Your heart rate during long slow runs, what should it be?

What should heart rate be during long slow runs? I've been keeping it in 75% to 80% range, too high?

That is OK. It is right in zone 2, which is about right for long runs. You might start in the 70-75% range and finish in the 80% range.

This is the zone system I like : http://strong-running.blogspot.com/...nd-racing-zones.html

I think that's right on. HR zones for running are a little higher than cycling. I consider 80% to be roughly the separation between zone 1/2. Of course that assumes I believe my Threshold HR is accurate. I tend to use pace instead because of that and use Mcmillian or similar pace calculator based on threshold pace and race results.

You still using that dumb formula or did you actually find your max HR?

My max is 195, I do my long runs at 135-150bpm. 80% is getting too high if you ask me, its on that grey-zone between hard work and easy.

From my own experience training with some sub 15 guys, their easy stuff is super slow, but that allows/means that their hard stuff is super hard.

Personally I think pace is a better indicator. I alms tnever run with a HR. For me that generally means my Half Mara pace plus 1min per Km.

Of what, some sort of max HR number, 220-age, 180-age+X, LT field test, etc?

If using HR as a training method do a field LT test and find your zones. The following link has the test descriptions and a link for a spreadsheet for the calculations. Long steady runs typically build into Z2 and end in mid-upper Z2 or low Z3.
