why you wouldn't want to set up yourself and thereby know the intricacies of your set up to make changes/fixes when needed at inopportune times is beyond me. i dont want to rely on a shop to get things done, but i am riding for the long haul not a short term have shop do everything mentality. rant over :)

Having some else set it up first time, whilst you're watching can be handy. Particularly on hard to work on Tri bikes.

Ok, you represent 1/100 triathletes. At best.

i represent no triathletes :) but you knew that

i have been in situations where things before a race. knowing what needs to get done quickly helps a lot.

i also fully admit some bikes are a pita to work on, but i dont want to have to pay someone or worse, wait for someone to get around to it and waste time driving to and from.(only applies to white glove service after it has expired)

i keep increasing my tool supply and have bulk cables and housing for my remaining mech rides

I agree with you.

But you have to realize, there a lot more people that want nothing to do with fixing anything their bike, let alone putting it together.

I've had a friend ask me several times how to change the battery of his duotrap speed sensor on his speed concept. I think he's been asking me for over 6 months. I still don't think he has done it. It takes less than 5 minutes to do it. But it's obvious he's very concerned/scared to work on anything on his bike. I've told him to come over and I'll show him.... he has yet to do so.

So, in one, you will learn a thing or two. In the other, nothing.

if i had to guess, it would be the latter. cant see them patiently going slowly trying to teach someone the various aspects of assembly. they'd lose money. they might adjust seat height while you watch :)

Even if they assemble it quickly, it could still be useful. Remember, dentists are fast learners.

I agree, this is a great idea and clearly closes the gap for the direct to consumer model. I think it is a really cool idea and I hope it works!

If you decided to order a Ventum and have it delivered by Velofix you can then discuss with the van who will deliver your new bike that you would like to learn about the bike.

Every van that delivers a Ventum will know the bike inside and out and can answer all your technical questions from assembly, fitting and travel.

Is this the Velofix in question? They are a franchise chain employing bike wrenches at like $15/hr. The odds of them knowing how to wrench a tri superbike are slim to none. Maybe if it was a full suspension gravel fat bike or something....

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

The only Velofix I've run across is the one based in Kailua-Kona. The operator is the owner and is a long term mechanic that worked for years at Bikeworks. When the opportunity came along to purchase a Velofix franchise he jumped at it. I thought there would be a lot of similar Velofix operations around the country where solid bike mechanics can operate a business with a lot less overhead than comes with the rent of a brick & mortar shop. Maybe this isn't the case in your area or others around the country?

Though many of the LBS's in my area employee the type of labor you ascribe to Velofix.

Most Velofix vans are operated by the owners. I can't speak about how they work on other brands but with Ventum we educate each van operator on how to work on and maintain the Ventum bikes. From assembly to adjustments and bike fitting.

So question as a fitter who has fitted numerous elite multisport athlete, when you say Velofix is trained in fitting and wrenching on your Ventum. How are they trained as fitters? My suggestion to you as a company is to refer your clients to a qualified fitter.

My guess is that Jimmy is referring to showing the mechanic how to properly assemble/disassemble/adjust the stack/reach and such. Not actually giving them a fit clinic. You know, so the mechanic knows how to adjust the bike properly when matching fits from a different bike or something.

Gotcha so you do recommend the customers do receive a proper bike fit ? Can the buyer send their Retul/ Body Geometry Sin Numbers and Ventum setting bike up?

I'm not recommending anything nor can I answer your question, as I'm not with Ventum. I was simply trying to point out what I think Jimmy was trying to get across.

I have fit a few Ventums. Nice fit adjustments. Fit depends entirely upon the physiology of the athlete aboard the bike. As triathlon fitters we like a big range of effective seat tube angle.
