This..... baffles me as to why they don't add earlier Ironman races. Seems like they would sell out just like all the rest. there are plenty of states in the southern half USA that could accommodate the weather that time of year

x2 I'm looking forward to IM Texas 2017 when it falls in April, but after that what else? The problem with the Southwest is that there aren't many options left that haven't already failed (IM California, IM St George, springtime IM Arizona, IM Utah). So looking at Google maps, and with zero knowledge of whether it's even feasible, how about IM Flagstaff (swim in Mormon Lake?) or IM Albuquerque/Santa Fe (swim in Jemez Canyon reservoir or Cochiti Lake). Are those doable in the spring?

Flagstaff would be awesome...

That said, I think the demand for an early season US IM isn't as great as people make it out to be. We also had St. George a few years ago and that got canned. The early season IMs never sold out like the late summer or fall IMs did.

I'm wondering if the good venues for a spring IM just don't want to have a race in their towns at that time of year. Some may benefit from keeping their hotels and roads open for normal tourists who visit while other parts of the country are still covered in snow.

Sometimes I think people don't want to race triathlon... but be part of an ego parade.

I've raced Saint George 70.3, 3x never did the full but I've race IM Lake Tahoe and IM Canada. SG 70.3 bike course 2x would as difficult maybe more then both of them. The run would be more difficult...bottom line it won't sell out.

Flagstaff would be awesome but it could be worse than Tahoe. It had 7inches of snow on May 15th. I'll bet this comparison suprises people. I know it's south lake but still....

While you could never put forward an "easy" 112 mile bike course in St. George you definitely can make the run course easier as proven by the last course they used before it was cancelled. I agree that 2X the 70.3 run course would be pure masochism but it doesn't have to be set up like that. The bike course will always be tough but between it and Sand Hollow it's what makes the race epic. I think it's a shame because the community would welcome the Full IM back with open arms. The community there loves Ironman.

Ironman fulls may be like a parade, but is it a race when you are the only one in your age group? HITS fulls are more like hard solo training efforts. Wanting to race your peers doesn't make it an ego parade, nor does that apply to first timers wanting all the hoopla. You don't get that at sparsely attended indies.
