When to Use Disc Wheels
I have read a lot of people recommend using a rear disc on race day and looking at wind tunnel test results for various brands I can appreciate why. What I am wondering is how you know when "not" to ride a disc? I have to assume wind has a lot to do with it and personal experience. Just wondering if there is some sort of "rule of thumb". Thanks in advance

Titanflexr has a great rule of thumb for when it is too windy to ride a disc. http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...post=2577030#2577030

A rear disc will make you more stable even in the worst wind conditions.

So, to answer your question: the only time you shouldn't ride a rear disc is when the race rules prohibit you from doing so (ie, Kona).

Thanks, this is really helpful. I knew there must have been a discussion on this topic already, just not sure when/where to look.

If it is so windy you would be afraid to ride a bike at all, but you have to any way, then don't use a disc.

If it is a 13% grade uphill TT that either doesn't come back down, or the downside is extremely technical, don't use a disc.
