Why swim/bike on the same day rather than swim/run?

I need to start more structured training and most programs seem to double up on swim and bike on the same day. Is there a reason for this or is it just as effective to do swim/run instead (two separate sessions)?

usually your swim and run sessions are less time consuming than the bike workouts

I think running takes more out of you and that may be why the plan shows a day just for running. Other plan put the workouts in the flow of the race....Mon AM - Swim...Mon PM Bike...Tue AM- Run. At the end of the day, I don't think it matters just give yourself time to recover each day.

That's why I'd like to do swim/run on the same day...less chance of running out of time for the bike. And cycling is what I need to work on the most, so I want to set myself up for success in training!

No reason to do them in any order when done separately.

Since I run every day, swim 4 to 5 days a week and bike 4 days a week there are times that I will swim and run in the same day, and maybe not in that order either.

You will need to put a priority on each one though.

I end up doing all of my swims on the same days as runs. I do the run at lunch, then swim in the evening. I feel that the swim acts as active recovery for the legs and they feel better the next day then they would without the swim.

I usually do a run/swim on the same day. Its actually really easy to swim after, especially after running on the treadmill (intervals, tempo, whatever). Now it feels weird to swim without having run before.

If I double up during the week - when I have less time to train- I typically Run/ Swim. 2 reasons:

Time: - a 30-45 minute run can be a great workout. A 30-45 swim is effective for me to get some meaningful yards in.

Combined - it's a solid day at the office.

Also - i typically avoid swimming prior to bike/run, because sweating chlorine sucks.

I try to brick my work outs. 3 days a week I swim an hour, then come home and spin on the bike trainer for an hour, then jump on the treadmill for 10 minutes.

The other 3 days a week I ride the Martis/Brockway portion of IMLT for an hour, then head out for my hilly 1.5 hour run.

I try to get a long hilly outdoor bike ride for the 7th day.

Seems to work for me.

During race season, my goal is to get to the pool every weekday at lunch time (the only time it's generally available to me). It doesn't always line up perfectly, but I'll usually get 4 weekdays and perhaps one on the weekends. Since I'm swimming 4-5 days per week, I end up doing either a run or bike double nearly every swim day. Deciding between run/bike is almost exclusively a function of recent run/bike loading.

I'll do weekday triples on occasion (am ride, noon swim, pm run), but one of the three is always a recovery workout. The beauty of doubling up on swim days is that you can generally pair a hard swim with either a hard run or hard bike, but you can't regularly pair hard run and hard bike on the same day without some additional recovery.

It seems to take athletes a few years to get comfortable with layering workouts, and the greatest hurdle appears to be the confidence to navigate around scheduling obstacles, for which I would include passing on a scheduled workout when recovery is needed.

I am not a swim newbie. Yet I seem to wind up with a significant amount of pool water in my stomach after swim practices. This will result in extreme GI distress if I run less than 4 hours after a swim. Run- swim is very relaxing.

This is great, lots of options. It sounds as though I can work with any combination that allows me to fit all my sessions into a week, with attention to ensuring I schedule hard and recovery sessions appropriately. Thanks!

FWIW, I run 6 days/week so I'm always doubling on both bike and swim. I save my longer runs for swim days so my legs aren't as roached from the bike. weekends usually have 1 day with all 3.
