Pearl Izumi Octane tri suit
Has anyone had any experience with this suit? I'm competing in my first year of triathlon and still need a suit. I was considering this one because it has sleeves and my first races are going to be relatively cold outside. I would also use it as a skin suit for the local time trials as well.

thanks in advance.

Great suit, great fit. Chamois dries quickly out of the water.

No issues for me with it at all.

Noticed a great deal on these atm on line so wanting to buy one but worried about being between sizes L & XL. I'm 6'2 and about 200lb. By their size chart I'm top of L and bottom of XL in chest and waist but hips are closer to top of M bottom of L. They don't seem to coincide. Im thinking probably L but want to use for bike and run in tri's so don't want too tight for run (will be under a wetsuit)
Are they true to size or do they size big/small?
Any thoughts?

I'm 6'2", 180lbs and wear a medium. I would say I have large legs, small arms, and medium torso and so the M suit fits very well with minimal wrinkles.

You should be able to make it work with a number of sizes, so go with the one that gives you the least wrinkles in the arms and shoulders.

I'm looking for a similar suit and I've read on here this should be one of the fastest options for all around tri performance.

Has anybody closer to 6'0" and 160lbs or so worn one of these and comment on size? I'm obviously smaller than the guy that wears a medium but I don't know if I can squeeze into a small!

I'm 6'0" and 165-170 lbs. Wider than average shoulders and bigger than average legs. Medium fits me great. The small is probably not long enough for someone our height.

I just got my in today in a small. I'm 6'1 and 157-160lbs. Its tight but it fits. I don't have any of the bunching going on that was mentioned on the aero camp thread that makes the suit actually slower for some people. I'm going to order a medium to compare it to though because with it being so tight I'm not sure how comfortable it would be to run in.

I have a medium that I have only tried on but not race in yet. I am 6'0", 165-170lbs depending on the time of year. According to the size chart, all my measurements fall right on the line between small and medium. The medium fits alright most places, but when in aero position there are quite a few wrinkles in the armpit and hip areas. That pretty much defeats the purpose of the suit, so I just ordered a small to try out. If I can wear it comfortably, that's what I'll go with.

Where were you guys a month ago when I was going through the motions of deciding on/ordering mine!?!? I burn easy, so I'm going to welcome a little additional sun protection on my back/shoulders. I'm 5'9, 135lbs, and did all the measurements to figure out size. Reading this thread makes me think I should've gone with small. So...who wants to swap small for medium for a fit test (black and red color scheme)? :) I've only tried mine on...haven't put any miles on it yet. -j

I'm 6' 0.5" ~152lbs and could not physically fit into a small. It simply wasn't long enough for my torso. My legs and torso are fairly normal length for my height. I had to hunch over to get it over my shoulders and even then it wouldn't come close to zipping up. I'm fairly skinny, but I do have a little bit of upper body mass from a swimming background. I ended up going with a medium and it fits well, although it is a little loose around my upper arms. No wrinkles or anything though.

I'm kind of surprised at the sizes that some of the taller/heavier guys are able to fit into. It felt like the small would have burst apart at the seams if I had attempted to zip it up or do anything like swimming or running in it. I recently tested the medium in the wind tunnel and it still performed far better than a sleeveless two piece tri suit and slightly better than a long sleeve cycling skin suit. I could hear the sleeves moving a little bit in the wind and thought it probably wasn't going to be a great result, but it still worked out really well.

I think you can fit but it be real close and being comfortable on the run after would be my concern. Right now I'm 8-9lbs less then you and thats my concern. I just order a medium to see how that fits. I'll let you know how it compares.

I suppose some of what isn't captured in the sizing is the leg/torso length. I have long legs and a short torso. I'd love to squeeze into a small, but I would like to be able to stand up straight as well!

I'm a little taller and heavier and fit in the medium (6'2.5", 194#) The large was a little less snug, but baggy in the arms. Just a heads up on that. I'm hoping to race whistler in the mid-low 180s.

Oh I know there will be new technology coming...I just don't want the inevitable sunburn that will also be coming. If anything, I'll sell the suit. Pearl Izumi told me that there will be no new Octane Tri suits on the market until 2015. Therefore, we are stuck with the red/black or the blue/black.

I have heard rumblings that there will be a lot of new suits this year as manufacturers are learning. I don't want to have to give up the time on this springs races. I guess I'll add this to the list of aero things that I will be selling for a loss at the end of the year.

I figure there will be a lot out this year and it will take time to see any data from testing, so it will really be 2015 race season before one can buy confidently.

I recieved my large Octane Tri suit today. Wow this thing fits tight around the chest. It feels fine everywhere else but with the zipper all the way up, it touches my neck and is a little tight. I am right in the middle of the Large for my chest (42") so I know I have the correct size. How tight is this suit supposed to be? The pad sucks. I wish it had way more padding. I'll try it in my upcoming half but I may buy the Castelli T1 Stealth to try it too

It is a suit focused on the bike, you pretty much have to unzip it to be comfortable on the run. The pad is at par with a lot of the others out there, I prefer having a thin pad in a race over the thicker ones.

Also aren't there some tops that are a bit more aero than a traditional sleeveless? Maybe I will buy just a top to wear with my current bottoms. The long sleeve white ones look cooler and fast

I tried one on this weekend at the PI outlet store in Ft. Worth. I really want it because it tests fast but I believe running in it would SUCK! Thinking that 1:30 I would save thorugh 56 miles would turn into 2-5 extra minutes on the run. Maybe will just stick to comfort and take that edge.

I am about the same size and all I would add is that I need to pay attention to the sleeves or there will be some wrinkles in them. I think that this is a tradeoff for being able to swim and run in the thing though. Fits me perfectly elsewhere.

It doesn't really matter; what is fast on someone else is probably likely to not necessarily be your fastest option.

For example, the total delta in grams of drag for me from tight-fitting 2 pc tri apparel to Castelli Body Paint 3 skinsuit was exceptionally small. It's so individual that making apparel purchasing decisions based on trends is even less of a certainty than basing helmet purchases off trends.

same here. i get a few wrinkles over the armpits, in front of my shoulders. For those of you winning by 2 seconds, I can understand where this might be important. For me... not so much. it's a comfortable suit. I bought it on sale at Trisports and had no idea it had tested so fast. Just liked it... and it was on sale. guess I got lucky.

I can also report that the 'cold black' fabric does indeed work. not that it feels 'cold' in the sun, but it doesn't feel as warm as what a black suit would normally feel. I've done a couple hot sunny races in it.

I went on the tighter end all the way around rather then give up some wrinkles. It is a little harder to get on but not terrible.. I will post pictures tomorrow as I am heading out for a late run.

The chest on my small is tight but the medium isn't bad. I actually have less wrinkles with the medium too. I think the small was just pulling way to much. I'm heading to the wind tunnel today so hopefully I'll have time to test it. Gotta dial my position in and find a helmet first.

Update from the tunnel. I tested a small and medium. The difference between the 2 was so small it makes sense for me to go with the medium. At 15 degrees I could feel the sleeve slightly catching wind but nothing significant. I don't have the exact numbers yet (should have them tonight) but it tested way better than my 2 piece Kiwami kit. The Fusion top tested better than my current kit. I wish I had a Castelli T1 top to try.

I'm just a little taller and a little heavier than you...took all the measurements and was pushing the upper limit of the S, but in the end I think it fit me better than the M, too.

Do you have really big arms or something? I'm bigger than you (6'2.5" 193lbs) and fit into a medium. The medium is skin tight, but I assume that is how it is supposed to fit. The large was baggy on my arms.

The XL was more comfortable around the chest but too loose around the arms and legs. I could put a finger between my quads and the suit. I found that if i adjusted the Large when I put it on, it fits better. I sent the XL back to Amazon today.

Not yet. Reading the responses I'm thinking both L and XL will fit me but each may be slightly too big or too small. Because I'll be using it for Tri only and will be wanting to run in a bit of comfort (and I'm not getting any younger), I'll prob opt for the XL

Seems like most of the guys on here are sticks and I think we're a similar size. I'm an inch shorter than you and down to ~188 at race weight. Usually starting the season closer to 200 though. 43-44 chest and 34 waist with the measuring tape. I have the sleeveless version in a large but it was flapping around and catching lots of wind on the bike and also opened up in non-wetsuit swims. Otherwise the fit was spot on and I had used it under regular jerseys like bibs because of how well it fit. I eventually had the straps altered (shortened?) to get the top up a little higher. The neck hole is huge so you can slip it on, but it also became a sail. The modification only slightly helped. I was truthfully debating sizing down to a medium for a little bit (on the sleeved octane), but will be ordering the large shortly.

These suits leave almost nothing to the imagination.

I'm 43 chest, 37 hip, 35 waist, 34.5 inseam , 24 leg , 20.5 shoulder width and 14 arm (more popgun than gun) - all inches. Wish their sizing had all of these indicated so buying on line was less hit and miss.

I'm now thinking large as well but let me know how you go

I'm a 41" chest, 33 waist, not sure on hip and 33-34" inseam and ended up in a medium. It is skin tight but not pulling too much that it is uncomfortable.

gunsbuns,

I'm within a half inch or so of all those measurements, except your inseam is longer. From my experience with the sleeveless Pro Tri Suit in a large, you will have a bit of extra material with the XL. I maybe could have managed a medium, but the large was plenty tight except for the top becoming a sail on the bike. Plus it's really hard to get in and out of without a zipper. If they added a zipper and closed up the neck opening so it didn't catch water/wind, I would buy the sleeveless again.

Since you and I have a bigger chest, shoulders and arms than many triathletes, the sleeves are probably the only thing that could possibly get in the way. My understanding is that chest circumference will be slightly smaller in the aero position and you will want to run with the front unzipped, so I'm not worried about the chest measurement.

For two of the other brands I have tried on one piece suits, an XL seems to be the right fit. PI stuff matches up well to their own sizing charts, but keep in mind a large for a Pearl Izumi top is darn near an XL-XXL in high performance fits of some other brands.

The range of opinions and body sizes regarding the fit of this suit is amazing. I am 5' 8", 155 lbs and 32.5' waist. My race weight is 150. Seems like a natural for a Medium but I've seen some posts by guys bigger than me that a Small fits them, and folks near the same size as me saying a Small is too tight. It would be nice to be able to actually try them on before purchasing.

I'd say your definitely a small. I could fit a small at 6'1 and 158lbs. Only issue was it wouldn't have been comfortable to run in. With you being 3" shorter you shouldn't have that problem. The small had more wrinkles and tested worse on me in the wind tunnel. I contribute this to it being too tight and pulling the material in all the wrong places.

If it helps for some of the larger guys, hold off till tonight. I'll post of pic with my dimensions for fit. Things to consider where you are giving weight/size is body composition...some people can be a slip 200lbs and some can be a big 200lbs.

6'3, 200lbs and I have a large. I'd almost consider a medium...

Has anyone tried this suit in the Heat. I'm 6 1", 163, 33 waist, and the large is snug. Chest is snug...so much so, I know I'll be opening up the zipper to breath.

My concern is how will this suit do in the heat?: http://www.wunderground.com/...st/zmw:84791.3.99999

Used the PI Octane for IMAZ last November. Temperature got up to 75/76F on the run. Suit worked just fine.

An added benefit is the SPF50 rating, as my goal is to finish the race the same color that I started.

Suit is fine in the heat as long as you keep it wet. I unzip mine all the way on the run to allow ice to get to the twins easily and when you drop ice down the back it tends to sit on your lower back.

GB,

I wanted to get back to you since our measurements were so similar. I finally picked one up and have spent minimal time in it. The large was spot on. The chest is slightly tight when zipped, but feels fine on the bike. Open the zipper up for the run and I have plenty of room. I have no idea how PeteD fit into a medium, but I can't say that I actually tried a medium.

Haven't done a swim without a wetsuit so I can't tell if there is any additional restriction while swimming. The legs and sleeves are fairly long. The sleeves came right to my elbows. I'm a fan of that. There are basically zero wrinkles on the shoulders and arms and I think you would be similar since cool dudes know how to fill out their sleeves.

Just like the sleeveless version from two seasons ago, there's good package support but it leaves nothing to the imagination. You may want to keep your race belt on and keep your number in a strategic location post-race.

The pad is the same one they have been using in their elite and pro tri shorts for a couple years. There's hardly anything to it, but it dries fast and is comfortable to run in.

I can't answer the heat question yet. If I'm racing and it's above 40, I'm sweating. Really hard to compare to anything else in that regard. After how sunburned I got last weekend, I'm pretty excited about the extra coverage.

dangle, thanks for the thoroughly detailed description of the suit! I'm 6'0", 158lbs and am deciding between a S and M. I am thinking of going with the S for a tight fit. IMFL will be my first IM distance. I plan to wear this under a full wetsuit, and then put on cycling shorts for the ride.

Did you wear the top under the wetsuit or have it rolled down? If it was up, how did the shoulders/armpits feel under the wetsuit? If you had it rolled down, did you have any issues rolling it up in T1?

Also, how is the chamois seam? You mentioned it isn't a problem for running. I have a PI Attack tri short. Is it similar to that?

Thanks!

Yeah I'm amazed that I fit in a medium. It was probably a touch too tight, but after the first wash (delicate/cold/hang dry) it actually is much more comfortable. I don't think it stretched out as I've cut down to 185 right now as well.

I'm a bit heavier than you and I wear a small. It's fine under a wetsuit, and if you choose to roll it down it's easy to put on in T1, just be careful because the zipper area can tear if the suit is really tight and you zip it up in a rush (but I wouldn't roll it down for a wetsuit swim).

No idea what to tell you for sizing. Sorry. I'm still holding to the idea of chest measurement being important. If you are between sizes, go smaller. Your chest is smaller when in the aero position and you can unzip it for the swim and run. There's no way that I would ever roll it down for a wetsuit swim because I would have nothing but issues getting it back up. I'm not new to one piece suits and this has been the hardest one to get on. I have no idea how people do it wet without help from somebody else or tearing the suit. It's really lightweight fabric. FWIW, I probably have much bigger arms and shoulders than you though. We're about the same height and I'm 30+lbs heavier at ~10% BF.

Why would you wear this for the swim and then put cycling shorts on after? Maybe that's a typo...

Comparing the resistance of shoulder movement between a wetsuit and the Octane is like comparing a puddle to a lake. Maybe you will notice some shoulder resistance with the Octane alone, but you shouldn't notice further resistance while wearing a wetsuit.

Enough with the arm/shoulder wrinkle stuff. The feeling of being choked to death while swimming or running isn't worth the 0.5 watts of drag on the bike.

I'm a big fan of the cost/quality ratio of that PI Attack short. The Attack chamois is more of a fleece material and I don't know if I have ever gotten it wet before. The pad in the Octane is different. Maybe slightly less padding, but it dries well and runs just fine. It feels like there is "less" down there than the Attack. Maybe the Attack chamois is slightly more loose and can bunch up a little?

One final note, I would probably unzip the suit for the swim and try to pull the neck down a little. The higher neck of the Octane combined with a wetsuit can cause major rubbing no matter what skin prep you use. I used it zipped up for a 1.2 swim and tore up my neck pretty well. Zip it for the bike and unzip for the run.

This must be a person to person thing. I swam with it zipped up yesterday at Syracuse and there isn't a mark to be found on my neck. I used plenty of body glide and had zero issues with it chafing me.

Also, FWIW, I am 6'0" and 168lbs and wear medium. I was really close to being able to squeeze into a small. For anyone 5lbs or so lighter I'm sure they could make that work.

It won't...they are revamping this kit and it will put into the custom line. As of right now, they have pulled the suit (pictured) from the inline options. My guess is that it will be back once the changes have been made.

After seeing it in the Triathlete Buyer's Guide I emailed PI before buying my Octane. They said something about the fabric they wanted to use not being up to their standards for production. Or something like that. Basically there are not any new Octane options this year.

SB,

I had zero issues before, but something was different during the slightly longer swim. This hicky is still scabbed over 9 days later.

My main point was that some may be at higher risk because the neck comes up higher than most tri tops.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I'm going to wear cycling shorts over it for the ride. I can run a half in the attack, so hopefully no issues with the octane for the full. Yeah I have twigs for arms and legs, so the small should be fine. The inseam and arm length don't shorten with size, right? The length looks like good support. I can only find the ugly cobra commander black/red in small now. Oh well.

So the fact that the Octane was designed to be faster aerodynamically because of less seams, sleeves and special fabric is irrelevant I guess? Throwing a pair of bike shorts over them means you will have seems and loose material where it should have been tight and smooth. You might as well just change into the bike shorts and a well fit top then change into shorts and a running shirt at T2.

Stupidest thing I have ever read. The Octane was designed as 1 piece for aerodynamics. By adding cycling shorts...you are wasting time putting them on and taking them off. This negates any aerodynamic advantage. Either buy the suit and wear it the way it was designed...or don't wear it

Considering going with the split style. I could try changing out my shorts, but I would have to run to the bathroom then back to my bike? I was interested in this suit because of the shoulder coverage. I think it being a full suit would be comfortable for the whole ride? Like I said, this is my first IM distance. I am more interested in comfort so I can finish. Maybe after I finish my first IM, get as fast as you guys, and get in more ride time so I can handle the ride with just a felt pad, I'll consider riding the entire thing in just this suit. Besides...10 seconds to put on shorts and 3 seconds to take them off. How long does it take you to dress?

If comfort os the main concern with sunburn avoidance a close second, why not ride with regular bike shorts (or good tri shorts - I find Skinfit shorts comfortable enough for 250km rides) and a regular jersey? Plenty of folks do that when they're not aiming for top times.

Got my size large from Sierra Trading Post last night. I'm 180lbs, 6'0" with a slightly long torso. Fit is great, but I think I could have easily sized down. I'm hoping to go down another 10 pounds and I expect that the large will be too big at that point. Overall I love the fit and quality. The only place I have wrinkles right now is on the front of the shoulders and I think I can probably work those out.

Having come from only ever wearing split kits I wasn't prepared for just how "on display" the one piece makes you feel. Good thing I don't have confidence issues.

Then why spend that much money on the octane? If comfort is what your looking for just wear your cycling shorts and a cycling top for the shoulder coverage.

Your IM will have a change tent where you can change and a lot of people will be changing in. No shame in wearing what is comfortable but putting bike shorts over an octane suit is a bit of a waste for the reasons given above. Have you ridden with bike shorts over tri shorts (or the octane suit) before? I can't imagine it would be very comfortable. Given that you will probably have to use the restroom on the bike as well a one piece is not the ideal. I'm actually even debating if I will race in it for my first IM.

If my sit bones develop an immunity by race time, I might just use bike shorts. Maybe it's just this seat... another story. Thanks for the help. Gonna stick with a split suit for the IM

I think it's a poor choice. There aren't many instances where you would wear padded cycling shorts underneath padded tri shorts.

Seems like you would be sitting on a lot of water after the swim. You may even possibly be effectively raising your seatpost by a noticeable amount...

I agree with you on the use of the term "pad" for most things tri related. I suppose it's better than nothing and running with a cycling specific pad is a mess. Unless you have really skinny legs, a true pad can easily wad up between your thighs while running. Maybe triathlon is a sport of compromises.

Unless you're talking about something over a 70.3, I don't think supplementing the Octane pad is necessary......but you're the one wearing it and making the decision.

At 6'4" you should fit in the large. I am 6'1" and anywhere from 160-168 and the medium is snug.

Just played around with it a little yesterday and now that I am doing short distance stuff for the foreseeable future I think I am going to part with my suit. Down here in Texas we don't have too many wetsuit legal swims and I prefer sleeveless in the water. Suit is fine in the heat but not ideal for short distance non-wetsuit swims.

I'm pretty large in the shoulders and chest with a smaller waist and large legs. Chest is about 44" so I don't think the M is an option. And if I dip into the pizza and beer a few times I tip the scales in the low 200s. I think a large is the way to go.

I don't believe so, if any thing I'd feel the worst pain as my arm was extended and just coming into the catch. It was a non-wetsuit swim so that's all I had on. After the race I looked at the inside of the suit and the seams lined up with the location of the chafe marks. I was hoping to wear it for IMMT, but no chance I'd risk it after that.

Other than the chafing I had, the suit was perfectly fine in the water. I most likely would of experienced even worse chafing if I was wearing a wetsuit. For the first 1,500 meters I felt great in it, wasn't restrictive in anyway. I can't verify in anyway, but I would definitely say it did not slow me down, I felt no drag at the neck or arms.

I had the same severe chaffing issues at Challenge AC with the Octane. Prior to the race I had used the suit with a wetsuit in open water for an hour and had minimal chaffing. Not sure why it was worse without a wetsuit, but the worst feeling I had after Challenge was the chaffing under my arms and back around my shoulders.

I'm good to go for whistler in the octane suit but will keep a pair of shorts and top in my run bag at T2 just incase I'm need to change.

Any one else have chaffing issues with the suit on the swim? I wore mine at challenge AC and nearly had to stop swimming. My neck and both under arms had pretty deep cuts from it. I didn't put body glide on, I've never had to with any other tri suit
I swam Galveston with it zipped up under a wetsuit and forgot body glide. It took two weeks for the chafing to heal, in the same place you mentioned. I still have some scarring. I've since done an olympic and another half without issue - unzipped under a wetsuit with plenty of body glide. I'm not sure what I'll do if wetsuits are prohibited at my next race; perhaps I'll take a chance and swim with it zipped up. I'll be sure to lube up.

I have the Octane and am trying to decide if I should use it for tomorrows race. It's a sprint distance. Any ballpark on it's benefits over a shorter distance race? I'm fairly certain it will be a wetsuit legal race with temps in the mid to upper 70's during the run.

My alternative is a very well fitting two piece LG kit.

Thoughts? I know it's a personal decision, but looking for others thoughts.

As far as fit, I'm 5'7 135 and the suit fits me tight everywhere but the upper arms. There are def some wrinkles.

Wore mine in the Kansas 70.3 and loved it. I am 5'-11" and 153 with a 30" waist and 39" chest. Mine is a medium.

Thanks for this. I'm just very slightly larger than you in every dimension and was wondering how the medium vs small might fit me(6'0.25", 158, 40" chest). Think I will go medium for run comfort.

Yikes just saw your sig. M-I-Z ; )

I swam with mine under my wetsuit at IM CdA two weeks ago, then again yesterday at a sprint in Iowa without the wetsuit. I didn't have any issues either time, not so much as slightly abraded skin anywhere on my body.

One thought would be that you might have a sizing issue. For what it's worth, I'm 6'1" and about 170 and I wear a medium. The suit is actually, and this is surprising to me, a little too big. I'm not as aero as I could be on the bike, and I know it causes drag on the swim. That said, I got it for $135 shipped through Sierra Trading Post, and I'd do it again in a second.

6'0 165 for me and I agree, has to do with the fit. I have a broad chest and shoulders so upper body wise the medium fits tight to the skin. Which I believed is how it should be, for the bike at least.

How are all of you washing this suit? I tried it for the first time on the bike yesterday and loved it. It did feel like I need to lube up better but it was fast and much more comfortable than my old Desoto one piece suit. I don't see any problem running with it and I'll wait until my next sprint race to try it swimming. I'm 6'0 and 167lbs and I got a medium

So back to washing; i threw it in the wash but this morning my wife pulled it out and said that she would hand wash it. Sounds like too much trouble. How are you washing it?

Anyone know where to get a small red and black, period?

The new color scheme for the successor suit is hideous.
