Try Something New
Everyone can add to this.

My try something new is actually a go back to high school time (so that's been a LONG time so like new). I signed up for a swim meet. The Tennessee Senior Olympics are in June here so I signed up for one of the bike races and some swim races. The swim will be at the pool I'm swimming at.

Today at the end of our workout, we did a timed 200 LCM. I have a lot of work to do by late June!

Cool!

Since we're now living in a mt biking mecca (Bend OR) I'm going to try and become a mountain biker. And possibly a rock climber.

I've already changed my wine drinking ways to accommodate the fabulous beer here and damn, it's SO good!

Swim meets are great - I only started doing them in the last 12 months and they're so much fun. I particularly like the relays - people everywhere in all sorts of shapes, sizes and ages. Fabulous!

I did summer biathlon for the first time yesterday. The kid came along too and proved to be not a bad shot for a sweet young thing. Definitely going back to do that again!

I fell in love with mountain biking competing in Xterra off-road races. I prefer it to riding on the road! So much fun.

This is embarrassing to admit, but I'm going to train daily, instead of working so much. I can honestly admit that I've put my job in front of my passion for too long.

My new thing is to swim with Mark Montgomery's old team, Nova Masters in Irvine, CA. I have a feeling that I will be eaten alive, but maybe there will be someone older and slower than me :-/

Good for you. I'm still in the having to work too much and last evening the HR gal told me that the overall HR head declined to approve the new position for someone to help me. So last night over drinks with my co-worker who is here from NY, she said put my head down, don't complain about the work load, pump as much overtime as I can and see if that causes them to change their mind. So I'll fit training in when I can, make a shitload of money, pay some stuff off, sock some into savings, finish doing stuff around my house that I want done (like a workout room) and buy a new computer. What is it they say, make lemonade out of lemons?

I just got a massive, high visibility, tight timeline project put on my shoulders. That means any dreams of summer vacation have once again been put on hold. I seriously want to cry I need a break so badly. Even a long weekend is likely out of the question.

I'm going to pick a class at the gym and try it. I have two gyms to pick from so I should find something that works. I'm not doing Zumba or anything that involves dancing. I am not coordinated and I'd like to keep my ego intact thankyouverymuch.

I've just signed up for my first trail run!

Surf Coast half marathon which is on a very pretty bit of Victoria's South West coast, so should be very scenic if I'm not tripping over.

It's also a couple of days before my significant birthday, so it's a bit of a birthday treat:-)

Plus another round of summer biathlon is coming up in a few weeks - I'm enjoying this new stuff!!

Do the tap class. DO IT! I was a competitive dancer in my youth (5-17) and tap is seriously some of the most fun you can have with shoes on. I still have my old tap shoes and throw them on from time to time just for giggles, or just throw down in regular shoes.

Cheers!

I'd say, think FAR outside the box!

A few years ago, Groupon etc. were great sources for Try-Something-New activities. I try to do something new often. Some of the things I've done:
  • Circus school tumbling and acrobatics class
  • Flying trapeze class
  • S factor pole dancing class
  • Vinyasa yoga
  • Surfing
  • Stand-up paddling
  • Chocolate class at the Ritz Carlton
  • Pie-crust making class

A few I still want to try:
  • PureBarre fitness
  • SUP yoga
  • Tango class
  • Hydrobikes
  • Cupcake tour of Hollywood (also dumpling tour, chocolate tour, etc.)
  • Hang gliding class
  • Sailing lessons

And paragliding. I want to do paragliding before I die.

I took my kid off to do a pig day a couple of weeks ago - start with a cleaned rare breed pig carcase and learn what to do with it. Prosciutto, salami, pancetta, cotechino, head cheese, sausages etc. Had a great time :-)

I ended up in a Zumba class the night before. The instructor and the ladies were all great, and boy can they shake it! I wasn't very comfortable, and felt very stiff and out of sorts, but I'm glad I did it. Now I can say that I've tried it and it's not for me. I can tell it can be a great workout if you get the hang of it.

I went shopping with a personal shopper yesterday. My sister & I scored the package from a silent auction. In the "it's a small world" category - I grew up/went to school with her! It was a lot of fun & I scored some great deals on some great clothes. I had to stop trying on pants (6 weeks of injury related inactivity), but got some dressier tops/skirts & a kick ass pair of heels.

Went to a high end consignment store I didn't even know existed & the time flew by. Even better, my sister recently lost a lot of weight & actually had fun shopping!!

It was a really great day & a much needed infusion of fun/different/pampering.

Love all the cool "new things" ladies!

I signed up for yoga class - it's once a week at work at lunch - and dirt cheap. Worth a try. First one is next Fri.

We also signed up for a local farmer's "beasty box" - once a week for 8 weeks we get fresh organic local meat and fish - first pick up is tonight and we get smoked ham, chili con carne (yes - prepared and ready for the freezer if need be), beef steaks, and 1/2 of bacon :-)

Went for my first real trail run today in my new Altras with the kid on her mountain bike. Loved it! (Loved the shoes too)

Wildlife count of 4 wallabies, one horse, numerous noisy birds and a few paddling ones.

One large storm cloud didn't manage to spoil the fun - can't believe I've been running for footpaths for so long and haven't strayed off before.

Finally worked up the nerve to go to one of the local masters groups (thanks in large part to LilPups). It was a good workout and everyone was nice to me, so I'm going to try to keep going. Lord knows, my swimming could use the boost.

Now I just need to get those flip turns going. (Gulp!)

If I can flip turn, you can flip turn. Have LP give you a private lesson when the pool is slow then practice.

You can do it.

Flipt turns are an acquired skill but you can do it! Start with just trying somersaults not near the wall. I often have people do forward and backward somersaults (I have always found backward easier). When you get ready to do them near the wall, look for the black T on the bottom of the pool and the lowercase t on the side. You should start your flip as your head moves over the t on the bottom, and you should not see anything above the middle of the t on the side (if you see the top, your head is way too high and it will make the whole thing harder).

You know how it's amazing to watch gymnasts on the uneven bars? Flip turns are a trick like that, I think :P

So... I had my first yoga class today. My company has an instructor that comes in to our office every Friday and you get 10 sessions for $75. I warned her I was the newbie and she said do as little or as much as I felt comfortable doing. Well, I was able to nail a lot of the advanced poses and holds, and even though I didn't really like the 5min of laying around at the end, overall it was a good experience and I think it will help with my tight hips/back. After the class, the instructor said that I had very good leg & core strength and did way better than most new folks.

Now: how stiff (and in what weird places) will I be tomorrow?!? :-)

I know, I know... just like what my master's swim coach used to say - "the drill you hate the most is the one you need to DO the most..."

I have not really learned how to turn the brain off, unless I am physically exhausted (or better put, I have trained myself to only unplug once I'm really tired). I think if it had been a longer or more intense session, then perhaps the 5min of laying around might have felt more "useful"...

Something to practice I guess? :-)

I learned to turn my brain off with guided meditation. Because I feel you...laying around doing nothing?...ack, that was annoying to my brain! But the health and performance benefits of getting in touch with the peaceful, meditative side of our brain/mind...I finally couldn't stand to not have those gains anymore, so I dove in with (don't laugh) one of the Oprah & Deepak ones. They were so easy to listen to compared to other chanting type ones I'd tried before. I bought it to save on my phone and would listen to it and sometimes "meditate" and other times just sit quietly reflecting. Either way, it helped me get much more comfortable with turning my brain off.

How do you feel today? I took my 3rd Barre class today and it was way tougher than earlier in the week. I felt a little barfy at one point. But I'm woefully out of shape especially with repetitive, tiny motion squatting and lifting sort of things. We do yoga inspired cool down at the end and I wish it included 5 minutes of laying!

(I took a different class a few years ago that ended with 5 min of quite time and I hated it! Now I want it :-)

I can feel a bit of stiffness in my 1st (front) head of my shoulders! (delts) - I am pathetically weak up top so this is not really a surprise to me. And my left glute a bit - the skating is imbalanced R vs L so again not a huge surprise.

I grew up doing ballet so the thought of being at the barre again... hmm... :-)

I enjoyed it. It hurt, but I enjoyed the barre classes more than I thought I would! Also, it made me super toned. Not strong, but toned.

I was actually just thinking bar method might be good ankle rehab in about 6 months once I can stand on one foot and have some ankle flexibility. Should thank QRgirl for the reminder. :-)

I went and did single track mtb for the first time in my life yesterday. What a hoot!!

Of course, being a roadie triathlete I did everything wrong. Put my seat up nice & high, pumped my tyres up nice and hard. Had no idea those fork things on the front were s'posed to be set up so they could go bouncy bouncy :-)

Luckily I went with one of my best bike buddies and he got me sorted out with mtb 101 pretty quickly. Dropped my seat, let the air out of my tyres, did whatever he needed to do to get some bounce in my forks, swore at the LBS 'coz they didn't do that before I left the shop.... Gave me about 30 seconds of instructions - at least one gear down from what you think you need all the time, arse in the air as soon as it it gets lumpy, get the elbows out. Off we go...

Hardest thing was the mental hurdle that comes with riding 20mm tyres on nice smooth hard bitumen... "Oh my fucking God, will you look at the size of that rock!!! I'm never going to go over that without falling off!!! Fuck!! I got over it!!! SHIT!! Look at that tight little dirt corner full of tree roots!!! I'm never going to get around that!!! Bloody hell, I made it!! Jesus wept, look at that friggin' steep bit with all the ruts in it, I'm never going to get down that!!...." and so on..

One banged up elbow, massive black bruise on my hip, scratches all down my legs. Haven't had that much fun in a long time! :-)

Awesome! I love mtb - only started doing it myself ~4 yrs ago. I don't do it as much as I'd like as I have terrible balance and tend to bang myself up pretty good - which is not good when training for big A races. I did train for IMNZ almost exclusively on the mtb as I didn't want to road ride thru the winter... it really does help you with power, climbing.

I did my first trail half marathon today - had a ball!!

It was the Inaugural Surf Coast Trail Marathon event and was super impressive. Fantastic run, great organisation. http://www.surfcoasttrailmarathon.com.au

To make it a bit more interesting, the weather has been super filthy the last week and there were king tides, so there was an abundance of soft sand, rogue waves & the occasional fence clambering (OK, I'm a triathlete, not a seasoned & hairy trail runner and I didn't want to get my precious new trail shoes wet).

Hills, rocks, mud and all that stuff that is totally new to me, along with spectacular views. Well into it as I was twisting & turning through tea tree scrub & trying not to trip on tree roots I was enthusiastically planning doing the full next time.

Road running suddenly feels rather pale & boring in comparison...

So after a nice little trail ride with the husband last night, I finally worked up the cojones to try out the bike park that my city built in the middle of the park at the trailhead. It's only a 2min ride from my house.

Had I actually stopped to read the sign first, I'd have known that I started the intermediate section in the wrong damn direction instead of having a bunch of 15 year old kids tell me. They were kind about it, at least, and when I got out of the way and read the sign I retreated gratefully to the separate beginner track.

I was quite slow, of course, and got no air at all - just riding over the hits was thrilling (petrifying?) enough. It's designed for BMX, and even my 26er hardtail felt a bit big in the tight turns. I'm sure the kids got a good laugh out of the silly woman in spandex making a fool of herself, but I stayed upright and giggled a lot. Husband took a turn through the beginner section as well (on his monstrosity of a 29er) and wasn't much faster than I was, but definitely more confident since he's the one with the off-road skillz.

It was a good laugh, and I'm sure I'll go back. May take me some time before I'm willing to even go hit the intermediate bit again (let alone the advanced track), but it was fun!

Here's what the intermediate line is supposed to look like: video

And the advanced (yikes): video

And first-person view through the advanced - my gut clenches just watching it: video

Cheers!

Next is tap. Better try it in Aug cuz skating season is around the corner!!!

I've signed up to swim individual medley for the first time at the next Masters swim meet in a couple of weeks.

It's short course, so I'm counting on the 'fly bit being no more than about 15m by the time I surface and it's indoors so I should have the roof to navigate by in the back :-)

Stuck with a hotel pool most of next week which should be perfect for practising my turns!

Couldn't 'fly at all this time last year, so fronting up to do IM in Masters public is a step up for me.

Little did I know what I was in for... a bloody exhibition swim!!!

Being at the slow end of the field I was in heat one. To my horror when the program was published it was just me and two old blokes. Nowhere to hide. Swimming excruciatingly bad IM in front of stands full of masters swimmers. As if that wasn't bad enough, one of the old blokes failed to front so it was just me & one old bloke. Luckily we swim for the same club so I think we both got some comfort from that.

My dive start felt passable and my fly was feeling OK until I spotted the marshals at the end of the pool as they all had a slightly concerned look on their face as if they doubted I was going to make it. Marshals possibly look like that most of the time and they could well have been thinking about whether I was going to touch with both hands but it wasn't helping. I hope they were thinking about that actually as I certainly wasn't...

Into the backstroke & that was good as I was on my back and able to gasp for air. Even managed to turn at the end without either headbutting the wall or breaking fingers. Bonus!

Then I hit trouble.. I'd totally gassed myself by that stage and was perilously close to panic attack trying to get things under control and my head under water for the breaststroke. All the relaxed gliding strokes I'd been practicing during the week were completely out the window. To my dying shame I resorted to a few strokes of old lady "just had my hair done" head out of the water breast stroke half way up the pool to get some air in. In front of all those real swimmers. Oh my lord!! I managed to get it together in the last few strokes and another view of those disturbingly concerned marshals.

Last turn was reasonable and into some freestyle on the home stretch with some relief. Bet those marshals were feeling it too. High fived the old bloke when he finished and realised I'd PB'd by about 10 seconds. Yay!!

Still don't feel like a 'real' swimmer but it's one little personal challenge that will feature in my year's highlights if not the club record books :-)

I love your story. Good job getting out there. I swam summer club as a kid and I still hate the idea of IM - it's a tough one.

I need to "try something new", I just don't know what.

Oh my goodness you are brave! Good for you for doing it and getting a PB out of it!

Thanks gals!

clm, that one was only 100IM - next little swim challenge is 50m fly without doing the last 5m completely underwater so 400IM is still a way off for me:-)

My next 'try something new' is an interstate 70.3 in a couple of weeks. The swim/ride/run bit I'm all good with but the new bit is travelling solo and getting my bike into raceable shape at the other end. All doable but I'm sure I'll learn a few things along the way.

I think the key is just signing up for something and trusting that it'll be OK. Unless of course it's bungy jumping as I can't see any way that would ever be OK..

Since I still haven't been able to return to running/cycling, I looked around for something new that I could do. Yesterday I had my first kayak lesson from a friend. Learned how to get in a kayak from the shore--and tipped it over; learned how to get into a kayak while in the water--and tipped it over; learned wet exits--which meant I was tipped over; and then learning bracing against waves, got tipped over again, but this time I couldn't get quickly free from the kayak. Was futilely reaching above water while still stuck upside down. Good thing I had practice being upside down from the wet exits, or I might have freaked.

The funny thing was, I wasn't worried about drowning, I was worried about pulling my back. Once I got free though, saw I had amassed quite an audience--that was worried about me going under.

Had a blast and am looking forward to the next one.

So, my something new...

Well, I might be getting a new ride. It's not what you think though. I might be doing a half lease on a Palomino-Thoroughbred mix. I've been riding (English) for about two years now and it's time to up the ante.

Fingers crossed, I should know more in a week or two...

So, the horse lease has been put on hold for a few months because another 'something new' happened. We adopted a newborn baby girl in August. It was a very last minute placement so we literally became parents overnight. Now that we're starting to find a new rhythm though I'm looking forward to getting back to horseback riding. And I've already told 'baby bird' she can have a horse when she gets older. :)

Well, that was pretty successful.

First crack at 70.3, first solo trip interstate with my bike. First drafting penalty. *sigh* .. Big learning experience all around.

Learned that I can pull my bike apart and put it back together and an old tube is a really useful bit of kit in the toolbag, along with a box cutter. Both invaluable. Learned that an ocean swim on a good day is awesome. Really awesome. Learned that I'm not as good as judging drafting zones as I thought I was - "You're drifting in and out of the zone, go directly to the penalty box". Learned to live with it. Learned that you can have worse experiences in life - like the poor guy who didn't make it through the swim. Learned that most of the food I pack in a race is unnecessary (after it popped out & I lost it 5km into the bike). Learned that I can run through more aid stations in more discomfort than I thought I could and leave less in the tank than after a 140.6.

Learned that I'm pretty happy to go and race solo anywhere I choose. That was worth learning:-)
