been using a bike trainer a lot this season so far, and was just wondering if anyone knew for sure f there really are any negative effects on the bike or rear wheel from the trainer.

Not on the bike or rear wheel, but I've noticed my trainer eats through tires! There are a few special 'trainer' tires out there made specifically for bike trainers, which would be a wise investment.

I have a kevlar tire on my rear wheel when I ride on trainer (Specialized Armadillo is an example). Much tougher than a regular tire.
