World Human Powered Speed Champs

Going on now: http://www.wisil.recumbents.com/...edchallenge-2008.htm

72 year old guy hitting 57.25MPH.

Interesting to see that once you stop worrying about things like handling and UCI rules, you can do a lot. Recumbents are usually a joke, but these things make the P3C look like a brick. Most of the riders don't look particularly impressive. Wonder what a Boonen or Hushovd type could do out there.

....

You know, I wonder what would happen if I showed up in transition with one of those for an IM.

i love that stuff.

id also like to see a course with some hills, curbs that have to be bunnyhopped and such.

see what a no rules bike that still allows for descending, turning, and minor hopping could be like.....

A team mate of mine hit 66+ mph in a tricycle. The first run the brakes didnt work at 55mph it took 2 miles to coast down to a speed where they could stop it.

this one is great:

In 2007, Damjan Zabovnik broke the European speed record by going 74.96 MPH facing backwards!

This is a lame competition between a bunch of engineers who have chosen this as their weekend hobby. I saw a youtube video a year back about the guy who broke the top speed record, and he talked about how he only eats red licorice before every run because it contains the perfect sugars for top human performance.

Red vines, fuel of champions.

So cool engineering is lame now?

what?
No, cool engineering is always cool, but athletic competitions between engineers instead of athletes loses a lot of the luster IMO.

Depending on what one considers human powered,
John Howard definitely has it, if only for the cojones factor.
