training in livermore
Hi everyone, I am going to spend three months in Livermore for an intership at the Lab.
Could anybody give me some info about training possibilities in Livermore?
Are there any group rides and master swim programs I could join?
Thank you in advance!

Check out the Valley spokesmen race team:

http://www.vsrt.net/

I think there's a group at LLNL that do lunch rides (every day). I think there's also a pool at the lab too...

There is a fast and normal speed group that rides everyday from LLNL. There is also a pool, but not sure if opened yet. A new pool in city of Livermore is close by. You have no shortage of rides, and a couple tri groups to choose from.

And that lab pool is one large pool if I remember right.

Thanks everyone, sounds like there are quiet some options. One more question I would like to ask is if it is safe to go on a ride on my own. And what about the running? Seems to be a little bit different in the US than in Germany...

its like a superr olympic size. Used to do some astronaut training in it or something. Last year it had a huge crack , so they closed it down and drained it

Yep, you should be hearing from Hinds57 and JohnA at some point, though they're in the process of recovering from a Mt. Diablo summit-and-back ride this morning(while I'm working, the bastards...) Anyway, you have lots and lots of options from the Livermore area and some great riding and running as well...

Livermore Valley Tennis Club has a masters program. M-W-F at 6am. Plenty of great running in the area, and there are regular group rides that leave from the lab.

Here are some links that you might find useful.

Unlimited training options in Livermore and the lab in particular. You will have 3-4 lunch time group rides of lab folks every day. They have the only 50m pool in the area and a masters program, also the tennis club masters JohnA just mentioned. The riding options are fantastic with great roads and tons of hills. There are 2 lakes for open water swimming as well as tons of trails. We have a number of Slowtwitch folks who ride on the weekend. There are also some other lab interns who post here.

Here are a few pics of the riding in Livermore form out ride today.

The bike is awesome. I took it down Diablo today, it descends like it's on rails. Going up sucked - not the bike's problem, just that my ass is fatter and my muscles smaller than they were last year. Not sure if I'm racing this year. More interested in training at the moment.

If you like hills you will love it here. Also this is a very safe place to live and train. Look up Lake Del Valle on Google Earth and you will see miles and miles of running and Mt Bike trails as well as clean open water swimming.

Here are a few more shots of today's ride up Mt Diablo to give you something to look forward to.

It's on the calendar, gotta put more miles on the bike, though. A lot more miles... Having a real job is cramping my style, though.

You can't throw a rock in the Tri-valley/San Ramon/Walnut Creek area without hitting at least two triathletes. If you want to join a club come check out the Forward Motion Race Club based out of Danville (10 miles North of Livermore) Regular Saturday rides every weekend, open water swimming clinics at Del Valle, Wednesday night runs in Danville, track practices, open water swimming at Shadow Cliffs (until the weeds grow too thick around mid June - Some people just won't swim there anytime though).

You get race credits as a club member good toward $5 off per race for stuff at the Forward Motion Store in Danville. I just used up last years points in December and paid $12 for a pair of new running shoes.

Hope you like your summers HOT, it's brutal in Livermore by July. But then again perhaps you 3 months will be over? Mar-May are absolutely gorgeous.

Welcome to training paradise.

The dreaded Devil Mountain Double! Looks like Martin got John to drink some of the graybeard century dude cool aid.
Call my cell in the morning. John and I will be at the start of the race on the embarcadero.

Livermore?!? Green?

Never seen it in that color. Of course I'm only there in July, August and September.

WRT Running. You should definitely hit up the Sycamore Grove area. Park at the soccer fields off Holmes. Run south... and don't stop. Oh and the hill to get up to the top of Del Valle is a bit of a pain, but being able to look down into the valley is well worth the effort.

I'll be back again in August, so I hope to see some of you guys again.
