt that wearing a watch while running makes me faster, it's the whip I need to make me push myself. Without a watch I get lost in pace and distance and tend to lose focus and motivation.

I did that with Aviator knockoffs a few years back. I seemed to lose one nice, expensive pair of aviators a year. A couple years ago I bought three pairs of knockoffs for $15 total and haven't lost a single pair yet :p

The "aviators" aren't. The real aviator sunglasses worn by pilots cost $40 and are made by AO (American Optical). What people think of as aviators (expensive Oakley's etc..) THEY are the knockoffs. True story.

I use the $50 Tifosi for running and cycling. I've always suspected that $150 or $200 glasses aren't any better.

The HeatGear sleeveless: https://www.underarmour.com/...shirt/pid1257469-410

Buy it on the tight side, it's not restrictive. It's super thin and doesn't give me the wet shirt sticking to abs stomach feeling. The only thing I would like is a lower neckline (it's crew neck). For Wildflower I actually used the long sleeve women's version since it has a v-neck. Great sun protection (UPF50) so no "angel wings" and cool&aero on the bike. The sleeves were a bit hot for the run though.

Campy parts here too. Accidentally bought a campy bike about 10 years ago, now on my 5th or 6th bike with it. The stuff just works day in and out with years of no adjustments. The chain/casette wear interval is 5-6 k miles.

Cheap (<$30) sunglasses. After losing my 2nd one that was moderately pricey, and replacing it with $4 DeWalt sunglasses and noticing that the DeWalt's were just as comfortable and no more fear of scratching/breaking/loosing them, I'm sticking with them.

I was just about to say this as well. My AOs are great and at least half the price of the Ray Bans

What is the one (or two) thing(s) that you find indispensable to training or racing? Nutrition, gadget, electronic, etc...

I'd have to say a power meter for me. I've been training and racing with one for 5+ years now and it's completely changed the way I ride (for the better). I know some people like to just go off RPE, but I don't think I'll ever go back to biking without a power meter.

not just any power meter, but SRM for me.

Got my first Powertap in fall of 2010, switched to a Quarq in fall of 2011, then switched to a SRM in fall of 2012, added a second SRM in fall of 2013

In your experience - what would you say are the main pros/cons of SRM over Quarq and PowerTap?

  • Yoga(meaning I tried it and now I go 3-4 times a week)
  • Fizik Arione(tried a dozen saddles and now I don't plan to ever change brand/models - on my 3rd or 4th)
  • Bib shorts(no waist constriction with great comfort and that makes it perfect for riding)
  • Nipple tape(very rare is a run I don't tape)

Swim - Bike - Run the rest is just clothing changes.
