Wrist Strap for Garmin Edge 500
I'm looking for a wrist strap for the Garmin Edge 500 to use in duathlons. I've seen some posts about a mount for the 310XT, but was wondering what was out there. I have a Forerunner 405, but thought it was easiest with the 500 as I want to sync to my Powertap on the bike leg. Thanks for the help!

I've never seen one for the 500.

Why not race with both? I race with both a 310 and a 500. I love the display options on my 500 so I use it on the bike. I use the 310 for my entire race. It keeps my overall time. Sure I get duplicate bike data but it's never been an issue for me.

A guy at my LBS talked about doing this. He liked it, though I think it lacks the option to display pace, only speed. I'll see if I can find out what he used for a strap.

The quick-release kit for the 310XT uses the same quarter-turn mount as the Edge 500, so it should give you the wrist strap you're looking. The 910XT QR kit might work too, but the base plate for the mount is a little sculpted and I suspect that it won't work as well.

Like the previous poster said, the Quick-release kit for the 310XT will work:

Be sure to get the one which includes the watch band (link above). $18.

If it uses the same quarter turn mount the 910 or 310 QR bands will work, just be ware that the quarter turn will mount it sideways, at least that's the way the 800 is set up...have to adjust the bar mounts every time I switch between the 2 devices.

I have the 310xt release mount for my edge 500, it works well and it comes with some extra release kit so if you have a different bracelet that you want to use, you can install it which is pretty neat.

Everything works well and it's easy to take on and off. it's actually holding the gps stronger than the bike mounts that came with my edge. There's a lot of holes so it will fits on really small and really large wrists without much problems. ( I have pretty small wrists and I have 5-6 holes left) The build quality seems nice too.

Only downside with the edge 500, No pace only speed, the screen is sideways, and you can't use a footpod if you ever want to use it on a threadmill or inside. Other than that, it's working really well.

I think there's a picture of the combo on DCrainmaker's blog.

I've been holding my 500 in my hand during trainer-treadmill bricks just to see my heart rate during my run. I'm gonna get me one of those wrist straps.

For reference only - here is the strap part of the 310xt set up

http://www.trademe.co.nz/...ng.aspx?id=462896268

Trade Me is the equivalent of eBay in New Zealand. The reason it is/was for sale is/was because I had the watch ripped off my wrist in the middle of a sprint tri.

The Quick Release Kit Part Number 010-11215 requires the re-use of the straps that came with the watch (Garmin provide a tool to extract the pins)

What is not made apparent is that Quarter turn Bike mounts - part number 010-11430-00 are compatible with the 310xt (and vise versa) but I seem to
remember that when I tried the Edge 500 on my strap, it was turned through 90 degrees.

I have since moved onto the 910xt again with the quick release strap but in this instance, the Kit comes with additional straps - you re-use the pins

The difference between mounting plate is that the 310xt mount is flat where-as the 910xt is curved, and although I cannot test it (because the 310 is at the bottom of a lake) a 310xt should fit on a 910xt strap, but the 910xt definitely does not fit on a 310xt mount.

What this actually means (now that I think about it) is that the release kit for the 910xt is probably better because you get the straps included and they are black

Couldn't you take something like the quick-release velcro wrist band for the 305, superglue on a Garmin 500 mount to it, and be done with it? Then you would have it angled the correct way.

Hi Allen,
I'm also a duathlete and just got a Garmin Edge 500. Wondering why you would want to use the 500 during the run? Are you able to change activity type to run in the 500? My 500 currently only has cycling but I would love to find a way to also use it for running. Or do you just run with it in the cycling mode and interpret your stats in the cycling data fields?
Essentially I would love if I could find the running.fit file and if that would work in the 500.

The 500 is a cycling only unit. The reason for wanting to use it for running is to not have to fork over more $$ and use a perfectly good GPS for something more than cycling.

I also tried to run with my 500 but just put it in my pocket. Personally didn't like to carry it around and my girlfriend (then, now wife) bought me a 310xt during an REI sale.

I'd say find a nice used running watch on the classifieds or eBay. There are a few 310 and 910 going for sub 100.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll try running with the 500 in cycling mode and then when importing to strava I'll tell Strava that it is a run and not a ride. We'll see how that works. During the run I can use the stats for cycling like mph and mile splits.

And I know it is a cycling only unit but I'm wondering if there is a way to hack it to also work with running. To me it looks as simple as uploading the file "running.fit" but I don't know anything about computing. Would be cool if it worked.

I just determine the different legs of a race in Training Peaks using GPS. No need to worry about hitting the lap button, etc. Just look at it later. It also helps that I'm not getting any power data during the running legs, so I know exactly when I'm on the bike.

I used my 520 briefly for running after losing my 920. I put it on the 920 QR watch strap.

Aside from it being awkward to have the display sideways, pacing off it was abysmal. 6.0 mph, 7.5 mph, and 5.0 mph are about the only paces I know off the top of my head but weren't the ones I was targeting for that run, plus the instantaneous speed it read out was confusing as hell.

Kids, don't try this at home!... but I also thought I'd be crafty and use it in the pool to time laps. (And all the fish collectively cringe...). Yep, jumped in, took 2 strokes, then realized WTF am I doing?? It's not water proof. I got it out of the water as quick as I could and am happy to say it doesn't look like I ruined it.

Went out and bought a 235 after that (on sale at REI at the time). Used "other" mode to record swimming outside and got an hr file out of it. Waaay more comfortable than the 520 or 920 on the wrist. But yes, it felt overall aweful to dump more money into another GPS device when fundamentally, the one I already had could technically work.

Yes, I see what you're saying about the 500 series being sub-optimal for running but I'm really not buying a GPS watch right now. I put the data field on speed per lap so it will show me my speed over the last mile instead of the twitchy instantaneous speed. Haven't tried it yet but we'll see how it goes.
I use strava so I just did a test over a minute run. I uploaded the activity as a cycle ride of course and then told strava to convert it to a run and it worked perfectly. I'll do a more in depth test later.
Obviously these are less than perfect scenarios but this will have to do for now keeping finances in mind.
