The Rise Of Eye Of The Tiger Music In Triathlons
Quote | Reply
The next tri race I do, I've decided that, when and if I hear the "Eye Of The Tiger," song again, before a triathlon race, I'm just getting back into my car, and going home.

There's just no point in going on, after being forced to listen to the group "Survivor" before anything competitive, after high school, or junior high, at least. I thought that shit ended back then. But apparently it has not.

Its an assault on whatever dignity I have as an adult human being, if any anyway, to endure such madness, because not only is it played once, it's played throughout the race. "Rocky Music" must be the national anthem of Triathlon Racing. Yet, for as many intelligent people involved in this sport, we play goon music. And what simpletons get pumped up by this retarded music? "Uhhhh, I was really feeling, tired, until that Rocky Music fired up, then everything sort of came together: the pictures of Rocky Balboa getting his ass kicked, and running up the Philly capitol, when he swallowed all of those eggs, the Adrian thing, his triumphant victory, and so on, oh....man, now I'm ready to hammer!"

And who, or which race director, keeps the Survivor CD? Or would admit to it? I bet he throws that son of a bitch away right after the race, for fear, that if he left it in his or her car, or accidentally brought it home, his friends might see it, and laugh at him.

And what an ordeal it must be to have forgotten to bring the Eye of the Tiger song, before the race:

"Uh, Gary. I just told everybody to come check in, get a bike rack, and get their timers on and so on. Where's the Rocky Music cd?"

"Shit, I forgot it."

"You forgot Eye Of the Tiger? How could you?"

"Yeah."

"Gary, we can't have the race until we fire up Eye of The Tiger."

"Well, I threw it away last year."

"I'll go run to Wal-mart real quick, and get that Survivor CD. Be right back."

"We don't have time. Give me the microphone, for a minute."

Microphone: "Okay, can I have everybody's attention. This includes you peole swimming out in the lake. Listen up. We lost the Eye Of The Tiger song, does anybody out there, happen, by chance have it, listening to it in their cars? And, listen, in case you do, Gary and I will turn our backs, so as not to see who actually owns that, and you can leave it at the table. Thanks."

Note to myself: remember to leave the Survivor collection inside the house during next year's IMCDA. . .

Thanks, booth!

I know people who play that song to get fired up to WATCH football on TV.

I did like the song I heard at a criterium one time "Sunday Bloody Sunday" by U2.

If you can't get fired up listening to Conquest (Rocky II) and War (IV) and Training Anthem (IV), then you can't get fired up.

Yeah ... I own the CD's. =) I agree EOT has run its course.

It is a pox on the modern race scene.

I hereby move that we replace Eye of The Tiger with Boom! by POD.

I can't believe you are dogging Eye of the Tiger...

I can't get enough of that song...or the Starbucks commercial spin-off either.

My high school hockey team used that as a warm-up song and I've never so many people get so riled up, most sarcastically/mockingly enjoying the song, before an event...but I still loved it...every single moment of it. Maybe b/c I was in grade school when the actual movie came out and discovered it about 10 years later than everyone else...but still.

Come on...sing a little with me...."Risin' up, back on the streets...took my time, took my chances...went the distance now I'm back on the top..."

Not even a little? ....come on people, who's with me here?

You and TT, I'm serious here, you guys need to delete your posts.

Now, I'm probably not as fast as you two, but I damn sure know, if its any consolation, you may beat my ass badly in a race, should we ever be in the same race, probably by a huge amount, but, as I see you two, going out for your warm down run, while I'm just starting my run, I will have the small comfort of knowing that I am freaking light years ahead of you two guys in music taste.

Light years.

I think that it really depends on the race and who is in control of the music. I know at the Trisport races in Ontario that Kevin MacKinnon the race announcer brings his own CD's to the events and has a great range of techno, house, ambient and world music along with some schloky classics that he plays. It's usually a great mix. At IMC they use a local club DJ, and he's good. A great mix of stuff. He introduced me to one of my all time fav pieces of music - "Swamp Thing", by The Grid - when I was working with Steve King a few years ago.

Other races I have been to seem to be stuck in a particular decade( yikes, the 70's) - perhaps the choice of the RD. Who knows?

I can't believe you don't love this stuff....seriously Booth, I have great taste in music....I consider myself well versed in good music...

but when it comes to going mentally bizerk before a race...very few songs will do it for me like a little Eye of the Tiger...

Just for those curious or out of the know...

Eye Of The Tiger
Survivor

Risin' up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all with the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds, still we take to the street
For the kill with the will to survive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all with the eye of the tiger

Risin' up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all with the eye of the tiger

The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger

If you do a search on PubMed, you will find a study that prooves, without question, that Eye of the Tiger gets you 40% more pumped before a race than those who listened to no music at all, and 15% more pumped than any Linkin Park song.

Personally, I can't get enough of the Tiger!

John... John, John, John... John, John, John... John, John, Joooohhhhn!!!

Look what Rocky songs I listed. Listen to them. Come back with a changed opinion and apologize (<-- joke). The songs I listed were fast-paced instrumental "modern versions of classical music" type training anthems.

I listened to EotT back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-repeated infinity while I jumped rope, played basketball, baseball, karate, heavy bag, etc while I was in 7th grade. I had my fill of the song. But, Rocky music in general ... especially the training anthems and fight instrumental music is very heart-thumping. It's almost like "macho-techno" (oxymoron?).

Plus, I like the song "No easy Way Out" but I only let my close friends know that.

Triathlon theme song should be that "Let the Bodies Hit the Floor ..." song. ... or Megadeath's "Crush 'Em" ... or Pantera's "Cemetary Gates" ... or No Doubt's "I'm Just a Girl" ... wait, how'd that last one slip in there?

---------------------------

FWIW, I dount you're slower than I am. But, if you want the title of "slowtwitch's slowest" it can be yours for a very, very, very low price.

Rocky does not run up the steps of the Philadelphia Capitol; there is no such thing. He is running up the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum. True story: he donated a statue of himself as Rocky to the Museum and they initially tried to refuse it. I am not sure why; the Museum itself has plenty of garbage in it. Most of the second floor was devoted to modern "art", like a circle of rocks on the floor, the last time I was there. The statue was eventually moved to the Spectrum, I think, with a great deal of difficulty.

It's actually a pretty good length run from South Philly where he is supposed to live to the Art Museum and back. The Art Museum steps themselves, however, are not very hard because they are neither steep nor that many, but it is kind of fun to run up them and the view is great from the top.

True true. A few years back, I was in Philly on a 'business trip' (to play a gig at a big convention), and I went for a run along the river there, out towards Manayunk and back. On the way back, of course I *had* to run up the steps . . . there were a few kids hanging out at the bottom of the steps, and as I ran up, they started chanting; 'Rock-Y!, Rock-Y!'

Was great for a laugh, and I can say I've done it. FWIW, the statue was still there then.

hey, if you want to go real heavy for triathlon theme songs, you could go with: "More Human than Human" - White Zombie, "Mouth for War" - Pantera, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" - Metallica, "Breathe" - Prodigy, "Megalomanic" - KMFDM, "War Ensemble" - Slayer, "Hey Man, Nice Shot" - Filter, "Eraser" - Nine Inch Nails, "Liberate" - Disturbed

however if i listened to this before an IM, i'd definitely DNF after blowing up in the swim before i hit the first buoy.

Seriously, I've found that the music at triathlons is generally excellent--there's a lot of stuff I've never really heard before that's really cool. I wish some guy who does the music for triathlons would package it up and sell it as a cd.

During my last tri of the year, we rode past the ranch of one of the guys from Air Supply, which a so-called friend had informed me of a few weeks earlier while scouting the route. As I neared the ranch I couldn't help but think "I'm all out love, I'm so lost without you....", my HR dropped 20 beats and I beileve three seniors on mountain bikes passed me.

Nothing to do with Survivor, but someone already beat me to the punch with "BOOTH...BOOTH BOOTH BOOTH!!

Our local tri guys have a great cd that the play, the haunting West Wing rendition of Hallulah is awesome.

OK, since we are discussing music at races in another thread, I'm bumping Boothrand's "Eye of the Tiger Thread" from 2004! I can't believe this shit is still going on in in 2012. Are they also going to bring Stallone out of retirement and enter him in the Clydesdale division and give him a Kona slot? Or is he banned by WADA?

Edit: For some reason, I thought that Boothrand had started this thread!

You may be dating yourself a bit here, or maybe not a big music buyer in the last few years, but...

I live in a Third World country, in the jungle, and via cell phone signal can purchase and legally download that particular song in less than 60 seconds. But I wouldn't get to read any of their worthless liner notes. So here you go:

Wow...I thought this was just posted as it still applies. Back in '04 I could still dunk and was damn good at basketball and then my joints caught up with me. Regardless, it still takes a little "Closer" ( http://vimeo.com/3554226 ) to get me pumped for a race when it is still dark out as I drive to the race.

You guys need to come to Dallas. Dallas Athletes Racing has live bands at many of their triathlons. You never know what you will hear, but it's a totally different vibe than a large PA system pumping out the usual songs.

I have to admit one of my favorite parts of race day is driving to the race, alone, usually when it's dark or as the sun is just coming up and there isn't a soul on the street, and absolutely blasting some very "pumped up" music. Closer is a good one, and depending if I need an "angry" or "happy" pump up that day, I've also used Rage Against The Machine and Foster The People, respectively =).

Long Chile was a silly place.

It's not annoying, but the most disturbing music at a tri has to be at Musselman when they play bagpipes as the starters wade into the water. It's cool, but it also seems very dismal, like a funeral dirge as everyone marches off to their deaths in the water.

Agreed about the bagpipe music....however, my experience was from being in the Armed Forces and having the pipe band playing every morning at 6 am right outside the window of my room for an entire year. All I can think of is having to go out on parade....no fun.

I know this is a old thread, but its still so funny !

... can just imagine the music starting in transition and then you can spot all the seasoned veterens by the sudden nauseated grimacing and cringing. Reactions made much worse when to their disgust all the noobies next to them get all amped up and smiley about it

one time there was a duathlon and they played really great build up music right up to the start ...then as soon as the gun went off they suddenly cut to Chariots of Fire... it was funny to be sprinting around the track to slow motion music .... it was so unexpected and felt like someone suddenly slammed the brakes on ... kind of like running in quicksand but it was so cheesy had to smile

...kind of like if they were to play the BAYWATCH theme on a running swim start at a tri

This thread just doubled it's views in 12 hour than what it received in 2004. Forum must have gotten a bit bigger, or we're more interested in this critical issue with respect to the place of Rocky music in the world of triathlon. Just wondering if this music should be banned by WADA at this point or not? Clearly Stallone was not competing in the drug free category and the mere association of endurance sport with this music is troubling (optional pink font).

By the way.....in 2004 when Boothrand made the post, the Race Director would have had to ask athletes to go back to their cars so that someone could get the critical Eye of the Tiger CD without which the race cannot happen....today, you'd just download it over Verizon 4G to somemone's Samsung Galaxy or iPhone.

Ultratriguy, can you at least get Felix at Challenge to ban it?

I was going to tell you that was inaccurate, that it was only there for the movie Rocky III, and it was at the Spectrum. We used to always meet people at the Rocky Statue, which was a poor choice, since EVERYONE met their friends at the Rocky Statue. I just looked it up to see where it went after they closed the Spectrum.

Wouldn't you know it, they actually did take the statue back to the Art Museum in 2006. I can't believe I didn't know that. It has been a few years since I've been in Philly, something I need to rectify soon.

I have always wondered what it's like to have an office with a view of the steps. How many tourists per day run up and bounce around with their arms in the air? (I know I did it.) I would love to see a website of videos called "rocky steps FAIL" where people either trip, or can't run all the way up, or run into each other.

I have a video of one of my jackass friends doing it. It wasn't a fail or anything, just a 30 year old over weight dude sprinting up the steps. I had hoped to get something epic on the video (like him stiff arming a kid on the way up or something) but no luck.

I forget the last time I was in Philly, but it must have been after 2006. What I was surprised by is the size of the statue. In the movie, it seems enormous, but out there on the grounds, it is almost life sized.

I get to play a lot of music at events including triathlons but have only played Eye of the Tiger once. That was in Kona by request. I like the song but it seems a little cliche.

It gets me pumped......REAL pumped and anxious when the blasting music drowns out the last minute announcements relegating them to the audio clarity of an adult in a Charlie Brown special......... I think there is a link to medical emergencies in the swim.

If you were to actually retrace Rocky's steps [so to speak] from the Rocky II video [for example] your route would be

Rocky II
Start: 2313 S. Lambert Street http://www.themoviemap.com/...ns/rr/rocky-ii-1979/
Conrail Tracks w/SEPTA Bridge Kensington http://www.citypaper.net/...seen-in-Rocky-2.html
Italian Market
Bridge at B St. & Tusculum [back in Kensington]
Kelly Drive
Chestnut Street
Independence Mall
Logan Circle
Parkway
Art Museum

It would be about 25-30 miles

That's awesome. It looks like you actually did the map yourself, since I can't click through that link and get past your profile. Set it for "public." I would love to put up a link to that.

I lived in Philadelphia for a couple of years. I never knew every one of those spots, but knew enough to know that was a very very long run. I couldn't drive down by Boathouse Row without looking for someone running while pulling an old man on a bike.

Yes it is, I can see it now.

Now I have this crazy idea about recreating the run, just to do it. I wonder if anyone has.

If someone drew up a route that included all the shots they used, but not necessarily in order, you might have an interesting novelty run. Philly already has a big marathon, and the 10 mile Broad St run. Why not a Rocky recreation? It would probably have the same reaction as the first 5 boroughs NYC marathon. But it could become a pretty cool thing. Except for the haters. But haters are always gonna hate, yo.

Now you guys are planning an entire event based on Eye of the Tiger/Rocky.

Will this be WADA sanctioned, or is there a "full doped Stallone division"?

Will there be fundraising for any charities?

No. We're looking STRICTLY at Rocky & Rocky II; "Eye of the Tiger" was Rocky III

It's actually a pretty good length run from South Philly where he is supposed to live to the Art Museum and back. The Art Museum steps themselves, however, are not very hard because they are neither steep nor that many, but it is kind of fun to run up them and the view is great from the top.

But, since I heard the song on the radio this morning, all three have happened. Somehow it's not surprising that Dev is still here. The song was still great to here; it reminded me of listening to it on the way to swim practice in the summer of 1982 or so.

Never do a marathon in Mexico!

I was in Villahermosa with my wife on vacation as a stop on a bus tour. There was a marathon going on and we were right by the finish line. Eye of the Tiger was played on REPEAT. In the half hour or so we sat there it was all Eye of the Tiger all the time. No other songs.

Swim - Bike - Run the rest is just clothing changes.

I think U2's "It's a Beautiful Day" is sliding into the top spot for being overplayed. It was playing as I crossed the line at my 1st IM...not hear I could hear it over my yelling... but it was in the video after and I remembered it after I stopped moving. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I could hear Mike Reilly either.

And there it was again at a local 5k before the start. Not a bad thing... whenever I hear the song now, I can think about my first IM finish. Man... I want the go run that last 5k again... the best pain I've ever felt.

I supply the music to the many events that I Race Announce at, and I can assure you that "Eye of the Tiger" is NOT in the mix.

I had a woman come up to me at a race this past summer and ask me about the music. She said - "this is the best music mix I have ever heard at a triathlon!"

The mix is a mixture of hip-hop, rap, trance, EDM, with some 1980's & 90's under-ground favourites of mine thrown in( like Kraftwerk's, "Tour de France")

Since this thread started in March of 2004, I guess it took 10 years to converge on us being whiny bitches. Sometimes it takes the collective of ST to converge towards the general consensus on a topic. We're still debating seats being too high 10 years later....Andy Coggan came on here around 9 years ago and said that even a 1 inch variance on the saddle being too low has zero impact on power output...I tested that and he is correct...I even tried 5 cm lower and was able to sustain similar power....only problem is compression of hip angle!!!

This thread is hilarious, but I just have to respond to this one. A few months ago I did a trail race where the last few miles were going down a dirt road into town. The farms and ranches were widely spaced, and at the edge of the road in front of a farm house at the top of a small hill was a girl about 10-12 years old with a stereo set up. I heard "Eye of the Tiger" playing as the man ahead of me ran past her. Then she looked at me, stopped the song, and put on "Chariots of Fire". I laughed and complimented her taste in music. This girl was spending her Saturday DJ'ing for each runner that went by. She was awesome.

Yeah, that survivor song is well past its best by date.

given that it's so old I though you may have been talking about Katie Perry's song with 'eye of the tiger' in the words. At least hers is bubbly and fresh to listen to in the morning before a race start. Survivor, not so much.

I get to play a lot of music at events including triathlons but have only played Eye of the Tiger once. That was in Kona by request. I like the song but it seems a little cliche.

I see this is an old thread . . but a good one! Glad that it has been bumped up!

Thank you Dave for your Music Choice restraint! :-)

FWIW - the song in question here is NOT on my Race/Event Play List!

While we are on the subject of play lists - When Announcing at a race/event and it's my responsibility to supply the music (sometimes there is a DJ who does this - but that is rare) mine is one that I have been building up over the years and I have a great range of beat heavy stuff that spans mixed musical genres - from hip-hop, trance, EDM, reggae, dance-hall, Indy, world music, with the occasional Top-40 favorite thrown in. When look out and see people spontaneously moving to the beat, nodding their heads or even spontaneously dancing, I know I'm doing OK!

Before races, up to an hour before the gun, I have started to play some chill, ambient grooves, with a bit of a beat, when people are just showing up, and then I start in more with the upbeat stuff about an hour to 45 minutes out! Blasting "Back in Black" at 6am in the dark, just does not seem like the right vibe for me! :-)

It's funny when you think about it that way!

Even the way we ACCESS and listen to music has totally changed in those 18 years! Even just in the last two years. BEFORE the pandemic, I was still in the having hard-copy MP3 files stored as my way of accessing Music Lists that I would play at Races/Events that I was Announcing at. In the ensuing 2 years, everything went into the Cloud be it iTunes or Spotify - the two big services - so all those Mp3 files I had, while not useless, only worked now if they were part of the iTunes ecosystem! Anything that I had burned, or copied from CD's or elsewhere - gone!

I didn't think of the Eye of the Tiger song too much, but it is now for me a symbol of the "good ol' days" of racing and is part of my FTP test play list! Early in my tri racing, at my first Wildflower, someone was blasting it from their car parked on the side of the first climb out from the lake. I get goose bumps when thinking about that moment: young and carefree, rising sun, out of the saddle hammering into the awesome world of triathlon:)

I think it's a LAW that "New York, New York" must be played before any sporting event in NYC, much like "Eye Of The Tiger" or "Gonna Fly Now" must be played in Philly, or Alan Parsons's "Sirius" must be played in Chicago

At least NYC and CHI only play it once, then move on, whereas we must've heard all that Rocky crap [including the bell] a hundred times during the World Series - and for that, I sincerely apologize

I have an over 16 hour play-list of select music that I play when I am Announcing. I typically just put it on shuffle and let it go, for however long I am on the mic at a Race/Event.

. . but I don't think I have one Coldplay tune . . . . wait I just remembered I do have the Coldplay-Chainsmokers collaboration, "Something Just Like This" in there somewhere! Does that count/not-count?

Ok, at first I read this part of the post in an angry sort of way - like a Klingon would - but then I thought 'Who the fuck knows battle quotes in Klingon?'

So I re-read it in Jim Parson's voice, and it's fucking hilarious

Ha! If Jim Parson's Sheldon Cooper character were to say something like the above, it would be funny and right on character! Anyone else who responds like that here on ST, I assume they are troubled, maybe angry and feel sorry for them.

Might be fun to start a new thread on what folks would like to hear at triathlon events.

I always thought we should have the Game of Thrones theme blaring as we enter an Ironman swim. Good music as we enter the swim "battle" :-)

while you're at it, have everyone shout "Heghlu'meH QaQ jajvam" ("It is a good day to die" in Klingon)

Comedy gold right here...dude quoting klingon, who apparently even knows how to spell it, and you're the one with the issue?

to your original post, humor or not - got so tired of a prior dj insisting that eye of the tiger be played multiple times, he was dismissed. luckily, our timer, fastracktiming , needed no such instruction. good stuff hereTriingtotrain!

No problems with the Klingon. I highlighted what surprised me. I am not sure why this person responded to my post. I think if they just did the Klingon and left out the rest, it would have been fine

That's a great name for an epic metal tune!

I think that triathletes need more death metal to get them to clear the transition before the race. Or to get them into the water!
Who can't resist a few rounds of Hammer Smashed Face before they are off to the races!

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

Circling back around ... "Might be fun to start a new thread on what folks would like to hear at triathlon events."

I've done so many events in Philly that it would be weird to start a race without "Eye Of The Tiger" or "Gonna Fly Now" or any other Rocky music playing; so, I'm kinda stuck with it

Would I prefer something else? Maybe, but I dunno what, really

Thanks."

To be fair, this thread was started more than 18 years ago, and I don't think anyone has actually gone back to read Post #1 in about 16 of those years - I know *I* haven't

Understood, but according to chat:

The use of the word "retarded" as a term for people with intellectual disabilities has been considered inappropriate and offensive for several decades. In the 1960s and 1970s, people with intellectual disabilities and their advocates began to speak out against the use of the word "retarded" due to its derogatory and stigmatizing connotations.

As a result of these efforts, many countries, including the United States, passed legislation in the 1990s to replace the term "mental retardation" with "intellectual disability" in official documents and communication. This change reflected a broader shift in attitudes towards disability and the recognition of the dignity and humanity of people with intellectual disabilities.

Today, the use of the word "retarded" is generally considered offensive and derogatory, and it is no longer considered acceptable in polite society. Instead, people are encouraged to use respectful and inclusive language that reflects the dignity and humanity of all individuals, including those with intellectual disabilities.

I'm not arguing that - I just think no one ever realized that word was in the thread at all

The poster is long gone, so there's no way get that remediated

****

Did anyone besides me ever realize that the Rocky series play out like Flowers for Algernon? Before Rocky met Apollo, he was stupid, but the more time he spent with Apollo, he got smarter. When Apollo was killed by Drago in Rocky IV, he went back to being stupid

In Rocky Balboa, after Adrian passed, he somehow became wiser again?

"

So...I did The Woodlands Half Marathon a little over a week ago. The "Eye of the Tiger" is one of my favorite songs to hear as I am running through an aid station on down the finish line shoot but I didn't hear it at this event. The DJ must have got ear of this thread and put it away. I heard a song on the course as I came through the 8 mile aid station that got me just as excited. Cake's "Going the Distance" was playing. I graduated from high school in the 90's so this is a something from my generation and I have often got it stuck in my head on training days and in races. I had never heard it at any event through so after hitting a 10K PR and then passing a half dozen people between the 10K and 8 mile markers It was like they were playing the song just for me. Some one I actually knew was a volunteer at the 9 mile aid station and just happened to be standing the spot in the line that I needed the person that I got my Gatorade cup to be so I again was on a high to get my cup from someone that I know during a races with thousands of participants and hundreds of volunteers. That was also a first. When I came through the 10-mile marker under 1 hours for my first time (I failed to do in to two open 10 mile races over the past year and failed to do that in another half marathon recently) I felt unstoppable. So I had a great race, but only remember one other some from the event. They were playing BTS's Dynamite and I was leaving. This is NOT a song of my generation, but it is a song of the generation of my children and my teenage daughter is really big into BTS. So...for me songs are way to connect with a time, a person, or a feeling. If that feeling is one of being strong, fit, or fast it can give you a big boost at a time you needed in in a race. If the song is overdone and leaves with an empty feeling then no harm done. It it leaves you with a negative feeling then that is one more thing that you have to learn to be flexible with and adjust to on race day.

That's a good one. It always reminds me of this anime from MTV's Liquid Television

"For Those About To Rock" "Highway To Hell" - AC/DC
"Born To Run" - Bruce [they probably play this in North Jersey as much as "Eye Of The Tiger" or anything else Rocky in Philly]
"Run For The Hills" - Maiden [just don't listen too closely to the lyrics]
"You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" - The Offspring [see above]
"Road To Nowhere" - Talking Heads

If they really want to get eclectic ... "Adidas In Heat" - Adrian Belew
The thrill of victory, the agony of my feet

They could play "Photograph" [by either Def Lep OR Ringo Starr; "Kodachrome" by Paul Simon is lovely, but SOOOOO dated in the 21st Century] on a loop at the spot where the race photogs are

When I'm running long, I also hear the bridge to "All My Life" by Foo Fighters in my head

Done, done and I'm on to the next one
