They mention "this letter" twice. What / Where / When / How do we get "this letter"?

Already got a call from my LBS this morning. I think they were surprised when I answered the call with, yeah let me guess, Shiv recall? They laughed.

As I see it new cables needs to be installed when doing the switch to the low stack solution.

Is that correct?

(I might the the opportunity to switch to a new RD and shifters)

I looked at the low stack kit last year and ended up going with a negative stem instead. It does require recabling (since the cables run through the inside of the existing extensions. It's also heavier and much less adjustable....but less likely to crash you.

Anyone know how the fix using the low stack clamps will accommodate pad setback (other than the limited hole options on the pads themselves)?

It may not accommodate every riders pad position. When mine was taken care of at IMNZ they had to replace the base bar with a Profile bar as using the low stack clamp wouldn't allow them to replicate my pad position - I have the pads in front of the clamp. With that done, my position was unchanged.

How did they get the Shiv low stack clamp to attach to the Profile basebar? Did they have to go with new extensions too?

With the profile bar they don't have to use the low stack clamp option. My original extensions are used uncut in what I assume are the standard Profile clamps.

Just bought a SHIV Pro Race . . . only to have the 'stop sale' go into effect. My LBS has no information (i.e., zero) about the recall which is quite frustrating. Welcome any information / pictures / schematics on the proposed solution that I can forward to my LBS to move this process along.

Contact Specialized directly, they will make it right.

The low stack clamps would be unique to the Specialized base bar, I can't imagine them working with another bar unless there is some kind of standard there. The low stack clamps replace the entire "pivot" assembly and attach just like that assembly with bolts from below. You can use the same spacers to adjust height. The pad height is 19mm lower compared to the pivot assembly, so you'd need to add one of the big (20mm) spacers to replicate your old stack height. If you had a bike with the carbon bars, it probably came with a complete set of spacers and screws. If you have a bike with aluminum bars, I think they only came with a couple spacers, so I assume specialized is probably scrambling to get those parts also since everyone should need to add the 20mm spacer.

The pads fasten onto the top of the low stack clamps with the same adjustment positions via bolt placement, but it does not provide the ability to adjust the "rotational" angle since the pads are attached flat to the top of the clamps rather than with a clamp to the extensions.

The extensions need to be cut way down because they don't "pass through" the low stack clamps. The extensions terminate within the clamp and the clamp has a small hole in the rear for cable mounting. The install requires re-cabling the shifters.

The setup is pretty solid and a much safer design from my perspective. I always thought the original design was flawed. One bolt/wedge trying to clamp down a long extension was never a good idea. My only problem with the new setup is that you can no longer angle your extensions up/down independent of your base bar. I like mine angled up a bit, but I don't want my base bar angled up. I may ask my LBS to look into other extension options.

Basically they are swapping in the Low Stack aerobar mount as a replacement for the recalled parts.

Not just Shivs. My 2012 Transition has the hydro-formed bars that were installed by the LBS at time of purchase. I didn't like the stock bars and white tape, I needed/wanted Ski-Bends.

That LBS is telling me they are calling every Monday and so far no date on when they will have the repair kit. They are also telling me not to worry, just don't abuse the bars and I will be fine.

The refits are being done at Specialized dealers. If they have to remove cables, tape, etc. I'm assuming they will replace it. Not sure about stuff like ziptied BTA setups, etc.

They are giving you $100 to spend of Specialized gear, which could help address any equipment inconvenience.

I'm going to talk with my LBS this week. I want to know/agree to what's going to be done before I give them my bike.

Quite frustrated with my local specialized concept store... It all sounded good and they were really helpful at the start of this aerobar issue but now they have had my bike sitting in their workshop waiting for parts to arrive.... They have had the bike for 2 weeks now and don't know when the parts will arrive.I appreciate they are doing all they can, but there was point to take the bikes in if they didn't have the part. This is cluttering their workshop, I don't have my bike and the lack of clear communication on a date makes this a bit frustrating. My first race is now in 7 weeks and although this still leaves plenty times, I would like to ride my bike a few times before.

Anyone in a similar situation?

I took phone pics of my current setup and went into my LBS with those. I wanted to know what their proposed fix was (and that they had the parts) before I handed them my bike.
There are 8,300 recalled Shivs, and Specialized says it's sending out 500 low stack kits a week (do the math).
My shop recommended Teflon taping the bolts to reduce the likelihood of them coming loose in the interim.

Nope. I called Specialized 10 days ago and they said the LBS would have the fix by the later part of last week. I called the LBS on Thursday and it was crickets.....

Mine is fixed. I emailed and went into my LBS (purchased the Shiv in TN, now live in SC so no previous interaction with this shop). The day I stopped by, I brought my bike. By chance they have a new Shiv on the floor. The shop had received one repair kit for the new inventory on their floor. One of the mechanics showed it to me and then said, "if you want to leave your bike, I'll just use this kit and order another one". This was on a Saturday but he said he couldn't get to it until Tuesday. So I took my bike with me (been doing trainer rides) and dropped it off on Tuesday. Picked it up Friday after the repair and full tuneup. When I picked it up they told me that another Shiv owner had been in and they had since ordered another repair kit. Specialized is not committing to delivery dates according to the shop.

The only negative so far - I had a Profile Design computer mount attached to the aero bars and use a X-Lab Torpedo/Gorilla cage BTA setup. With the low stack kit, I cannot get the BTA setup as far back so it interferes with my Garmin mount. I'll figure something out. At least I'm riding it again.

I got the bike back Friday and rode it today. I have a race next weekend so I reached out to Specialized directly and they made sure I had the kit in time.

To answer another question, I have the Torpedo setup and it works fine on the low stack but I'm not sure if that answer changes depending on how narrow your pads are.

There are 8,300 recalled Shivs and Specialized is making 500 low stack kits/week. They might find a way to source more parts, but right now there's a backlog.

You pick out what you want at your LBS and they will then co-ordinate with their warranty rep to get paid back by Specialized. You don't have to get any pre-authorization or rebate card or anything from Specialized - I got this directly from their customer care line. Last night I walked out of my LBS with $100 worth of stuff and never took my wallet out of my pocket. If you are not a regular customer it may be worth giving your LBS a call ahead of time to make sure they are aware of this procedure.

I purchased my 2015 Shiv Pro Race couples months ago, rode it 4-5 times then this recall came out. I took it to my Local Bike Shop and they refused to swap the low stack component because it will messed up my fit which I paid $300 from a Specialized Certified Bike Fitter. I called Specialized and they recommended to take my bike to another dealer which I did, Same scenario, they told me that they cant do it because it will mess up my fit. Now, i have a 2 month old $7000 bike that I cant ride. I also asked if I can take it to Specialized Headquarters ( I live 20 mins away from Morgan Hill,CA) They said no! I feel like I got rip off!!! Nobody from Specialized can help!!!!

Ah,

Good question, I would call and ask the warranty line. In my case I had not had a proper fit yet so I had them do it after the replacement. I also didn't need a new stem :/

I called to get the $100 thing sorted as my store expected me to have a coupon or code other than the letter. I then gave the phone to the shop manager and they sorted things out from there in a minute or two.

Hope they get you riding asap

This is sad. I was one of the first advocate here as the announcement was 2 weeks before my race last march.

Until now, no words from Specialized Asia Pacific for this (Singapore & Philippines)

Well i don't have any choice but to ride it from the race and now training. Just hoping they could really sort this out as much as they are selling more bikes coz of safety.

I have the same fit issue (can't use the low-stack kit). My LBS told me the issue was with the bolt coming loose, so to apply some teflon tape and keep riding the bike until the parts come in. FWIW, I'm also South Bay and being close to Specialized HQ doesn't seem to help.

I seriously hope they don't recommend the T2 wing basebar/T1+ aerobar. That's really low spec, and a significant aero downgrade from the alloy bar that came with the Shiv.
