I'm a 41-year-old mediocre triathlete who is a good runner, mediocre cyclist, and lousy swimmer. After five years of triathlons, I've realized that while I like all three sports, I'm no longer that excited to do all of them in a row during a race. I'm doing a couple OWS races this year, will race cyclocross again in the fall, and do a handful of running races during the year. I may do a HIM late in the year, but won't focus my training around it. Anyone else feeling the same way?
My favorite races have generally been oddballs, either in the distances or order of events, such as Alcatraz, AmZof, and Survival of the Shawangunks. And Savageman is awesome because of the bike course. I may do the Sea to Sky in New Hampshire next year if it's still around. But I have no interest in following a training plan to do a regular HIM or IM. And I've never seen the appeal of big city Olympic distance races.
No real point to be made here. Just some rambling thoughts.
