UCIs new idea...

To shorten the Vuelta (maybe down to 2 weeks) so that the Vuelta doesn't impact the Tour of Poland and Tour of Germany...

Bloody geniuses these guys... (rolling eyes)

needless to say the Vuelta organizers aren't too fond of the idea.

The UCI leadership are truly visionaries. They really understand the traditions of the sport.

Is this payback for Operacion Puerto?

More fuel for fire!

At this point, while both sides have been posturing for some time, I feel that the relationship between the UCI/Pro Tour and the organizers of the 3 grand tours has become untenable. Maybe I do not completely understand the issues but the whole debacle seems to bear a lot of resemblance to the feud that developed between CART and the IRL a number of years ago hear here in the US. Personally, I think the UCI has deviated so far from its foundations as a regulatory body that it might be best if the grand tours to completely withdraw support for particpation/inclusion in the Pro Tour to help get the UCI back in touch with reality.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Two points:

1) Traditions? You mean like how they moved the Vuelta from June to September some years ago?

2) The biggest plus is the possibility that the world championships will be moved up to before the Vuelta and we might see the best riders instead of just a few.

Exactly. As well as moving the WC's so that many of the best riders no longer want to go. Allowing race radios so that the directeurs can dictate the race through their TV feeds, rather than the riders / teams with the best tactical sense. restricting innovations in equipment. Implementing the ProTour in and of itself was another one of their bonehead moves, in that it has hurt those races that are not on it but used to attract top level teams.

This reminds me of a discussion on a hockey forum about the tighter fitting uniforms they will be wearing in the NHL. The guy against them, who started a petition, screamed about tradition and then disappeared when I showed him that tradition has been long gone. If you want total tradition then you are about 20 or 30 years too late and if you want real tradition then you are about 80 years too late.
