Swim Pictures from Alcatraz
Given my touristic participation in Alcatraz, I carried a camera with me during the swim and took a few pictures. I was happy to: 1. document the great swim, 2. document the tremendous change in conditions in no more than 15 minutes.

Enjoy the pictures, I absolutely treasure them.

That's awesome. It's like the helmet cam of triathlon swimming.

That has to be one of the best swims in triathlon.

Those are superb. They really give a feeling of what that swim is like.

When that fog swarmed in I thought "...how's anyone gonna sight off anything now?" Glad you made it.

Wow. Simply... wow.

These photos capture the chaos and anxiety of the event. Its somewhat ironic the photos are so large on my browser that I have to slde around to view them. That is perfect. It is like the swim itself, where you have only a small view of the entire picture at any given time- exactly like the experience.

When I was approaching the swim finish I was reminded of Robert Capa's D-Day famous photos: How they were confused and chaotic. There was a panicky look to them.

Your photos capture the look and the feel of the event. You really did a great job with these. Thank you for posting them.

Those are awesome shots, man....if you've never done the event, this set of pictures gives you a glimpse as to what it's like, sans the cold water.

Nicely done!

Cool pics.

I am doing Kona this year kinda like you - "touristicly" (I am a lottery winner). Since I don't care about extra minutes/weight etc here & there, I am also planning to take dispo cameras with me on the course. I plan to use a whole camera on each of the three legs. I just hope I don't need one with a flash for the last leg haha.

Again, great pictures & thanks for posting them!

I was joking with people that the sun was shining when I jumped into the water, and when I surfaced the fog had rolled in.

Sighting was hard. I did, however, see a pack off to my right and another off to my left. I thought of the sandwich theorem from calculus, and just swam between them.

The big telecommunications tower was obscured, but I could see the gold dome I was told about. That helped as well.

Great pics! My SF pics are here:

Click on "San Francisco" to the right.

Althought there are little of the race, and more tourist shots than anything.

Best race pics ever on Slowtwitch. Just incredible. You should submit these to the Triathlon mags for award consideration. Really!

By the way, is anyone else confused by the discrepancy between the results shown on the web page vs. what the "Accenture search for an individual results" are? I think they assumed (for the overall AG results) that you left the boat at the wave start time. But in reality no one really did, it was just a free for all off the boat. My watch time from Start to Finish exactly compares to the "Accenture Search by Individual Tracking feature", not the overall result which is off by almost a minute. Anyone else see this?

Great picks.. Was wondering how did you carry the camera while swimming?
I did alcatraz back in 1995 bought a disposable
water proof camera but when came time I didn't know how to hang on to it couldn't get it to fit down my wetsuit without unzipping... Just curious..

I've carried cameras on bike and run before but this is way cool....Awesome brought back some memories. Thanks

If you look at the third picture, it is of me and you can see the camera around my neck by a shoelace. My buddy took that picture with his camera that was carried in the same manner. When done taking picture, I would put it behind me and start swimming. The forward motion would make the camera drag behind me at the surface level. I never felt it while swimming.

These pictures without a doubt will make it even harder to get into Alcatraz in the future. During the Pre-race meeting the day before the race the swim director talked about the Alcatraz swim and said it will be an incredible experience that will stay with you the rest of your life. He told us to stop during the swim and do 3 things. 1st turn around and look back at the Island, then look to your left and take in the view of the city, finally before you start swimming again look to your right at the Golden Gate Bridge. These are views that you will not be able to duplicate on a postcard. These pictures are incredible and describe the experience that the swim director was telling the race participants that they would enjoy for the rest of their lives.
