another etap upgrade scenario, what would I need (2x 11s to 1x 12sp on tri bike)
Current bike is 2011 cannondale slice with shimano 11s R7000 mechanical shifting. If I was to go to 12sp etap in a 1x setup, is this the complete list of what i'd need?

RD
Blip Box
clics (+ optional basebar blips)
Freehub swap for my Hed Jet Plus 6 wheels (https://store.hedcycling.com/hed-wheel-hub-bodies/)
12sp cassette + chain
Wolftooth chainring (https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/...?variant=27923279429)
battery + charger

half my brain says i'm forgetting something, and the other half says this is everything and this would be super easy. Instead of spending $4k+ used or $6k+ new for an etap equipped bike, re-dialing my fit etc.,, in looking around I feel like I could compile all these parts for like $1200 and could install all parts myself.

I am not an expert.
I just upgraded my 2011 Felt to SRAM 11 speed ETap. I was told I could not go to 12 speed as the frame spacing wasn't compatible. The 12 speed is made for 142mm frame spacing of disc brakes/thru axles, where my Felt with rim brakes has a 130 mm frame spacing.

I just upgraded my 2011 Felt B14 TT bike (10 speed) with SRAM etap (12-speed) & 12-speed Shimano cassette. It works great!

Of course, now I’ve gone off the deep end and also replaced my aerobars, handle, & stem. It wasn’t necessary for the etap. I just wanted to do it. I think my frame is the only original part on that bike now - but I love that frame! :)

Edit - apologies, I replied to the wrong post. Intended for OP.

I just received all the parts to do my upgrade and that is exactly the list I had. I also needed shorter chainring bolts than my orginal. I installed a single chainring on a P2Max + SRAM Force 22

Absent more information this is somewhere between flat out wrong, and a really bad miscommunication.

Right, honestly what inspired this idea was a bike on the classifieds for sale, a rim brake Fuji d6 with red etap 1x setup. so, running the axs on a rim brake tri bike is not an issue as that previous poster alleged?

You could make things at the bars easier by going with the wireless blips. No blipbox to find a spot for and no wires. The only downside is you need a SRAM shifter or Blipbox to configure the wireless blips one time. Maybe a friend or shop could provide?

There are definitely certain arrangements of eTap parts that likely won't work well on a bike with 130 spacing, and some rim brake hubs won't be compatible with the SRAM cassette format, but beyond that? It's bunk. Force and Red are both available in a (road) rim brake format, which essentially mandates a 130 rear hub spacing.

Yeah, that's one for sure.
Are they still repairing/replacing torque tubes on those? Pretty much all the ones I have seen in the recent past are at or past end of life on that part...

Shimano 12sp cassette will work fine on that 11sp hub.

If you leave your freehub as is and use a Shimano type cassette as others are suggesting you will be required to run a Shimano (or variant) 12 speed chain and chainring. Sram chain rollers are 0.5mm bigger in diameter so you can't mix chains, chainrings, and cassettes. The only anomaly will be your derailleur pulley wheels that will be the bigger diameter have no load on them and are essentially guides that I have found no issue on my tri or road bike. You could buy aftermarket pulley wheels if that is a concern for you.

I very naively thought the 12 speed SRAM cassette would work on the Shimano hub. So I bought the cassette, bought the chain and then realized the incompatibility. I found one wheel I could upgrade to XDR.

Live and learn !

When the post about the 142mm frame came in, I went 'oh crap'. Glad it was debunked.

In hindsight, if to do it again, I would not have gone SRAM due to experience with another derailleur that is in firmware upgrade hell.

Nope, there's actually a rim brake AXS version for road bikes. The only difference would be that it would have shifters instead of blip box.

And I am running that setup.

It seems I was given some bogus information. Hmmm

Under $1200 honestly...

RD - I'd get a Force, good balance weight wise and uses the hydraulic clutch vs. spring on the Rival - ~$300
I'd go wireless blip - no wires ~$200
Just get a Shimano 12 speed cassette - will fit on your current wheel - $100
I like YBN Chains, Shimano 12 speeds are good too - $60
Chainring... my 'old' 1x chainring worked with my 1x 11sp chainring, internal size is same 11 & 12 speed
Yes battery and charger - $50

Now the controller, blip box that I skipped over... you only need it to pair the wireless blips. Cheapest option if you're buying something would be to buy an Eagle AXS shifter ($150'sh) since you're going 1x and super cheap would be to borrow an AXS shifter/blip box to pair the wireless blips.

But yes, I think you could easily do this for way under $1200.

I very naively thought the 12 speed SRAM cassette would work on the Shimano hub. So I bought the cassette, bought the chain and then realized the incompatibility. I found one wheel I could upgrade to XDR.
Or just use a HG cassette hub... aka the Shimano hub standard that your wheel already has. Shimano cassettes work fine with AXS 12 speed road systems.

Shimano 11 or 12 (or both) speed cassette works with AXS12 ?

Yes but only with the appropriate rear derailleur of course.

SRAM AXS shifters/Blip box with a firmware update will work with the old eTap 11s speed derailleurs. The derailleurs will shift but NOT show up in the app and other stuff that AXS components bring to the party. Both SRAM and Shimano casssettes for 11 speed use the HG Standard.

Now for 12 speed, yes a Shimano HG compatible cassette will work with a SRAM AXS front/rear derailleur. SRAM 12 speed cassettes went to a new proprietary designs... as you know.

You'd use a Shimano chain, chainrings, and casette, then the AXS derailleur/shifters. Pully wheels also have a different spacing so personally I'd replace those as well, although it probably doesn't matter

Could you just buy a gx shifter and strap that to the bars instead to save even more expense?

mtb diameter is 22.2mm also, same as extensions?

Although I don't know how ergonomic the shifting would be using this set up. But possible right?

They could as I mentioned in my response above... after being paired with the wireless blips you wouldn't even need the controller until you needed to pair more wireless blips. Theoretically when the battery dies in a few years.

It's a bit of a hack for 1x riders to use the AXS eagle shiter/controller to pair up the wireless blips.

Really??? I had no idea but it seems to be right according to http://obike.dk/teknisk_info. The 12 speed cassette is 40.9 mm thick and the 11 speed is 40.5 - I guess that the lockring would just be a bit harder to get on...

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment
