I just broke the world swim suckness record!
I think I may have achieved something never done before in the history of triathlon. How bad do I suck at swimming you might ask??? First a little background... In small, local races I'm happy to place in my age group. Probably will never contend for an overall spot at even small races. At medium to large races I'm not even close to contending for an AG place, just hope to finish top 25% or so.

Last weekend I competed in a small local sprint with a 500 yd pool swim. There were 17 in my AG. In my AG I had the fastest bike and run split (happy about that) and still managed to finish 3rd in my AG. I didn't know it was possible to have the fastest bike and run and finish 3rd.

Is this a triathlon first or is it possible that anyone has sucked at swimming as much as me before?

My first Olympic race, I had a faster run split than swim split. That is surely the world swim suckness record.

My buddy and training partner was a collegiate runner so he is very legit on the run, he can bike well too, but his swim is attrocious....

at the SOMA 1/4 one year, he got 3rf in his ag and im pretty sure he was within the 10 last swimmers, according to him, the lifeguards kept poking him with the padle because he was so far off course, they literally had to paddle next to him because he couldnt swim straight.

he had either the fastest or 2nd fastest run that day...cant remember, it was a few years back. For reference, he also showed up at his first ever 50k ultra (which is on a ridiculously mountainous course) and got 3rd.....withought training and having never raced longer than 13.1

In Ultraman Canada 2005 we had a guy with a 10k swim split which was 1min 11sec slower than his 144k bike split.

Bless you Eugene. RIP.

No shit Adam, the poor bugger was a good biker but poor swimmer. It also didn't help that his escort boat didn't seem to understand the meaning of "a straight line" .

I have had a faster run the swim split at a sprint before. I knew the swim was really really bad, but I never thought of it in terms of being slower than my run split.

I wonder what is worse? Your feat or mine. Mine was 750 meter swim and 5K. I guess it works out about the same.

I was debating whether I should squeeze a swim in today or not. Debate over, I need to swim!

this is slowtwitch.
the competition for the suckiest swim/suckiest swimmer is MUCH tighter than the competition for the best swim or swimmer.
i thought i was bad (probably because, as any actual swimmer will tell you, i am), but as a mendoza line guy - 2:00/100 - i'm almost MOP around here.

I couldn't agree more! Well, sprints are sprints. If you get into the Olympic distance the game changes a lot. Look at the awesomeness of finishing first in two of three, 77% greatness rate!!!

To be honest I would also call challenge on the other peeps in your AG. In those pool swims they can be cutting the lanes, and you never know you might have done an extra 50.

My first Oly Distance Tri was a wave start with different colored caps. A rainbow of swim caps passed by me. I was in the third of ten waves and by the end of my swim, all seven swim cap colors that started after me had passed me by.

Those were the days before posting results online. You had to call a 1-900 number to get your results. I called and got one digit off the 1-900 number. "Candi" answered and said it was it was the first time someone called her asking for race results but if that was what I wanted she would "go with the flow".

I never did get my results.

One year at the Florida Challenge (half iron) I was either last in my AG out of the water or close to it (I forget now) but still managed to get to the finish line second in AG. If you're slow enough, you'll have no opportunities to draft and have more trouble navigating since you're isolated, and that of course compounds the problem.

I took the one less traveled by,
Which is probably why I was registering 59.67mi as I rolled into T2.

I can't "swim" at all despite all of the laps I swim and all of that coaching I wasted money on...

2009 Chicago Tri - 1,210 "fastest" swim and managed to finish 121st overall (4,200+ finishers) & 15th age group...

I am definitely just a duathlete who happens to own (and sometimes foolishly use) a wetsuit!

You're a fish next to our pools record holder for the 100.

There's this great little guy who swims and ALL OUT 100 in just over 8 minutes. I'm telling you, he is swimming as hard as he can.

Below is my Ironman Wisconsin result from 2006.

That year if I did not bitch about swimming so slow for the first 30-40 miles of the bike I would have qualified. Took a while to get 1.20 out of my head however.
Still remember telling my wife " No Kona this year" after the swim and still remember her telling me" Shut the hell up and bike faster !"

At St A's on Sunday I was bottom 10% in swim and top 34% in my AGE group.

Yes, there is a difference between top 33% and 34%.

Whenever I want feel better about my swimming, I come here. Though I inevitably see bike splits posted, and end up crying.

Qualified there in 2008 with a 1.05 swim. 5.15 ride and 3.17 run. Then went 1.21 in Kona.
I suck at swimming some of the time and am average most of the time.

Only did one tri last year, a sprint, I was roughly 600/1000 swim, 4th bike, 26th run, for second in AG...I can't swim. I never cared much, but with the advent of Xterra it does bother me, because I MTB fairly well, and getting on single-track behind 80% of the field is really, really, frustrating. So I basically have quit doing tris till I decide to commit to "fixing" my swim. Probably no tris at all this year...

Same, I had a terrible swim at St. A's. Wasn't last in my age group, but close... Bike and run, much better. I am definitely a candidate for the swim suckness record as well. I'm just glad I got out of the water on my own!
