how deep is M35-39!
I may be Captain Obvious here...but geez. I thought 4:45 would have placed me top 20 in my AG at Cali 70.3. Nope. 36th. I know conditions were good...but wow...there are some fast dudes out there. And a lot of them.

I here ya...with the exception of Wildflower you have to go 4:30 to be in the top 10 anymore. I think we have reached the era of the professional age groupers!

I was amazed how many of you there were! It looked like there were more M35-39 than all women's age groups combined. Damn.

I think the same happened throughout the AG's. M18-24 got pretty steep (relatively) this year too!

And a lot of them have not gotten any slower as they have gotten older. Just look at results from a lot of the 50-54 folks. Studs.
I know when I watch Dave Scott go 4:30 something at the vineman 70.3, pretty amazing.

Dude, if you think 40-44 is going to cut you a break do a demographic analysis of 70.3 and Ironman...

M35-39 is almost always the largest in numbers in any tri, esp 1/2 to IM distances. Not necessarily the "toughest" though, that is often M45-50 or M50-55 with a HUGE desparity between the really fast and "average" or slow.

I hear ya'. Check out the results from Steelhead '06. I think over 50% of the top 25 were M35-39...I'm pretty sure they bussed in a bunch of studs in the AG.

i gotta say I have been following your "journey" for a while (mainly cuz I know what kids and job can do to a guy) and I gotta say:

a) smoking fast last weekend
b) kick ass on overall results (check yours against my local favorite WPRO's Lauren Jensen and Heather Haviland) and
c) I can't believe where you finished in your ag compared to overall finish

Great race, great work up to, and great part of the journey back

Ps Mrs. jammajin has approved your attendance on our couch just in case Rockman is still on your schedule

Check out the results from Steelhead '06[/quote]I think I was 18th or 19th OV with a 4;21 or 4:22 and 5th or 6th in the M35-39 AG at Steelhead. And I ran past 2-3 in that AG in the last 10k.

I agree that there are some smokin' fast people out there from 30 all the way to 39. My other half finished in 4:59 and got about 50th in his age group M 30-34 so definitely a fast race. California always seems to have the fastest people. He has raced the half in other states and always places much higher in his age group.

I agree that 4:45 is fast and should get you in the top 20!

It is solidly MOP for placing in the AG. You have to go sub 4;15 to be fast in this AG. Sorry to burst the bubble but it's too solid of an AG to consider 4;45 as fast.

desertdude. I agree, I don't consider 4:45 to be anything spectacular. But "you have to go sub 4:15 to be fast in this AG"? The winning AG time was 4:16 and he won the AG by nearly 10 minutes.

Anyway, no argument here...its a fast and deep age group....especially at Kona qualifiers like this one. I got some work to do....maybe I need a coach. Do you work with solid MOP'ers?

Assuming of course those two distances are part of my future, which they are no longer.
Oh man... Out here, the men's 40-44 often takes 3 of the top 5 in sprints and Olys...

You're on crack. Maybe flat course good day, 4:15 is the speed benchmark for a top AGer but 4:15 is not the benchamrk for a "fast" AGer. Notably 4:15 would have placed you top-3 AG in a handfull of 70.3 races last year. Notably you would have won the AG at Vineman, won the AG at Lake Stevens, placed 5th overall in AG at Eagleman, 2nd overall AG at Buffalo Springs, need I go on?

Brother our AG is deep. That's why of all the races I've done I'm happiest with a 4th place I got a 10 years ago. All 3 of the guys who finished in front of me went on to race pro/elite.

Congrats on a nice race but if you want to qualify DD is right...you gotta go sub 4:20 and hope some of the slots roll down.

This makes me sad because I'm probably the "fastest" comparatively that I'll ever be within the first year or two of competing in triathlons than I will be in 10 years.

Not really, I gave up drugs before getting to high school. I'm just realistic, going 4:45 isn't going to help out your cause for getting to Kona, getting a 70.3 slot, or placing top 5 in the M35-39. I've gone 4;16 in a 70.3 race and didn't crack the top 10 in this AG. You mention that 4;15 got 5th in the AG, quite out of the top 3 AG. I have a ton of 4:21-23's and none of those ever won the AG nor placed me in the top 5 AGers OV except for Soma which I consider a B, B- quality race for field depth.
I've coached tons of athletes over the years, looked at tons of results. Fast is fast, slow gets you leftovers at the finish line. I'll change my typing to say somewhere around 4:20 is fast.

So you basic definition of fast AG is top 3 overall, which I now understand. I think that is quite a skinny definition.

Having finished 3rd in the AG behind Brian at SOMA, I couldn't agree more with his assesment of our AG. SOMA is definatley NOT a 70.3 race in terms of depth of field, nor are a few of the other Half IM's mentioned in this thread. The only caveat I would allow for is the Clearwater race times I think were unusually fast due to the issue's on the bike course, everyone I know who competed there had bike splits well above their previous best, so that race is a bit suspect in terms of times.
But at a major race, men 35-39 is going to need a sub 4:20 to go top 3 at the very least and you can get 10 finishing under 4:30. It's brutal and competetive, though it is nice to be older and finish ahead of the 20 somethings ;).
For IMAZ, if I want to Kona qualify, I will definatley need to go sub 10, maybe sub 9:50 just to try and get one of the last slots based on last years qualifying times.

I just turned 35 too? Da*n, now I have 5 more years of getting beat up, only to turn 40 then start all over again! At least this is only my first full year of Tri's so maybe by the time I turn 40 I will be better!
