I did it with a Zipp 440 front and a Renn disc a few years ago. It's a course that you should be kicking yourself if you own a disc and do not ride it.

404's (gasp, clincher!) - Gunning for a 2:45 (hoping to not smoke my legs for the run)

I hear that adding tires and a hubs makes the Nimble Crosswind A LOT faster. Just a thought.

Tires and tubes are nice.

But a hub will be key.

On a serious note, don't run anything over 20mm wide on that rim. Completely destroys the aerodynamics of the wheel.

The 606's sound like a good pick. If you ask me I'd advise anyone who's racing not to take a disc for example. The course isn't an easy one and you'll be out of the saddle quite often with turns and uphills. Acceleration will be a factor. Also, deeper wheels tend to be heavier and that may slow you down on the hills.

Hmmm. That's sounds nice.

But

I'm still going with 909 Tubular.

Probably leave the disc at home and run straight 606's. Might change that at the last minute, but right now I'm planning on going light over aero.

not sure if it's ideal, but i'll be riding jet 90 clincher front and a powertap sl-dt 1.1/wheelcover rear (first time racing with power).

i rode 2:47 last year on a pair of old (via ebay) jet 50 tubulars front/rear -- my first tri. felt plenty fast. my tri bike's at least 2-3lbs heavier than my road bike all loaded up (aero bottle, bento box, etc) so it'll never be a great climber....

they say the faster you go, the more aero is important than weight so i'm hoping to go fast this year! =) i can't remember if the windy section at the end affected handling -- it seemed like an almost direct headwind.

You rich bastards. I'm running the Shimano R-550's that came with my bike. I did just order a 12/27 cassette and new chain though. I suck at cycling!

Last year I went with a Hed 3 in the front and a Zipp 404 with cover (racing with Power)..this combo was not that heavy and did not have any real problems with the climbing portion's on the back side..I have done this race a couple of times with power and w/out power..last year with power- and when you turn on Vandegrift heading for home you will be glad that u have your powermeter..I passed a ton of people even with the headwind..stay aero and stay within your watts and you will see people going back while are going foward..Good Luck

To my fellow competitors:
The weather has been perfect the last years, warm and sunny and no crosswinds at all. Don't overdress! :-)
A real deep front is the way to go for the "lightweights" in my AG.
For all other regular-built folks in my AG:
The bike is blazing fast and holding back a little on the first half will definitely not get you a new PB.
Choose the lightest setup possible since the roads are clean and smooth. There is no need to carry a spare since there will be excellent Tech-support on the bike.
;-)

But since you asked nicely:

Clinchers, Mich. Race2's on a 404 front and 404rear with cover.

But I am not really in contention for an AG award (just a new PB). And I am dead serious on this one.

Not to take a disc?

That's debatable. My bike fitness has been steadily improving, but based on other races from the past three seasons, I haven't made any dramatic leaps like my ride time at last year's Cali Half, compared to prior years. Only change - a disc.

2004 - 2:54
2005 - 2:56
2006 - 2.45 (disc)

2005 & 2006 had pretty much identical sucky weather, too.

The big hills are too short to consider their effect with a disc. There's so much flat and slightly rolling terrain that a disc's advantages shouldn't be ignored.
