powertap in the rain
How does your power meter hold up in the rain? I purchased a power tap C1 in june, at Tremblant this weekend it didn't last 20 minutes before it took a crap. I opened it up and it was drenched inside. I ordered it from clever training.com, and they are looking into what i need to do going forward… I'd think power meters getting wet is par for the course, being on a bike and all.
Anyone else have issues with their meters? Anyone have experience with how Powertap will handle the situation?

That should not have happened. Did you replace/put in a battery when you got it? If so, you may have not tightened it, or not included the rubber O ring.

I've been in the rain several times with my PowerTap and it's never taken a crap, or filled with water...

I never opened it before. When i opened it yesterday, the screws were very tight, and the rubber gasket was intact… yet there was a lot of water. I got it airing out, but even if it somehow works again, I'm not going to be confident to ever use it in wet conditions again… for $699 I'm disappointed, hopefully they make it right.

Rain killed my C1 as well. Powertap was super fantastic, as usual, and mailed me a new one. Well, water also killed that one, but came back alive for my next ride. Not quite sure what I'm going to do, as I've been injured for the past 8 weeks or so.

I'm glad you had a good experience with them. The first thing customer service told me to do was put the meter in a bag of rice.... That really wasn't the answer I expected. I sent them my reciept from clevertraining, and I'm still waiting to hear back from them.
As we know, once any electronic experiences water damage, it's never as good as new.

Never had a rain effect from any of my power-taps. Gotta be a seal problem.

I've had 4-5 powertap hub-based power meters in the past, and none of them ever worked when wet though they all were older models so perhaps the technology has improved. I moved on to other brands of PMs many years ago in large part due to the fact that my powertaps never got a signal when wet, and riding in the rain is unavoidable where I live.

I've used two different power taps in the rain for five years and never had a problem, including Sunday at Mont Tremblant. Sorry you lost your data.

They gave me a return authorization, but said they'll repair it, instead of replacing it...I guess I'll have to intentionally ride in the rain to see how it works..
It was my first IM, I trained with power on the CT, and had a plan for the race... I flew blind and have no idea where I was at NP wise... I'm sure I over did it! I won't forget my first IM that's for sure.

This is the first I've heard of the C1 having trouble in the rain. The previous version hubs had some problems, but I haven't heard of anything like this on the C1. Hope you get it squared out. Yes, PowerTap customer support is pretty awesome.

I have a PowerTap hub (sl+) and used it at hitts NY 70.3 and IMMT, both in the pouring rain. (Maybe it's me?) no problems either time.
