still closed, I did the ride on Sunday and the interstate isn't all that bad. I actually enjoy it, nice draft. It is a 7 mile stretch on the interstate each way. Going north, you have 5 miles, then the rest station, then another ~2 miles to the exit.

Wait a minute....Are we talking about actually riding ON I5 here? I'm a Marine and have been out there though not recently. I can't imagine riding on any interstate, let alone I5. The only one I can imagine would be worse would be I95 out here on the right coast.

yes we are talking about Interstate 5, from the Oceanside Harbor exit to the Las Pulgas exit. It's not bad at all. The shoulder is about 10 yards wide the whole way and is kept somewhat clean and is good asphalt. I feel a lot safer riding there then on some of the places on base. Vandegrift, past Stuart Mesa comes to mind, 3 foot wide bike lane and people speeding by at Interstate speeds!

Is it LEGAL or are we playing chicken with the do-right boys? I'm asking q's because I expect to be stationed out there in a couple of years.

for that one stretch of 7 miles it is legal to ride. There are numerous places in San Diego where it is legal and supported to ride on the wide shoulder of the Interstate. Now if I were in the USMC or Reserves and had access to the Base, I would rather opt for riding on Base for that stretch along Stuart Mesa Blvd.

Mike -- can you get to the rest of the 1/2 course by doing that? I want to ride miles 25-50 at some point before the race.

Julian,

the only part of the course that civilians are allowed to ride are the first half mile to the Del Mar gate, and then the part along the Old Coast Highway between the Las Pulgas gate and Cristianitos Road, about ten miles. The rest is closed. I am sure that in the Spring we will try to do some group rides on the course. This of course depends on having some of the Camp Pendleton Tri Team go with us, and right now, just about all of them are or are about to be shipped out. I'll let you know if and when we plan a ride so you can tag along also.

I could post something here when I know of a ride going on Base. Probably won't happen for a while though, the Pendleton group rides right now have dwindled down to just a few non military people and they have not been going on Base as of late.

My guess is that the Camp P tri-team will be no shows for most of this year due to worldwide events. Not many will be doing much more than packing around through sand on the other side of the world for a while. I've got several friends out there and they say its becoming a ghost town. Hmmmm, reminds me of 1990....
