Changing tents at What is now called Olympic Distance Triathlon.

Having to get on the scales for a weight loss check after the bike, as part of a mandatory 2 min rest period before being allowed to run (August 1980, Madison, Wisconsin, quasi-olympic distance triathlon).

Those are third generation Scott clip-ons. The first gen was just a u-shaped loop, no pads. I bought them, and within a month was fashioning my own pads out of 4" PVC pipe (cut in quarters) and the blue poly foam pad from REI. Pop-riveted some steel lumber strap to the bottom, held onto the bar with a pipe clamp... Voila.

How about this one; Who crawled across the finish at Kona and asked ABC Wide World of Sports "Did I finish"?

Jan Wanklyn (may have butchered the spelling on that one). She spent the last half mile doubled over, and then going on all-fours for a while because she just couldn't hold her body up, then finally just dragging herself over the line. If I remember right, she also asked "Is that it, am I done?"

There was also a girl on a cover of Triathlete (or Triathlon) magazine and I bought the magazine (I usually just browsed through them in the store) just so I could keep her picture. For the life of me I can't remember her name.

Fernanda Keller?

That's a good guess but it wasn't her. I do remember a cover of Fernanda Keller though.

I'm trying to think of her but she is American and not a big name.

Another good one but not her.

I only remember seeing this girl once, on a cover. She did triathlons so wasn't just a model but the name escapes me. I believe it would have been around the late 1980's or early 1990's.

No, that isn't her.

I almost don't want to remember because then I'd likely find out she is married and that despite only seeing her on a triathlon magazine about 28 years ago, and not even knowing her name now, my dreams will be shattered...

Eney Jones, think she made two covers. She was primarily a swimmer who dabbled for a bit in triathlon in the early days, and now crushes dreams in masters swim meets and OW racing. She is still fit and I believe single...(-;

Jan Ripple? From Baton Rouge. Was really strong over the Olympic and half IM distance. She would be one of the first out of the swim and off the bike but always struggled with the marathon.

My wife helping me put my cotton socks after the swim, no stinking rules about helping out your husband in a transition area.

Laying your bike down on the ground, no stinking numbered bikes racks.

Having a friend tell me 1 mile into the run to take my bike helmet off.

I photographed Pip Taylor for the Triathlete cover so could show you that. She's not an american as I recall, but was a delight to work with.

That looks like a J-Disc. I had one just like it, in pink. They were great until anything came in contact with them, at which point they would dimple or tear. If you think you have to be careful with "carbon fairing" wheels, you don't know nothing til you've tried to keep a J-Disc safe from harm.

Yup; J-Disc was very cool. Another company made a plastic shrink material that some of us poor guys used! Also had a very cool Jetstream hydration device to spray competitors too....

It's none of those.

I'll have to think about her name. You'd think that given how much time I spent looking at her picture, I'd remember her name :)

Any dimples or wrinkles came out pretty quickly with a few blasts from a hair dryer. And they were pretty easy to repair with MonoKote. I broke a spoke once on mine, I just sliced the cover open, replaced the spoke, and patched it back up. Part of the reason I chose white instead of any of the other colors was that was easier to match at the hobby shop...
