Tri Training in Kona
I'm heading to Kona later this week and, in addition to vacationing, will be doing some tri training. I plan to ride on the Queen K highway, but am a little concerned about it being a "highway" and the amount of shoulder space for riding. Is this a dangerous or safe place to train? Are there other places on the Kona side of the Big Island that are good for long hours in the saddle? We're staying in Waikoloa.

As for swimming, are there any safe, sheltered areas for open water swimming in that area? Alternatively, someone told me there's a public outdoor 50 meter pool in Kona, but I couldn't find anything about it on the web.

Thanks in advance.

The Queen K has a wide shoulder, plenty of room. I wouldn't go any further south than Palani, and heading north you can either climb up to Waikoloa or head up to Hawi. Hapuna Beach has a nice beach and you can swim there...it's the swim venue for Hawaii 70.3. There is a pool in town. As you head down Palani hill, turn right at the Kuakini Hwy intersection, the pool will be on the left just past the stop sign.

Here's a link to the Kona pool: http://www.swimmersguide.com/...tail.cfm?PoolID=9046

You'll be fine riding on the Queen K. As was said it has a very wide shoulder and drivers are very accustomed to having cyclists on the road. I second the advice to not ride in Kona itself. People do it, but not the greatest idea.

As far as open water swimming you can swim right at A Bay if you are staying at Waikoloa Beach or drive down to Hapuna. There are a lot of swimmers down at the pier in Kona in the morning so you would have lots of company if that makes you feel more comfortable.

I highly recommend riding or running on the Kohala Mountain Road (Rt. 250) between Hawi and Waimea if you haven't done so in the past. Tremendous views. It isn't the safest place to ride however as it is winding and has no shoulder and it is usually very windy up there. That's why I usually run up there, under the Ironwood trees. I agree with the others that the Queen K is safe for cycling north of Kona. The ride up from Kawaihae to Hawi on Rt. 270 is also pretty safe, with a nice shoulder and little traffic. Hapuna Beach is a beautiful place to swim. Enjoy!!!
