This was a long day for a lot of athletes but it was REALLY long for this guy. We cheered him on every chance we could. He finished in 16:26:33!!

I think his seat is a little high-that may explain why he went +16 hours.

His face never changed during the entire race. Even when he walked the marathon in 5:56:15.

What's even more impressive is that after he finished he played a gig with his band The Cure.

I truly do as well. There is not a snowball's chance that I could ever finish on a bike like that...

I'm not intending to be a dick or a troll (but will probably get accused of being one anyway)

but I thought the rules stated one had to ride a "racing bike", with there being a definition of said racing bike.
I think that rule came about by one of the early pioneers of IM, racing (reasonable fast too) on a MTB or crusier bike.

I mean more power to the dude on the MTB for starting and finishing, but as I understand it, he should have been DQ'd?

Its a hybrid. So he is safe! Haha.

Pretty cool. I think it goes to show that 17 hours is very doable for most anyone.

I would love to know more about this guy. It would besweet if he lost a bet and this was the outcome.

I've never heard of a "racing bike" rule. There are limits like no tandems, recumbents, full fairing bikes but not a "racing bike" rule that I'm aware of. Here's the only thing I could find in the IMMoo athlete guide re bike specifications (also USAT rule 5.11 on bike specifications doesn't have a "racing bike" rule):

No tandems, recumbents, fairings, or any add-on device designed exclusively to reduce resistance are allowed. Any new, unusual,
or prototype equipment will be subject to
a determination of legality by the event organizer and/or Head Referee.

Didn't I say that finishing an IM (as opposed to racing an IM) is not a big deal and anyone fit could do it and it isn't as big a deal as people think it is? And I got attacked by everyone here?

Anyone who can swim 2.4 miles could do an IM. There's plenty of time to swim 2.00/100y pace and then ride the bike at 16 mph and then walk the marathon, and easily make the cut-off.

Cut-off ought to be 15 hours.

same here. It's one of my go to pot stirring posts, despite the flames and despite not really wanting to do it. But people need to get over themselves.

Why does that guy doing an IM bother you enough to suggest that the standards should be set to not let him? Spending a day doing 16 + hours of exercise, no matter what the pace is a pretty healthy thing to do. Better he should just sit on the couch and play x box all day?

That's what I was going to say. We were an obnoxious bunch, surrounded by even more obnoxious bunches, half way up the last monster climb on Midtown Rd, and we got all kinds of smiles & laughs from bikers all day long. But not that kid, he kept his game face on 100%. Super cool to see he finished, not a chance I could do it on that bike.

A bike is a bike, a racer is a racer. The guy rode a hybrid during a race and finished before midnight so why is he impressive?

My first year at IMLP 2005 i volunteered and registered for my 1st IM. There was a guy swam the course in board shorts, rode the course on a mountain bike. I saw him finish 1st loop of bike course but, never heard from again.... Mike Rielly was cheering him on!

Isn't everything on a tri bike designed to reduce resistance? this rule sounds retarded to me.

the iron fans get really excited for the late finishers. Although to us ST elites it seems reasonable to cutoff at 15 hours you have to be thoughtful of all segments of the population. Lots of people do it for all different reasons.

Nicely put.

@Dilbert: not everyone who races is under 40. The M70-74 AG winner was the only person in his age group to go under your 15-hour cutoff with a 14:57.

The fact is that the IM cutoff is 17 hours. It is what it is. You sound as if those slower than 15 hours are somehow diminishing the value of the title "Ironman Finisher" at your expense. If "Ironman Finisher" isn't prestigious enough for you, then try for something like "AG Winner" instead.
