I was kidding.

When I read one person saying the second hill just about killed him, I just smile. Where I live, I try to race on the hardest courses with hills I can find. Anyone can race on flat land.

I'm from Edmonton & just checked out the course map. Looks like it's an out & back on the same trail. After the "1km out, 3km back" portion, you'll move from the path to the road. I'm sure they will have some form of monitoring on the 1km out & back section.

I'm from Edmonton too and have run the trails on the map. The reason why I believe they are separate trails is because there would not be enough room to have runners going out and back on the same trail. Its not single track, but trying to run 3 people wide will be pushing it. In the guide it says the 3km back section is along the trail, so we have ~8km on trail, ~2km on the hawerlak road for us Oly folks.

The trail is hard packed dirt on the 3km section, I won't tell you about the nasty short steep hill we run up to keep my local advantage. I'm running the course later this week, I'll correct myself if I'm wrong.

I was out riding on those trails last night. I think you are right - out on one, back on the other. To whomever was worried about cutting the course, they are separated by a lot of trees/brush. You'd have to really want it to cut the course (and the scrapes would give you away).

I ran the course this morning. The turn around from the trail closest to the golf course to the return trail closer to the river was spray painted on the ground. Its well before you reach Groat road bridge. Also the on the way back on the 3km trail, we switch from the trail closest to the river back to the horse trail that we ran on last year. Fun part of the trail closest to the river (ie. little rolling hills) is not a part of the course because its too full of roots.

This will all make sense when you get there :-)

It's in the "Race Package Checklist" for each event in the Athlete Guide (pg. 47 for Oly distance).
