multisport watch? flexible GPS watch? refurbished okay? Lots of GPS questions
Quote | Reply
I'm thinking of finally spending some money on GPS toys, but don't know where to start.

First question: Are refurbished Garmins reliable? I'm seeing refurbished Edge 500s for $140 and various forerunner watches for $85+(210, 405-thoughts between the two?). If I could count on those, I would probably just buy a bike computer and a running watch both.

But if they aren't reliable,

Would that be the cheapest way to enable reliable, hassle free GPS tracking without having to drag my phone around? Could the lower end watches or a garmin 500(don't want the 200; it doesn't display cadence)

As far as to what data I'm interested in: Just idle curiousity towards mileage, and to track general trends(am I doing my bike commute any faster than I was 3 months ago? How does my common 3 mile run compare to 3 months ago?). I might start training by heart rate. Probably not. I don't have a power meter(but I'll probably get one at some point later in the year or next year. I'm waiting for the 4iiii, watteam powerbeat and powertap chainrings to hit the market in hopes of price wars.). At this point, I'm not likely to really dig into the data to analyze it, though I might in the future. I generally only look at data at the end of a workout, not during. If I do decide to start purposefully training instead of mostly aimless exercising, It'll likely only be for 1 workout on the run and 2 on the bike, per week. I try to be conscientious about my swimming, but that's because swimming is still fucking hard and I'm adult onset, so I can't afford to be lackadaisical.

I'm also seeing the 310xt on sale for $140(http://www.amazon.com/...0WXWVSVPZFRRA2Q05V7C) Should I just get that and not worry about anything else?

Am I going to see a difference in capability/usability between a bike gps+running watch compared to a multisport watch that costs the same as both separate devices?

Are there any other brands I should be looking at?

Strangely, I'm really torn up about this. Normally I do tons of research before any purchase(because I'm poor and want to make sure I'm spending wisely, I like doing research and dislike buyer's remorse). But ultimately I exercise because it manages my mental health issues better than therapy, drug regimens, or anything else I've tried. Oh, and vanity-I didn't like looking in the mirror when I was fat. ;) Races and absolute fitness metrics aren't actually that important, even if I do enjoy progress. But I've delibrately been trying to keep exercise simple, instead of getting caught up in the analysis and it turning into work(which I've done with previous hobbies). So I'm kind of at odds with wanting to research, but wanting simplicity. Wanting data, but being scared of too much data. etc.

That and Garmin's product labels not necessarily making any sense, heirarchy wise. They're almost as bad as intel/amd/nvidia. Makes research more annoying than fulfilling.

So. Garmin/GPS advice. Is using a watch on the bike frustrating, or manageable? Do I really need to spring for a multisport watch-how much of a difference is there, comparing ease of use? Could I throw an Edge 500 in my pocket and use it on a run, adequately? Or should I just go for an edge 500+a cheap watch? If I actually start being serious about training(B/R especially. Swim I'll just use the giant clock at the pool), will I regret going cheap on electronics? Should I look at other brands?

Right now I'm leaning towards that 310XT watch.

I'm not too worried about needing actual navigation features. If I get lost, I'm totally okay with, 'okay, I know home is roughly southwest from here, let's just go in that direction until I see some landmarks'. Or I'll ask directions.

In case it matters: my riding is generally transportation downtown(I don't really track these...), a relaxed 8 miles down a MUP(and back), or riding that MUP to some semi-rural, wide shouldered sparsely trafficed flat roads. Or into the Texas Hill Country. Running is usally downtown or on the MUP. I keep meaning to ride out to some parks to run on trails, but never get around to it. I run 20-30 miles per week(at a 8:45-9:30 pace, with no attempt at speedwork) and ride ~200 miles per week. The commute is 100 miles minimum, most of the remaining miles are tacked onto the commute.

Thanks y'all.

You should be taking a look at Suunto. I've had a few different Garmin devices over the years and they eventually all went to the heap, whereas Suuntos last forever. Same data points, much stronger reliability.

With the 920 out, I would not buy the 310. Get the 910. It's a better watch than the 310. I have a broken 310 and a 910.

You can buy a bike mount for the 310xt (and likely the 910?). So you can use it more like a normal bike computer. I still use an older 305 a quite like it. It tells me all I need to know. When it breaks I'll upgrade to a "new" out of date computer.

You start off listing bike devices and then end with a 310, are you wanting to track running or swimming?

You wrote down a lot of stuff, but what do you want the watch to do?

Refurbished is fine. I have had a 310 refurbished with no problems and now upgraded to a 910. Note: Watch Slowtwitch classifieds...people are always dumping 310's to upgrade to 910.

As for watch (speaking only Garmin since that is what I have always used)

310 Refurbished if you don't care about tracking accurate swim yardage. (or used one from classifieds)

910 If you want it to do it all.

That is my 2 cents.

That was a fine answer last year. Now with 920 out, people are dumping 910s and they can be had for cheap. Buying a used Garmin is a gamble though. They work great, or have all kinds of trouble. Seems like there is no middle ground. Which firmware is on them seems to make a lot of difference. Latest firmware isn't always the best either.

I would not look at used 310s. However a brand new 310 might be worth looking into. They are only $150 and you get a warranty.

I don't use strava but I think that you can upload data between the two as of this year. Not 100% sure on that one.

Yes, does not matter which Garmin device. You set it up so that when you upload your workouts to Garmin Connect, it auto-syncs with Strava. Works great with my really old 305, and my new 220

I have a tomtom multisport watch. You may want to consider it as well. it's simple, automatically uploads to the interweb (and strava) when it bluetooth's with your phone (don't have to plug it in to your computer), doesn't cost alot. There are superior solutions already mentioned, but for a simple, low cost alternative without many bells or whistles, it might suit your needs. It doesn't do open water swim, but will count your laps in the pool.

Track and display speed, duration, and distance for runs and rides. Hopefully interfaces with a heart rate monitor and power meter. Uploads to strava. Cheap. I'm not sure what devices to look at, or even if I should be looking at two specialist devices instead of pondering a multi sport watch.

Don't care about swimming metrics. In the pool, I just swim until I can't swim anymore.

Edit: and then I eat. A lot.

I personally don't mind a watch on a bike mount, not sure what the specialist devices get you except maybe a bigger screen and metrics/compatibility/performance you don't sound like you want.

Google - Profile-Design-Universal-Aerobar and make that call though.

If you aren't interested in multisport/triathlon, I had a 410 for years that did that, unfortunately Garmin has neutered their affordable running watch in favor of you buying the 610. I really like the vivoactive but it doesn't support PM.

If you want to stay cheap, 310 isn't bad, 910 deals can be had, ambit 2 is worth looking into.

Yes you can trust a refurbed Garmin.

I had a Garmin Edge 500 which lost its cover and had worn out buttons, I paid £79 and sent back the old one and the refurb was like brand new and has worked fine.

I've gone for a complete change and have ordered the Tom Tom GPS Multisport which does not use ANT+ but bluetooth.

There are some other less costly options other than Garmin, like Tom Tom, Timex, Suunto and now even Epson have a Runsense watch.

Okay, another dumb question. Do Garmin, Ambit, TomTom, etc-do they save multiple workouts? Or do you have to upload every single workout before doing the rest? Or does it just upload everything in a batch whenever you let it have the internet?

garmins save multiple workouts until it has no memory left. you can batch upload them at any time, and then clear the memory on the watch. you're in Texas right? I have a 910 you could try out if you want

tomtom saves multiple workouts

I'm not sure how many workouts it could hold, but surely I've had at least three on mine at a time and it only showed 2/5 of memory used.

You have excellent memory! I'm in San Antonio, yeah.

Friend doesn't use his 310xt and is giving it to me for $75+a case of Shiner, so that's the route I'm going.
