Here in New Zealand, we have Salary Continuance Insurance, for what you're talking about.

It covers both accident and illness whereby you can't work for extended periods. I have it as part of my salary package. A while back, the company cancelled it. I got it privately. When head office found the local accountant cancelled it, they made him re-instate it.

Given that I have a mortgage (with mortgage insurance), wife and 2 kids, I like to know they're taken care of if I can't work. I wouldn't be without my SCI. I cycle to work every day, and on weekends. New Zealand has a high death rate per capita of motorists and cyclists (my cousin was killed on her bike a few years ago) so I prepare for the worst.
