the real scoop on hookah + triathletes
Guys,

Just came back from Israel and there were LOTS of hookahs everywhere. I couldn't help but try it, and I'm wondering what the effect on endurance athletes may be.

It certainly felt different than the one time I tried weed back in the day and seems like its softer than cigarettes would be. It feels as if its basically really good smelling air that you hold in your mouth.

Anyone know what effects this might have?

step away from the hookah. seriously, it's only softer because it goes through water. it's still smoke, and will still corrupt your lungs, not to mention energy and motivation. it's not worth it, plus the cops really are looking.

(just kidding)

about it showing in urine and the cops seeing it...it IS only tobacco in there.

good thing I didn't bring one of these things home; although it is a great decoration, I'm sure I'd smoke it more than what would be good for me.

For limited use there should be no adverse effects. people who smoke for several years (up to 10) have been shown to essentially clear out their lungs within a year of stopping. This varies based on usage, as well as duration of smoking, but the lungs are quite resilient. the hookah may effect your performance the next day, but there shouldn't be any appreciable long term problems (again, with limited use).

Dude, why do you feel the need to add a zillion spaces between each line of text in your post, its quite annoying that you say 2 words but your post takes up room like a novel.

1. Dude (just returning your salutation)

2.Why do I leave two spaces?

I can't answer that question because it is not a deliberate thing I do - will be mindful to not do this after this post.

Sorry if it aggravates you

What can I say (Damn - there I go again)

You will grow a third eye, but only if you're an endurance athlete. Doesn't affect normal folks in that way.

i smoke mabe once a month at the most, and not during race season, mabe 7 times a year.

In Israel, it would be offensive to actually inhale from a communal hookah, as it would be gone before everyone got a puff. in most social situations, it should be puffed, like a cigar.

As for the nay-sayers here, none of them have made a fact based argument against hookah, and don't seem to realize that hookah is not synonymous with weed.

Might have something to do with Grace Slick.

"White Rabbit"

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen softly dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's off with her head
Remember what the doormouse said:
"Feed your Head
Feed your Head!"

well, it is true that hookah in middle east is not necessarily a drug. typically students in college smoke, and it is an alternative to the "drinking scene".

in America, hookah is generally about smoking pot. it is a cultural difference that's all. personally, i would rather smoke a very good cigarette, or joint, as opposed to a hookah. also, i would probably rather drink and mingle as opposed to sitting around a hookah. but that is just me. see, everybody has their thing. some people train (too much) and that is their drug. look around, most people have an escape of some sort. so, my take is--if this fellow wants to smoke, then smoke. it probably is pretty cool to sit around in an eclectic scene and smoke out of one.

life is short, do what ya want. (the catch is: there is always a consequence)

no one needs to give an essay on the effects of tobacco. that has been played way out, and while some may defend it (but you don't inhale!), it's still a carcinogen, period.

Sounds like you had a fun vacation. Although once or twice a year probably isn't going to hurt you in the slightest, I was both unfamiliar and curious and found this abstract.

I always thought it was ...... a poke in the eye with a 'sharp' stick. Although a stick in the eye is a stick in the eye so i guess it doesn't really matter.

I didn't know "good cigarettes" exist!?! Maybe there is good heroin, too?
