I rolled my right ankle/foot while hiking on Friday. We were camped at 10,500 ft doing a summit of 13,500 ft at the time I rolled it. It was sore while walking but nothing like the bad basketball ankle sprains or broken 5th met (other foot) I've had before. I hiked back to camp and out to the trailhead the next day (about 12 miles total) and it was sore and annoying but not painful. No limping. Some swelling the next day, but no big deal. Got home, rode my bike no issues yesterday and today. Now, my foot is swollen and stiff and a little discolored by the sprain. If I press around the ankle bone the ligaments and tissue are sore but again, nothing like the swelling and pain when I broke my foot 3 years ago. I can weight bear and walk without feeling anything. I've been lazy as hell and haven't done squat with RICE.
So is this normal for swelling to be present without any real pain or functional issues? I read that the swelling is present to protect the ligaments while they heal. Seems logical. No, I haven't gotten an x-ray...the only reason to do so would be because of the swelling as there's no pain.
Thoughts?
