Height & Weight of Triathletes?
Just curious about this one, but what is the "typical" height/weight (i.e. think BMI) of a triathlete? What is your height/weight?

I ask because recent information makes me believe I may need to shed a few pounds of muscle to be more competitive over IM distances.

Thanks,

-Jay

5'10", last year 178lbs this year 156lbs. Last year 12% body fat by those scales you stand on and have fat measured ( I know no reliabilty). I find that I climb better on bike, run much easier, no difference in swim, I also seem to need to be more careful becouse I get injuried easier. My wife claims i was happier fat : ]

I’m 5’9 and right now I weigh exactly 150 as of this morning. I’m about 10 pounds above what I was during my bike racing days. I’d like to lose about 5-8 pounds between now and IM Wisconsin

I am 5'10 or so, and I weigh ~151 lbs. I raced IMFLA at ~145 lbs. For the record, I was not competitive.

I'm 6'0", and currently 165lb. I raced last year at 158 lbs. I think I've added a little muscle mass, but I could still stand to lose a few pounds this year. This compares to 205 lbs when I first got off the couch and started tri's 3 years ago.

5'10'', this morning I was 153 on the gym scale but I float between 152-154 recently. I just got back into real tri training and eating heathy diet after slacking for a little while. I plan to drop about 5lbs to get to 147-148, which is what I was in the middle of last years race season.
No clue on body fat, my scale at home says 13% but it said the same thing when I was 147 (not that it talks). I would like to get my bf measured for real some time.

Well, it looks like I win the lanky award: 6'3" 160-165 lbs. I'm probably around 6-7% body fat, but it's not all it's cracked up to be, since I really have no ballast whatsoever in the water, i.e. I sink like a rock when my lungs aren't full.

5' 9" 158-164 depending on training day. I am around 8-9% body fat :) I can not seem to get below 158 lbs, In College I could not seem to get above 155. My bench press in college was 280, my bench press now is probably 185-200. Hmmm maybe I need to start lifting again. I am much faster than I was in college in all three sports.

Seems like there are a lot of guys around 5' 9"/ 5' 10"

PR for 5K is 16:30

PR for 10K is 34:36

PR for 10 Miler is 56:59

PR for Marathon 3:19 (Was on a 3 hour pace, until oh mile 22 or so)

PR for 1/2 Ironman is 4:45

PR for Ironman is (We shall see). Over the long hall I really slow down. My body must have a lot of fast twitch muscle.

Just wanted to add to the five-niners...

5'9" - 157 this morning. 10lbs less than 1 year ago and the lightest I've been in 15 years. I notice the difference. I'd like to see what low 150's is like.

As for tall guys... I can't speak from experience, but look at Peter Reid vs. Cam Brown. 6" difference there? Craig Walton isn't short, nor is Simon Lessing. Also Michellie Jones vs. Sheila Taormina. There is certainly a wide spectrum of height in the elite ranks. Conrad Stoltz...

5'9.5", 148 lbs. That's four lbs lighter than I was a couple of months ago. By the end of the season I'll be down to 145 or less. That's the same weight that I weighed 25 years ago (I'm 52 now). The big difference is that now I have to really work to keep it there. Back then I could eat what ever I wanted and wouldn't get any heavier.

I'm just a tad shjorter than 6'1". During the off season, I go up to 168 and try to keep below 170. During peak race season last year, I was about 153-155 give or take. Body fat under 10%. I got sick and alotand got injured alot. The year before that I raced at about 163. Body fat about 18%. I was virtually injury free. This season, I am going to stay above 155 if possible. It get hard once the real long training kicks in. I am convinced that going too low in weight can be detrimental to one physically.

Also, I know a few athletes first hand that have eating disorders. They look like they're gonna be fast on race day. The problem is, they deprive themselfs of proper nitrition and strength training and get smoked because they lack the strength and power to go fast.

5'11" and 172 lbs and a 28 year old male. I was at 162 at the beginning of my training but I always seem to gain weight. Any one out there gain weight after they start training? I have been in the middle of my MS weight phase but I'm going to skip that a bit and see if I can add a little grace to my running style.

By the way, I have a theory that when your metabolism slows down when you get older to more sane levels and you're not eating every :30, that is when you get more efficient for the long stuff and can handle the higher mileage and soon those IM lengths.

I'll jump in too.. 5'10.75", morning weight has been concistently at 155 for a couple months. Started training 9 months ago at 165. Was at 185 in college during my "lifting" days, was pretty damn strong too. My body tends towards an ectomorph with some mesomorphic qualities (proportionally bigger chest and thighs).

Also, minimal weight training since started tri-training. Eat a lot, ~3000-3500 calories a day.. BF 6% according to my Tanita.

Glad I'm not the only non-skinny person on the board. 24yr old male, currently 5'11"-ish and between 185-190lbs. Hoping to get down to 180 or so, but no way would I be able to get down to 150 or so and still be healthy. Currently I think my BMI works out to be in the "Overweight" range. I weighed 175 going into college 6 years ago and that was when I feel like I was in my best shape.

Haven't raced a tri yet (first is June 8) - other PRs include : 5k - 23:05, 8k - 42:23, 10k - 1:02, and that's it so far - give me a couple weeks and I'll ad a new 10k and a 1/2 marathon.

Interesting thread - always nice to find out that I am still a "big guy" in some circles.

Peace,

Josh

my prime wieght is 180-185 and i'm 6 foot even. i have been lighter and didn't feel good at that wieght. as far as a 'typical' goes i don't think there is a typical triaathlete or typical athlete of any sort. i knew a guy we called 'the fat' and he could out hump us on most excerises. he was a round guy who looked more like someone who did the yearly 5k instead of some one who won 50m mile ultra marathons.

don't try to loose muscle!!! i know some will argue with me on this but loosing muscle on purpose is bad news. nature knows how much you should have.

6-4, 195. And man, I've had to work to get to 195.

My weight is falling and I'm gonna shoot for 185 for IM Moo. Now I'm really in no-man's land: too big to be fast, and too light to be a Clydesdale.

And yes, size matters.

That does it! Reading the responses to this post confirms my belief that I'm out there racing against a bunch of guys with a 20 -30 pound weight advantage. At 6'0" tall and 177 1/2 lbs. (as of this morning) I'm just too heavy. That weight is actually the lightest I've been in 7 years after spending 10 years lifting.

5'9, 215lbs. Hope to be at or below 200 for IMOO. Feel much slower now than last summer at 200, especially on run. I think 190 would be the lowest I could go. Was always around 190 in HS and College Hockey. I do alright in swim and flat bike courses but hills and run kill me.

I think it's fair to say that most ITU athletes could have second careers as Horse Jockey's. just kidding....kinda.

I'm 6'2" and 166, and hope to be closer to 162 for my "A" races...btw.

I think the "typical" short course guy is 5'10" or less, and 150 or less. Some of the long course guys tend to be a little taller and lankier. I'm not even going to comment on the weight of any females b/c that could just get me in trouble.

Ooooooo the weight poured on this fall when my girlfriend moved in and I started eating like a grown up. I'm just shy of 6'3" and am, at age 34, starting to not be a skinny kid anymore. I raced last year at around 170 and ballooned to over 190 during cyclocross season. Ouch! I'm working my way down under 180 and hope to be back to 170 by CdA... baby steps on the weight loss thing. Now that I am down more than 10 pounds, I am way faster. It's so much easier dragging less weight up the steep hills here in Portland, OR. Maybe also because I put away the rain bike, so I'm a combined 20 pounds lighter. Hmmm...see how easy it is to loose weight?

Offseason: 6'1", 200 lbs

Late season: 185-190 lbs

My diet sucks (or is great, depending on your point of view) during the offseason: I'm not afraid of the occasional In 'n Out Double Double, nor the box of Milk Duds while taking in a movie.

The weight is definitely a liability during high-volume run periods, and I end up with foot/knee/hip issues. For those reasons, I'm seriously considering hanging up the flats and becoming a dedicated time trialist.

5'11", 180lbs...just like when I played college football 25 years ago. Quit lifting weights so I could drop down from the upper 180's a couple of years ago when I started doing triathlons...it was obvious that the muscle I had was worse than useless in a triathlon....I might just as well have had a backpack with extra weight in it. BF about 8% year-round...there is NO off season with nutrition, especially as the years pile up. I'll race as low as the high 170's, but, I don't see myself getting much lighter...so, I'm probably suited more for the shorter courses. It doesn't keep me off of the long courses, but, it's not my ideal spot...actually, my ideal is bike road racing with a sprint finish. I'm working on this aerobic athlete thing, though, and am coming along nicely for an middle aged fellow.

I should add some muscle mass in my legs. I'm too big to be a climber and still don't have all the power I could have in the flats.

I'm 6 feet tall and 173 lbs right now. I hope to be in the 166-168 range by racing season. I was up to 189 on Feb. 1 after a winter with a calf injury kept me from running and was 170 when I did my first ironman in 1999. I figure dropping a little below 170 will be good for my psychological advantage. I'm still way bigger as a triathlete than when I used to race cross-country and track in university (was around 155-158 back then).

I'm 32, a male, 5'11" and 165lbs right now, shooting for 155 over the next few months . . . look at my progression over the years

In High School I wrestled at 138 (old weight classification)

College 148-152 while running 14:XX's and 30:XX's for the 5/10K's

Post College - stress fractures from running too much caused, up to around 180 or so.

Grad school - this is where I picked up multisport, got back down to 155 and was winning some du's. Starting trying to run 80-90 miles a week again and another stress fracture in hip. I managed to reach 220 lbs this time.

Last June - made decision to make a real effort to reach my multisport goals, so I've went from 220 to 165 currently. Some of my friends who don't work out and such think I'm sick or something after watching me lose 55 pounds over the last year. I think they really worry when I tell them I still have 10lbs to go . . .

I'm 6'1" and 195 @ 7% BF. And to think, I used to be considered a small heavyweight rower, now I feel like Gulliver in Liliput. I'm a hot fudge sunday away from 200 and if I slack off for a week or 2 , I'll be 205-210 easily.

It seems to me that for the OD and sprints, good clydesdales can be competitive right up until the run. Ian Thorpe isn't exactly small, and he seems to swim pretty damn fast. On the bike...we're not exactly climbing the alps, so again, size shouldn't play a huge role. The run, however, I feel like somebody is beating me up once I get over the 7 mile mark. Is this a fair assessment??

Fartlekker, I won't let you be the only girl! I'm also 5'7", but about 15 lbs heavier, although with a bit lower bodyfat. The guys are supposed to be single-digits; we can't function properly if we even get close to single digits BF. I'm also 46 and it's getting harder every year to fight my genetics, which say I should be pretty round by now. My husband says he prefers me fit with curves than skinny but not healthy, so I'm lucky. But props to you for doing multisport and getting fit! It's more important how you feel than to try to look like someone ywe're not genetically programmed to look like anyway.

Just to show how different body types can be, I'm also 5'7" and weigh probably a good small child more than Fartlekker, though about the same body fat percentage (maybe a tad bit more). At zero percent bf, I'd still weigh around 135-140 pounds. Too much fat at present, but yeah, lots of muscle. Not so good for running or climbing hills on the bike, but comes in very handy for sparring (which I also do.)

Brettc,

Losing 19lbs is tough, what's your current BF%? I hover around 4-5% depending on how many carbs I ate in the last week, but I have zero room to lose. I'm going to start racing Clydes again this year, until the 165lbs guys start wearing 30lb backpacks ;)

I'm more of a road cyclist than a triathlete, but anyway.. 5'11", 197 lbs, 7% bf. Thank you mesomorph genetics and years of bodybuilding prior to endurance sports. I have a lot of power on the flats and a decent sprint, but the reality of physics hits me like a truck on the sustained climbs. Still its kind of fun to standout somewhat amongst the other Cat 1/2/3's (read: skinny guys). I wish we had a cycling track in my area but oh well.

After years of futility trying to shed upper body mass, I said screw it and decided to just use what I've got, even doing upper body weights twice a week. Consequently, I'm having my best racing season to date. I've heard that upper body mass isn't purely dead weight, in that it (and any latent musculature) helps process lactic acid. Heh maybe there is something to that.. =)

I've never measured the BF - I've got enough problems already ;) without worrying about things like that. But as I sit here at my desk and gently pinch the excess in my waistline - I see that there is about 1.25" of handle there. Yup, looks like about 5% to me. Hehe.

This genetics thing is killing me man. I do a minimum of 3 core workouts a week and I still can't get the waistline to behave. Maybe a diet of 60% carb is a little too much.

Just about 6'0" and I've gone from 293lbs 17 months ago to a slimmed down ~185lbs at this point and am looking at peaking around 170-172 in time for my build up races during July & September and finally 168 or so for my 1/2 Ironman in late September.

I'm also hoping to sustain right around 170 when I pick up club cycling after the season. I want to join a local team or at least work out with one during the winter season to really put some miles into the legs.

Hey Fartlekker - are you sure you have your body fat % right? What are you using to measure it? I'm 5'8" and 168 (working my way *slowly* down to 150 - 155, I hope). I just had my body fat measured 4 weeks ago with calipers from a respectable fitness testing place. I measured at 30%. You're 30 lbs less than I am, so I can't believe we're at the same body fat %. If you're using a tanita scale or something like that, you might want to get it tested with calipers. Not that it's a big deal, but I like having something other than pure weight to see my progress.

Yeah, I'm using one of the scales, which I know isn't extrememly accurate (though it is precise - I'm always between 29 and 31), but I use it more for comparison than for an accurate number. I suspect that there may be a problem with the equation it's using since the electricity travels mainly in your lower body and that is by far where all my fat is stored. I know that selecting that I am a female on the scale takes some of that into account, but probably not enough, in my case.

Regardless, I might be closer to 25% than I think, but nowhere near single digits. :) I'm glad to see I'm not the only 30% out here, though..

I have to say I was so glad when I read your post. I was starting to hyperventilate after seeing so many 7 and 8% body fat on the guys!! :) Actually it's great to see so many different body types in tri. I'm female, relatively slow and definitely have a few lbs to lose, but I'm not treated any differently than the next racer (as long as I stay to the right on the bike course!! :) ). Of course there are exceptions to this, but generally it's true and makes me love tris even more. Thanks for posting everyone.

Thanks Pooks.

Just followed a nice healthy diet and started working out. You'd be amazed if you just followed the advice you were told as a kid:

1 - Eat your veggies first
2 - Don't eat all the tortilla chips (out at Mexican restaurants)
3 - Don't eat that you'll spoil your dinner
4 - Have some carrots or some water and if you are still hungry you can have some ice cream (late night snacking)
5 - Take your vitamins
6 - Get outside and play/run/skip/hop/jump/ride/swim - damn near anything

But the main goal is to just put one foot in front of the other and keep doing that and it'll get easier and easier and faster and faster and voila - you are a Triathlete :)

Now I run an easy 7:30 pace on my runs, on the bike I climb better, swimming has been a little more endurance but just a little faster. Despite best intentions I did lose some power when I lost my guns -- but I'll take the tradeoff in better health and faster times.

Moving in the right direction and slowly closing the gap each year. 2011 was the fastest year. 12 guys broke 4:30 on the bike and the top 3 guys went faster than Frederik Van Lierde. (in regards to his winning time of 8:12:30 this year) This year only 6 guys broke 4:30 and it was a tougher run IMO for the pro men. The women's race had some cloud cover but I didn't get any cloud cover until the last 3-4 miles.

Ironman World Championships results:
2011: 23rd pro (3rd American)
-Time: 8:43:51 (40mins behind winner)

2012: 20th pro (4th American)
-Time: 8:50:21 (31mins behind winner)

2013: 18th pro (3rd American)

I weighed 196 lbs yesterday. That's the lowest I've been since my teens. But that had more to do with my morning run that became a 13.2 miler without support / fluids. Today 202.

I am still trying to figure out if 6'3" and 200 lbs folks can swim in a Large TYR Torque swimskin comfortably. I can't quite believe the TYR sizing chart for us big folks.... Pretty much everything else I've used XL. But the TYR sizing says 215lbs+ and for XL.

I'm always working on staying around 135, but it's an effort to both train and keep the weight on.
I think I need to bring the bodyweight exercises back in. Maybe I can put a couple pounds back on by the end of the year.

5' 9 and a half " - the half is very important to me.

Race weight - 152 lbs
Xmas weight - 164 lbs

Body fat in race season - approx 10% according to those scales that measure it through your feet
Body fat at xmas - 13%, primarily turkey grease and toblerone

My strength is running. I have skinny chicken legs and a (by slowtwitch standards) fairly pathetic FTP in the mid two hundreds.

5'4" ~141 lbs right now

I was as low as 135 lbs last winter/spring but that was after some drastic dieting. I really think that the lost muscle mass in my legs dropped my cycling performance a little bit.

Since then I've brought my FTP up about 10 watts to the highest it's ever been while only gaining 3 to 4 lbs of muscle (and 1 or 2 lbs of fat :P)

I also think that my running performance dropped a little bit because of the weight gain but not as much as cycling improved.

As a runner, prior to getting into tri in '91, I tended to hover around 150.

When I was actually training for / racing triathlons my best performances were around 155 lbs.

Once I started coaching soccer 3 seasons of the year, I could never maintain that and was lucky to get below 165 for a few summer tri's each year.

Now that I'm no longer coaching and have a renewed emphasis on running, I've been able to get as low as 148 when not dealing with typical life conflicts or injuries, but really would like to get below 145.

Body comp test Saturday, last test was spring 2011 same weight (and height) 181lbs lean mass but I was lifting the and haven't much this year. Results from this test will determine what I'm comfortable getting down to for next season, tentatively that is 190ish. We'll see how I do not losing muscle and running more than 160 miles all year (which includes 2 HIM) before I decide if i want to cut more.

Almost the same size as you - 6' 2.75" and 195, lifetime swimmer/surfer so big shoulders and chest/lats. I race at around 190-ish for 70.3's. At 58 years old it's a lot tougher dropping those last 5 pounds. Anyway, I use a TYR Torque Elite size L and it fits great. I was a little skeptical about the sizing but it's worked out great, I even wear it over my tri suit with no problems.

That chart rocks, thanks for taking the time to prepare it.

As I'm about to do my second 140.6, I'm:
  • 41 years old
  • male
  • 5'10"
  • 141 lbs. [Edit: dropped to 139 lbs. for my December '13 race]
I've generally been between 160 and 175 lbs the past 10 years, during which time I've done mostly Olympic and 70.3 races. But this year I clamped down on diet, used the Barry P running plan, prayed a lot, and dropped almost 30 lbs. It will be interesting to see how the weight reduction helps my run (and possibly hurts my bike?). I generally consider myself a cyclist more than a runner. I'm a terrible swimmer.

[Follow up: Dropping 29 lbs. saved me 17 minutes on my 140.6 run compared to Dec. '12 on the same course. Though in '12 there was no wind and in '13 there were MASSIVE winds -- 29mph steady winds and 37mph gusts according to data on wunderground.com -- for the last 2 hours of the run.]

I'm fairly fast on the bike, as long as its flat. In 2013, I was getting re-passed on some uphills by skinny / little guys. I'd re-motor past them when it leveled out, but I noticed.

In addition, I'm hoping my knee will be happier at 175 than it is at 185. I keep my winter weight high on purpose as my metabolism tends to consume muscle when I diet.

Finally - the companies that send me pics from the events always manage to capture perfectly the "middle-aged guy in reasonable shape with a beer gut" look that prevents me from ever buying said images. And when I'm tightening my running shoes in T2, I'm convinced that my belly roll folding over my shorts is costing me 3-5 seconds.

Interesting... my height on the line puts weight at 162 lbs roughly... that was the number I picked out of the air this winter as a potential race weight this fall (currently at 170lbs). Would imply that this would be a good start but not light enough if I want weight to actually be an advantage.

Soccer guys are usually very good distance runners, as that's what the game requires with a good balance of explosive speed.... unless your a goaltender.

You'll probably always carry some bulk, but i bet 180 is very possible, yet still not terribly light. You 5k PR would probably drop to 18:30, and 1/2 mary time to about 1:26 and a 3:05-3:10 would be possible if you really trained for it.

That is the plan. I think 180 would be a good weight, but like you said not light at all. I played on the field and not in goal. I think it is very possible to be competitive locally/regionally at that weight. Thanks for the encouragement.

Male, 27
6'2"
167lbs
7.2% body fat (supposedly)

Olympics only thus far. PR 2:23:xx. Swims have always been around 30mins but looking to shatter that at my next race. Best 40k bike thus far 1:01:xx. Not a fast runner by any stretch.

im a 42 yr male 5'10.5" 210 lbs 9 percent body fat. compete in mostly 70.3 and reg for my first full this year. i usually finish at best in the middle of my age group or slightly lower. i have too much muscle to carry to place higher although thats a good balance for what i want.

Big boned, too much muscle, and body fat % that needs to improve.... 6'0", 42 yr old male who 'raced' IMFL at 217 lbs last year. I should add than I am a sucky sucky swimmer.
Swim: 1:40
Bike: 5:39
'Run': 7ish hours...
total time of 14:55 with mellow transitions and survival mode on the run (overcooked the bike a bit).

I've run a 4:06 standalone marathon (and 1:54 half) when I got down to 180lbs 5 years ago, and running was MUCH easier than now, but I had no power on the bike (avg 18 mph on long rides vs 20-21 mph now).

I finished Ironman St George in 2012 in 16+ hrs at 208 lbs. Ideal IM race weight for me is right around 200 lbs (for a flat course like IMFL, more like 190 lbs for hilly).

56 yo male
Weight today = 155.6lbs
2014 Goal Wt = 150 lbs

Long course triathlon focus. Came from a running background (weighed about 146 lbs in my 20s) with 14:50 5K / 1:08:16 1/2M PRs back then. That speed is long gone...easier to go long than fast now.

You said that 6 months ago. Probably wasn't funny enough to repeat.

6'2"
180-190 (ill be 175 by the time I race)

I'm relatively new, did 4 last year, mostly sprints and one Olympic. Bigger year this year with a total of 8 with one 70.3.

My best sprint last year was 1h16m and the one Olympic was 2h35m. Based on the early times this year I should dust these numbers. I went sub 20 in a 5k for the first time and sub 41 in a 10k. I also have a much faster bike and am in the midst of fixing my swim to drop from 2m per 100m to about 1m45s.

Edit: Posted to a zombie eh? My bad.

5'9.5'', 130lbs. But it's not so great. I can be almost spinning out in my 53 x 11 on downhills and people will coast past me... :(

No clue on body fat %

Could comfortably race at 140lbs given I put in hard sessions and start cutting.

let me add to it then, 6'5" 180lbs I think this is a good weight for me for racing. 5K 19.02 and running 6:30s off the bike in sprints on 0 - 10 miles a week. once I am pain free I'm going to do this the right way. but the damage might already have been done.
