Hi! Welcome to Raleigh! You will love this city. The Triathlon scene here is large and there is plenty of places to ride and train. Inside Out Sports is the local triathlon shop http://www.insideoutsports.com

Tri Life is another shop that has opened up as well. http://www.trilife.co/ We have an aquatics center at TAC http://www.triangleaquatics.org/ and there are alot of YMCAs as well.

PM me if you need anything.

Where on the Northeast side? Are you close in, just off the beltway or out in Rolesville? Advice on where to live may be dependant on location.

I don't spend much time northeast or east of Raleigh, so I can't tell you much about it. I can tell you that living on the west side makes for some good training...lots of places to go.

TAC has the best swimming facilities for sure, but if you are going to be living on the northeast side, there are some other good facilities. Lifetime just opened a new gym off Falls of Neuse that has decent pools.

BTW - I hope you like good craft beer

Good luck to you

I live on the Northwest side of town near Umstead Park. Great running at Umstead and easy to get to the country from my house for bike riding. My wife works on the east side of town but prefers living where we do.

It's inside the beltway, so pretty close to downtown (off wake forest rd). I'm a little more familiar with the Jordan Lake area, I trained there a lot last summer. I was hoping to find something like that close. How are the city of Raleigh pools? There looks to be a number of them and they would be close to me.

thanks

Pullen Park pool is a nice aquatics center. I swam there for a bit before I joined the Y. I swam in an outdoor pool as well the city has and honestly, the YMCA is so much nicer.

I'm jealous. When I leave Tucson for good in the next 12-24mo it's to move to the RDU/CH area.

I live in Raleigh about 2-3 miles outside the Beltline off Wake Forest Road, so basically right about where you are. The city pools that I frequent (or at least try to frequent) are Millbrook and Optimist. What's cool about Optimist is that it goes to LC during the summer months and therefore has a crap ton of lanes for SC in the offseason. I've never had to share a lane swimming in a City of Raleigh pool (knock on wood).

Riding on the roads is unfortunately a scare until you get outside of 540. Once you're past there it's nice and quiet country roads for miles and miles... you just have to deal with the traffic to get there.

I'll second the YMCAs for swimming. I swim at the Cary Y, and it's $33/month if you're under 28. For something like $45 a month you can get a membership that allows you to use all 12 or however many triangle area YMCAs there are. Nice pools, good staff, and can't beat the price.

Riding on the main roads can be scary, but the side streets and the bike routes aren't as bad. Plus, the city is continuously attempting to integrate more bike friendly measures in it's overall planning. From just inside the beltline (not beltway, or else people will know you're a transplant) near wake forest rd., you're almost SOL in terms of convenient and efficient ways to get to nice roads for biking. As mentioned previous posts, you really have to get north of 540 to get to nicer quiet roads.

In terms of places to live, like someone else mentioned, I live near umstead park on the NW side of Raleigh, and access to the park for running is amazing. Also, in terms of biking, I can get out north past 540 without too much hassle, and west through Cary and Apex with a little more stop and go. Going north does provide a TON of options (Gorman, Butner, Creedmoor, Oxford, and Franklinton). Going west past Cary and Apex gets you to the roads around Jordan lake. I can also go south and get to some nice roads between Raleigh and Holly Springs, although I find cars in that area are a little less patient and courteous than towards the North and West. I have ventured south and east of Raleigh and there are some nice roads between Knightdale/Clayton/and Garner. Although getting there from where I live means navigating through downtown (which isn't bad at all).

The main concern I'd have with living around the beltline and wake forest rd. is that all the major arteries to get north or east past 540 are not bike friendly at all (e.g., Falls of Neuse/Wake Forest, Six Forks, Atlantic, etc.) Very narrow lanes and no dedicated bike lane with cars easily traveling 50+. There is a master plan to redo the Six Forks corridor that would include a dedicated bike lane with buffers, but who knows if and when that would be completed. Honestly, if you don't mind a 15-20 minute commute, I'd look to live somewhere just north of 540, and if you're open to a 20-30+ minute commute, I'd consider somewhere near Wake Forest.

Feel free to send me a PM if you have any other questions.

Well I'll be back this summer again if I can find a furnished rental for 4-5 months. Inventory is much, much thinner this year then last. For every furnished rental I'm finding for this year, I found 5 last year.

Thanks for all the information. I look forward to having less crowded pools, DC pools are packed!

Are there some standard routes you ride? I've done the Kerr lake routes several times.

Found this while looking for places to swim while in Raleigh next week. I need a lap pool for about an hour 2x from m-th. Any place allow drop ins that's not crowded? I'm a swimmer first so I have very little tolerance for old ladies or 85 degree water :) I'm hitting the Indoor trainer in my hotel room and I suppose I can hit treadmill or run around the mall in wee hours. I'm at the Hilton Garden Crabtree right across from the mall. Any suggestions?

Triangle Aquatic Center is also an option. Finley and TAC are about the same, time wise, from Crabtree

Welcome (in advance) to Raleighwood. There's a good tri community here. Personally I live south of Raleigh since I wanted to be outside of town and am busting to the beach every weekend during the summer. There are a ton of places to ride from Johnston County (south and east where I am) out west towards Jordan and Harris Lakes. I've swam at Pullen for a while and it was ok- it could be crowded early morning with swim teams when I was going. I work at NC State so I have used the Facilities there for the last 15 years and am out of touch w/ other pool options. I'll also throw in the endorsement for Umstead- it's a great place to run with some moderate hills and is shaded even in the summer.

As far as living options, it's really just personal preference. Depends how close to town you want to be. If you want to be outside of town, looking at your commute will be a big factor as some roads are much worse than others if you go to work during normal hours. If you go in early or go to train early it's not a factor. I'd be happy to talk in more detail if you want to PM me. Happy moving.

I'll also add that the greenway is right outside your door at that hotel. With a headlamp, I would have no qualms about running on the greenway early in the morning.

The map is a little tough to read, but your hotel is about where the #24 is on the map. https://www.raleighnc.gov/...reenwaySystemMap.pdf
