is knee-over-pedal-spindle a myth?
I'm a newbie to bike fitting, have been playing around with the fit on my newish Roubaix on my own and plan to get a proper professional fit in the coming months. The assertion that the classic starting point for a fit of aligning the knee over the pedal spindle might not be necessary seems plausible to me, with the major caveat of my limited experience (and I guess TT bike fit ends up with the knee necessarily farther forward anyway). Curious about others' reactions to this: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/kops.html

It's a complete myth, your knee does not need to be directly over the pedal spindle. Google it, but have a read of Slowman's article here

I've never used KOPS as a reference in 25 years of racing tris which includes Kona.

For tri's, it is not really applicable.

For a road fitting (without the benefit of getting a full fitting done) - it is a good starting point. Is it the final answer? Maybe, maybe not. But for people with fairly normal body measurements, it represents a decent enough reference point to begin. For some, it may be fine, others may want to adjust from there.
