how much time saving for lightweight shoe? hoka question
Quote | Reply
wondering whether to drop another $$$ on the new hoka clifton. I run in bondi's now and was planning on using them for ironman florida and possible 70.3 augusta. seems like the clifton doesnt give up a ton of support, but 3 oz lighter. normally, i would say i would lose more time with a lightweight shoe than i would gain due to sore legs, but maybe not the case with the clifton? all else being equal, how much time can 3 oz of shoe weight save over a half/full?

Read the book Faster. Time saving will be next to nothing bc your feet are acting like a pendulum and in constant motion as you run. It's not a repeating "lift" of the weight. So 3oz while it seems like a lot when comparing shoe to shoe it will have next to no effect.

On the other hand, if you are in the market for new shoes and you don't lose anything support wise, might as well get the lighter one.

A general rule of thumb is you lose 1sec/mi/oz of shoe at the same effort level. I'll dig around for the article if I can find it.

No. Running would be a lot easier though if you could just let your feet cycle though like a pendulum . Jack Daniels did some research on this and found it was just under 1 sec/mile/oz I believe

Interesting to find out where this 1 sec per oz came from. On general weight it 2 seconds per POUND weight loss per mile. So for two shoes at 3 ozs difference you uys are saying 6 seconds per mile? You are the second person to sight this, do you know where I can find the article?

Cursory search shows him talking about it here (http://runsmartproject.com/...-affect-performance/) but I don't know about the actual study right now. He says 0.83 sec/mi/oz there. So yeah, according to that number, saving 3 ounces on shoes is ~5 sec/mi

The reason general weight has far less impact is that you're simply carrying it with you (on your gut, perhaps). Shoe weight has to be carried with you AND specifically pulled through on every stride.

Buy em. Train in Bondi race in Clifton. Its not a waste of $ since you have to buy shoes every X miles anyway.

Switched to Hokas in late June. Got a deal on the Bondi 2 at Boulder Running Co. Love 'em and have been running 3 X per week for about an hour each session. Did my IM on them last weekend. When do I need to buy new ones? How will I be able to tell when I've worn them out? They are already starting to show signs of wear on the tread pattern. Thnx!

I wear through the tread under the ball of my foot relatively quickly in these shoes, for me that tread just doesn't stand up to the concrete I'm usually stuck running on. I use ShoeGoo to protect this area when the tread's worn flat but I'd really prefer if they had a more abrasion resistant sole. With that said I've lost track of how many miles I have on my b2s. There's so much cushion I don't know if they can ever stop feeling soft. :) I am starting to see the upper tear where it meets the outsole and I know others have noticed this as a common occurrence eventually. I have the grey&yellow model that they released around summertime after a lot of people had reported tearing of the upper in the earlier models of the b2. My take is that with a bit of maintenance on the high-wear points on the sole you can just keep running these things till they fall apart. Anecdotally I've heard people say they get about twice the mileage on these over other shoes...

My Hokas have no heel material left, both shoes have splits at the toe box, I don't remember if they came with a tread and the lining is very thin. I'm not sure when they are considered worn out. I have a newer pair (only a year old) but they are not nearly as comfy.

Wear them until people you don't know, start donating to a fund to buy you new ones.

Weight can impact cadence and your hamstrings and hip flexors don't have to do as much work. It won't effect the prime movers (quads and glutes), but it will impact economy, especially late in a race.

The Bondi 3 replaced the 2 and its (to me) not the same shoe as the 2 is better cushioned. If you can wait until the 4 comes out (haven't heard what the changes are) I would.

Very interesting article by Dr. Maffatone on what it will take to break the 2 hour barier in the marathon. He discusses shoe weight in some detail.

Thanks for posting this article. I generally enjoy Dr. Maffetone's writings.

I wonder how the increasing prevalence of shod children in nations like Ethiopia and Kenya - possibly due to their improving economy, literacy, and public health fight against parasitic infections that are endemic in barefoot populations - will affect the future of endurance running. I was recently horrified by a youtube video of Kenyan schoolchildren "running".

Talk about winning at all costs. We don't have to get faster, we just need them to get slower. Not as tragic as smallpox blankets, but not good

Cliftons are great shoes for me. Went through a pair B2s and a pair Rapa Nui's. 375 and 400 miles respectively. Clifton's have excellent feel and are a little snugger in the forefoot which really helps me.
