Norseman 2015 registration is now open
Why race the same races as thousands of other triathletes when you can race something unique?
You can now sign up for the Norseman 2015 lottery.

Why race Norseman?
Check out the 2014 video and you understand why https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN7sgnUs6r0

So how does this lottery work? It says 2750, but that's like 400 US dollars. Is that the registration fee IF I get picked or is that how much a lottery ticket costs?

It is the authorization for the registration cost in Norwegian Krone (1.00 NOK=0.148717 USD today), which gets charged only if you win your lottery spot.

So technically it's free to sign up for the lottery?

Yes.
From the enrollment page: Please note that when you register, we will request an authorization for NOK 2750 on your credit card. We will NOT charge your card unless you are awarded a slot in the 2014 race.

I also entered the lottery. I've been throwing around the idea of trying to get in for a few years and figured I might as well go for it. Good luck to all that are entering the lottery.

Okay, final question and I'll stop bugging you. If for some reason I do get a slot and then decide I don't want it, does it automatically take the money out of my account or do I get a chance to decide if I want to take my slot?

This is from last year's entry email, you have 48-hrs to opt out after finding out you have earned your slot:
Confirmations and cancellations
You do not need to confirm your intent to participate in the race. As you know, we have already reserved the starting fee of NOK 2,750 on your credit card. 48 hours after we send you this e-mail, the amount will be drawn on your card. Please secure that you have adequate funds available on your account.

Your starting slot is personal and is only valid for the 2014 race. It cannot be transferred to another person, or to a later year. If, for whatever reason, you decide that you are unable to participate, you must notify us by e-mail to contact@nxtri.com immediately (no later than 48hours), and before the amount is drawn on your card, to avoid being charged an administration fee. For details, please refer to the section “Cancellations” on page 4 in the Race Manual.

If you're on the fence, you should do it (if you have the fitness for a LOOONG day). Here's my report of my race this past summer:

That is a fabulous race report. And a great resource for all Americans or others that want to race Norseman.
It is hard to nail the course without being there first, but you did well :-)

Nice race report, thanks.

I went through the link for the full epic version and all of the links to the individual legs of the race are broken on your blog so you might want to fix that. :)

I have not raced a triathlon since 2011, but I registered for NXTRI, CXTRI and TRS Sponsorship program. Not sure which I would be most excited to get accepted into.

I am registered for the lottery for both this and Celtman. Lottery starts on the same day but racers are announced on different days. I have wanted to do Norseman for years but Celtman looks like more of an adventure than a standard race with just a very difficult finishing to the run.

Both races are unique. Celtman will give you the best of Scotland and Norseman the best of Norway. If you get the chance to race one of them you will have an great experience.

How many signed up?
Here you have the answer from the Norseman organization.

Registration for the Isklar Norseman Xtreme Triathlon 2015 lottery closed at 18:00 CET November 2nd after having been open for 5 days. A record number of enrollments have been received.
The unofficial count is 192 women and 2175 men.
We will now pull back to do elite seeding and prepare the lottery. The plan is to have everyone informed by November 9th.
Kind regards the Isklar Norseman Team

You should change the lottery system. From the 236 lottery places, there should be maybe six or so for all the athletes who have already raced Norseman once. Just to increase the chance for the people who never started or have already tried for a couple of years and never got in. Just my two cents.

In some ultra trail running (utmb, ccc) you increase your chance each time you enter the draw and get unlucky.

Let the waiting begin. What I can't figure out by reading the site is if you get selected do you still have the option to not accept and then they redraw names until they reach the maximum number of participants that accept the entry?

I'm not an expert but know they weight the odds along lines of Norwegians/Non-Norwegians, men, women, etc. If I remember correctly, they keep half the spots for Norwegians.

First, I think this is totally legit. It's a Norwegian race. It should be weighted for Norwegians. I would imagine the vast majority of repeats are Norwegians. So, in a sense, those (most) repeaters wouldn't be "taking away" from your chance.

I'm guessing not as many International repeaters as you'd guess. It's a very expensive endeavor when you factor in all costs. And it's a hugely challenging race. I will continue to race IMs but I don't need to go back to Norseman. :)

I have no idea if people who have raced before get any kind of preference. Knowing the egalitarian ways of Scandinavia...I'm guessing not?

I was very lucky to get a spot my very first attempt. I'm sure it is frustrating for those who've been trying for a while. The ethos of the race...plus its huge logistical challenges...will never let it expand. The downside of its rising popularity will mean that odds will only get tougher...

Has anyone heard anything yet? Website says they plan to inform everyone by November 9th. Wondering if they have a multi-step process given you have two days to accept the invitation i.e. they let the initial group know and then have another list they go through if there are declines. Anyone know?

Last year they said they would announce on 11/5 and did so on that date. I think it's less of a deadline and more when you can expect to hear whether or not you made it in. Good news is Norway is a few hours ahead of the states so less than 3 days until you find out!!

That being said, once slots are assigned, if anyone wants to know course secrets or get any specific training tips, please PM me. It's a course unlike any other in the world and there are certain things to focus on in training that would be invaluable on this course. I didn't sign up for 2015 (I plan to return in 2016) but would be open to helping walk anyone through the process!

One unique thing about Norseman is the support crew. It is a hard job, especially if you do not know the course or have done it before.

It is hard to understand how fast athletes are biking down the last 30k, so the crew should speed ahead early at Imingfjell.
Also, the crew needs to think about food for themselves. It is a long long day.

I think 2016 has your name on it

I intend to register for the 2019 Swissman. I know...a long time from now, but I have to space the trips. I did Powerman Zofingen this year and want to do IM Switzerland in 2016. Swissman would make the triple-Swiss or something like that.

Celtman doesn't call to me. The highlight videos from the past two years show folks so cold they can barely get out of the water or get dressed. I think the swim is the greatest challenge in that race...at least it would be for me.
