I can hardly stand up!
This is wild. I woke up this morning at 4:30 with the room spinning. When I got to the walk-in clinic at 8am, I was so dizzy I had trouble walking, felt like I was going to puke and my hand writing was way more sloppy than usual. I was diagnosed with ''labyrinthitis'', inner ear inflammation and refered to a ENT doc. I also had an MRI this morning to make sure I didn't have a stroke. I have three medications: valium and another for vertigo and another for nausea. They told me that this could take a couple of days to a couple of weeks.

Hope I can at least get to the pool tomorrow. Right now I'm sitting here doing nothing.

Why would you even consider going to the pool until you are better? Missing a workout is not going to cost you any fitness. Hopefully you get better quickly

If I were in your position I'd not consider running or swimming or riding outside until you get resolution on this. Stick to the indoor trainer. If anything happens you won't fall. Or drown.

+1. Loss of balance is not to be trifled with. An inner ear infection might set you back a week. An injury from running, swimming, or biking on the road could set you back much longer than that. If you do anything, get on your trainer.

Right now, anything I try would be just going through the motions. I was thinking that I was unlikely to drown at the pool. Have to wait a little.

Swam in the Hudson River Sunday, too bad

Dont put your health in jeopardy just to gain an extra couple of days of exercise. The risk is not worth it.

So you probably just have an ear infection. Take a few days off and get well, it won't kill you. In fact in the end you might end up better off.

So you have vertigo. May be labyrinthitis (have you been sick? has anyone around you been sick? like with sinusitis or a cold or something), but it could also be BPPV - benign positional paroxysmal vertigo. If it's the latter, you could cure yourself doing the Epley maneuver. Look it up on youtube. Best of luck. And be careful - those meds you were given have side effects - no driving, no biking, no swimming while you are on those.

Oh, and please don't go into any swimming pools with vertigo. Probably a bad idea.

Wish you a speedy recovery.

Two wheels good. Four wheels bad.

I went through something similar 10 years ago. I noticed while running that I was a little dizzy to the point I thought I might fall over to one side. It didn't bother me when I sat down or laid down, although the room seemed to be spinning if I laid down after a bad episode. I felt best in the morning but as the day went on it would get worse. To make it worse I was changing jobs in 2 days. To disguise it, I walked down the halls with one finger on the wall as a form of sensory balance. It slowly faded over 3 weeks with no repeat. I saw a doctor but they couldn't find anything.

My guess was I had some sort of inner ear blockage. In the three weeks prior, I had flown overseas and back and several domestic trips and my ears did not clear fully on the last flight. I believe that was the cause, but at the time I was wondering if I had a brain tumor. Balance is nothing to mess around with. I hope it clears up quickly for you.

Feeling much better today. Still on medication but I didn't take the valium this morning. A little dizzy, nothing like yesterday. I'm going out for a walk this morning and if feel stronger, I'll get the bike onto the computrainer and do some spinning.

I must have been really high to think I'd get to the pool today. Soon I hope.

I wasn't swimming at the time, but there is no way that I could have done that dizzy. The computrainer is a great idea. Hopefully this will fade soon.

+1

Personally I love Macks. They also help minimize dizziness when standing up at the end of the swim, and (for me) not having water in my ears reduces nausea on the run.

Yesterday I went out for a 43 minute walk, then slept all day. Stopped taking ant-nausia med today. Now I'm only taking antivert for dizzyness and I see the ENT doc at 10:30. I'm tired of this, no more swimming in the hudson for me.

I saw the ENT doc today. He said that this has nothing to do with swimming. He said ''it's the kind of thing that your body does to let you know that it's still in charge''. It's not an infection. Same thing the walk in doctor said, I thought he was just being vague. Today the doctor told me to stop the antvert, since it's what's causing me to be lethargic and same as the other doc said that it takes a couple of days to a couple of weeks to clear up. He said since I'm already feeling some what better, it should be on the shorter side. I go back next Thursday for another test but should feel fine by then.

I had something similar happen to me last year...not as bad as yours but a very similar process. It lingered for weeks but never like the initial spell. Be safe!

I'm feeling good again. When this hit me, like a lot of posters here, I thought it was an infection. I didn't even call my GP and I got over to the walk in clinic at 8 am. By 8:30 I was home and my wife was over at CVS picking up my prescriptions. By 10 I was starting to feel better. This morning I ran, slowly, for 40 minutes. Tomorrow I hope to be running a little faster and swim.

NO.

I have blown each of my eardrums around 8-10 each. I was a diver in college, been a surfer my whole life, and had tubes twice when I was little. I got this little pocket next to my ear drum that holds water and always starts infections. I was also a gymnast for 16 years so I have landed pretty bad a few times blowing them out. I was also a bull rider for two years. Not new to injury haha have a good amount of scar tissue on them but not enough to risk surgery to scrape it off.

I am 26.

I go to two specialists here in Florida that are brothers, their sister is also a doctor. Smartest people I know. There are bones inside the ear that can get infected and cause way bigger problems then what you have now. Take the meds, clear the infection, then go back to the doctor and get it checked.

My guess is that your ear will still feel "full" even when the infection is gone. With the inner ear stuff, fluid usually is a by product and since there is inflammation, it takes a good month or so to drain the fluid naturally - even after the infection is gone. It is annoying but it goes away. I get that after most inner infections. Fortunately most of my infections are outer ear due to a specific bacteria that is common and found in the oceans here.

Take the meds, go see the doc, and go from there. Do not risk it. Not worth it.

SWIMMING GOOD, NO SWIMMING BAD

We have a new pool up here in the Northern Catskills. I'm going back this afternoon. Should be back on the bike tomorrow and this will be behind me.

Bike tomorrow, but I will stay away from the high speed downhills for now.

I just ran 50 minutes, brutally slow. Yesterday was 40 minutes brutally slow. It must be the medication. Humans, even old ones, weren't meant to run so slow!
