That was a nice piece you wrote. I did not know Dave, but I have a cool picture of he and I celebrating 4th/5th in AG at Texas 70.3 in 2014. He was so pumped on that stage. So tragic.

I probably had half dozen concussions in my BMX days and I stopped when I was about 17. Dave did it until his mid-30's and he was a thousand times the daredevil I was... and he did it nearly every day for almost 20 years. Some of his crashes were horrific.

I agree that jumping to the CTE card is a bit premature and conversationally dangerous but I guarantee Dave bonked his noggin countless times and god knows how many concussions he sustained.

Concussions definitely aren't the seemingly harmless injuries we thought they were years ago. 87/91 deceased NFl payers were found to have CTE, Dave had some horrific crashes and i hope they do look at his brain, these action sports could be worse than NFL.

I have had two concussions in my life. One that knocked my out from a skate board fall when I was young. One when I was hit by a car at the Vineman race.
These studies scare me.

I've had three major concussions in my life (one of which was bad enough that I blacked out for 45 minutes, had a seizure, and was airlifted) and at least five minor concussions from skateboarding/skimboarding growing up... I'm 26 now...

Seven - first at age 10, perhaps, most recent in 1990; I don't think any were minor

I'm 4 dozen & 6 years old now

Sorry for your loss and that you find yourself in that position but don't beat yourself hard on that. Even trained professional can't always see signs as there may not be any to detect.

With apologies to Dave Mirra and others who suffer suicidal tendencies: I feel that it's fair to posit that part of that statistic is mostly correlation to risky behavior that results in increased probability of concussions, of which the root cause may be depression. In other words, "correlation is not causation." There may well be some link to brain damage and increased suicidal tendencies, and those with depression are known to engage in risky behavior (which may lead to concussions), and the collective population with these varied experiences are possibly difficult to separate in a study.

When I rolled up on his driveway he was ready to go, aero’d out like always with that supercool custom black P5, disk wheel, and his old fallback Kask aero helmet.

I was listening to TRS podcast last night, ad he mention the same thing, and I got to thinking ...

You know how surfers always say: "Eddie Would Go"?

Triathletes should say: "Dave Would Go ... Aero"

Haven't seen this posted anywhere. Outside Online posted a well-done article that fleshes out some of what he was going through leading up to his death.
