Training volume to maintain FTP.

I'm currently in a pretty unorganized training regimen....do what I can, when I can. I've got a few races left and should be done in 3 weeks for the year. Over the off season, I have a few goals.

I really want to build up my FTP before the spring. I plan to dedicate several months to a cycling focus. I'm currently estimating my FTP to be ~230 (haven't done a test in several weeks). Hoping to get it up to 275+ for next year and eventually break 300. I know if I seriously cut back on swimming and running, I can make some great increases (currently only riding 3 x's a week). What I'm worried about is that when I start cutting back on the bike to add the running and swimming back in, how much of a hit is that going to put on my bike fitness.

I also want to spend a month or so really improving my swim stroke. Take a few lessons and possibly join a masters group. I've got a lot of low hanging fruit there. But I don't want to spend a lot of time on the bike, then cut back to 2 rides a week while focusing on the pool and lose everything I worked on.

So if I spend 3 months really pushing the bike training while riding 5+ days a week, can I maintain that fitness with 2 possibly 3 rides per week max when I focus on swimming/running again?

I was able to 'maintain' about 95-96% of my FTP over the past few winters by just doing one hard trainer ride per week. All of my intervals were at or above FTP - some in the 5-10 min range and others at only 30". Hardest, but maybe the best workout, was a 40 min mainset of 40x (30" @ 120% with 30" of recovery). Those recoveries seem awful short!

It can definitely be done with minimal biking, but those bike sessions need to be so hard that you kind of don't want to do them!
